First Folio - Wauconda Area Library
January | February | March 2016 First Folio THE BOOK THAT GAVE US Macbeth, Julius Caesar, Twelfth Night, Antony and Cleopatra. These famous plays and 14 others by William Shakespeare would very likely have been lost to us without the First Folio. Published in 1623, the First Folio is the first collected edition of Shakespeare’s plays, many of which were not published during his lifetime. Only 233 copies are now known to exist. In 2016, to mark the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare’s death, the Folger Shakespeare Library in Washington, D.C., is sending a First Folio exhibition to only one institution in each state in the United States. The Lake County Discovery Museum in Wauconda has been selected as the only institution in Illinois that will host First Folio! The Book That Gave Us Shakespeare, a national traveling exhibition of an original edition of the First Folio of Shakespeare, one of the world’s most treasured books. The Folger Shakespeare Library, in partnership with Cincinnati Museum Center and the American Library Association, is sponsoring this exhibition of an original edition of the First Folio in 2016 in all 50 states, Washington, D.C., and Puerto Rico. The Lake County Discovery Museum will host the First Folio! exhibition February 3-29, 2016. The Wauconda Area Library is proud to have played a role in supporting the museum’s efforts to be selected as the Illinois venue for the First Folio! exhibition. We are leading an initiative titled #DiscoverWill: Illinois Libraries Celebrate the First Folio, encouraging public libraries across the state to host reading programs or special events that celebrate Shakespeare’s timeless works which continue to move and inspire us today. “The museum’s First Folio! exhibition will provide a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for Wauconda Area residents – as well as all visitors to the area – to see firsthand the most important book in the history of English literature and to feel the inspirational power of this book,” said Tom Kern, Library Director. “We are particularly excited about the Lake County Discovery Museum’s exhibit because it will so eloquently convey the importance of the printed word in this ever-growing world of e-this and e-that.” The Shakespeare First Folio is one of the most valuable printed books in the world; a First Folio sold for $6.2 million in 2001 at Christie’s and another one for $5.2 million in 2006 in London. When the First Folio arrives in Wauconda, its pages will be opened to the most quoted line from Shakespeare and one of the most quoted lines in the world, “To be, or not to be” from Hamlet. For more information about Wauconda Area Library programs celebrating Shakespeare and First Folio!, please turn to Page 2 of this newsletter, call the library at 847-526-6225, or visit our website at www.wauclib.org.
