DECEMBER 2012
Dear Friends,
Happy New Year
2013 is here. What will it bring?
Opportunity. Every day of the coming
year will be filled with opportunity and
possibilities. Every day will give you a
chance to make your life count, to make
a difference, to grow, to learn, to achieve,
to be the person you were meant to be.
Today you stand at the threshold of a new
year. A blank slate ready to be filled by
you. The new year makes no promises,
and has no guarantees other than this - every day will be filled
with challenges and opportunities. It is up to you to recognize
the opportunities, to see the possibilities, and to overcome the
challenges. And by so doing, your life, and the world around
you, will be enriched.
The furor arising out of the recent gang rape in Delhi has
brought the issue of crime against women to the forefront. The
single most important factor in the elimination of this kind of
heinous crime is a time bound process of justice where the
accused are convicted . In urban cities women feel no longer
safe! What about the women in the villages in rural areas? Who
will fight for them? Let us create more awareness and do our bit.
Amidst all that is happening around us, in the social, political,
economic and global environment, let us hope the new Year
brings joy, happiness, prosperity.
You don’t have to wish for a Happy New Year. You have the
power to make it a truly happy year, a year of fulfillment and
accomplishment for you. A year that will lead to many other
great years.
It doesn’t seem that long ago that we ushered in 2012, and
2014 is already looming on the horizon. Time is precious, and
we cannot save it up. We must use it as it comes.
Climb aboard 2013 and hold on. Keep your eyes open - there’s
opportunity around every bend. Have fun. It’s going to be a
great ride!
With warm regards

DEC “RELATIONSHIPS: DISCORD TO ACCORD”
Love tainted with selfishness is
'attachment'. When we are attached
to people we expect a return for our
affection. We make demands on
people. The relationship becomes
conflict-ridden. In the end, it breaks
down and we may lose the person.
It is necessary to expand our mind.
Get attached to a wider circle of
people. As we get attached to the
higher we get detached from the lower. True love is born and our
relationships become free from strife".
Traditionally, forty to forty five members in a family used to live in
harmony. There existed community spirit where each member of
the society was looked after by the other members. There was
national consciousness and pride.
Today, nuclear family is the norm in India… In abroad … single
parent.
Today, there is conflict and war between the members of the
same family on issues primarily relating to property.
When we are all living in one universe, then why the discord ?
We have all become too selfish. We think only about ourselves…
“I”, “me”, “myself” and “mine”. Spouse and children are
extensions of our self.
Each and every one of us is to be blamed. We should look within
ourselves and accept the reality that “yes, I am the reason”.
To build good relationships we should accept responsibility and
be accountable. There should also be a willingness and
determination in ourselves to change.
We should reach out to people and accept the fact that there we
are not the centre of the universe and that there are others too.
We should try and accommodate the interests of others. We
should try and see what the others see and listen to their point of
view.
Accepting the truth will help prevent break ups. We should make
a correct assessment of ourselves and others and this will help
solve problems. When we make a wrong assessment then there
is a problem.

To build healthy relationships with the people whom we love we should learn to make adjustments and live with it.
Attachment is love plus selfishness. It comes from a lack of self sufficiency and begins with constant thinking. Therefore,
we are dependent on others and have expectations from others… What do we get in return? … How are we benefiting?
Love bereft of expectations and demands builds wonderful relationships. We should try and make other people happy. For
a change we should stop thinking only about ourselves and think about others. We should maintain our own freedom and
give the other person hundred percent freedom too. This is called detachment which takes a lot of courage and strength.
We are all born with a talent and a purpose and we should invest all our thoughts and energy in contributing something to
the world. Earning lots of money does not mean a person is successful. In fact money breaks down relationships. We
should think beyond the physical and material things which gives us happiness. We are not thinking creatively because
we are too obsessed with ourselves.
“Give” you “Gain”
“Grab” you “Lose”
When we learn to give to others without expecting anything in return we become better
human beings.
We are born mortal but we are also born to be free. When there is freedom from bondage
of a relationship, we can have a wonderful life.
We should change our attitude, take the responsibility and commit ourselves to make others happy.

DR DILIP NADKARNI
“CALM SUTRA THE ART OF RELAXATION”
With Calm Sutra, he gave the formula for a healthy, happy and stress-free living.
For him "Calm Sutra" is playing golf regularly on Wednesdays and Sundays, writing creative
books and music between surgeries. He believes in living the word "Calm Sutra". He wrote his
book "Calm Sutra - The Art of Relaxation" consisting of 150 pages in seven days flat when he
was alone in Goa !!
Today the major working population is complaining of backaches, neck pain and knee pain. It
may be due to unwanted stress, worry and anger. Not all patients require surgery. Stress is the
body's normal response to anything that disturbs its natural physical, emotional, or mental
balance. Essentially stress is a response to an event or a series of events which have an
adverse effect on the human mind and body. The stress response can affect a person
physically, emotionally or psychologically and create havoc with the functioning of almost every part of the body.
What we really need to do often is "chill out" and relax. To relax means, to become less tense, or less tight. It is an action to
release, to let go. Progressive Muscle Relaxation is a process, which reduces muscle tension and eases mental stress. A
relaxed person is one whose resting heart is low, breathing is slow and deep, there is very little tension in the muscles, and the
posture is balanced, calm expression on the face and whose speech is not agitated.
"Calm Sutra - the Art of Relaxation" can be achieved in our day to day lives by throwing away
our worries, living in the moment and rejuvenating ourselves by doing a simple exercise
called vertical (stand up) yoga. He made the members perform the "titanic" pose where the
hands are outstretched on the side - the core muscles get augmented - deep breath - exhale
- calm down. The other poses included "stretch" pose, "warrior" pose, "backward arch"
pose, "standing cobra" pose amongst many others. The second way to relax is finding
humour in day to day situations. Cartoons are nothing but funny representations of
reality. The third way to achieve calmness is to take deep breaths which are long and
effortless while at the same time maintaining good posture. Deep abdominal breathing is a
major stress buster. The fourth way is through humming and singing. He demonstrated my
humming the "tanpura" raag.
Physical Exercises the fifth way are great stress busters. Stretching exercises, weight training and aerobic exercises like
walking, cycling, running and swimming can transform our lives. Regular exercise allows the body to maintain good
metabolism or homeostasis and reduce the physical impact of stress.

PROGRAMS
Stress management deals with having the right proactive attitude and building a strong infrastructure within us, which would
help us buffer stress. With the right proactive attitude we can try to identify and eradicate stressors. Plan things in advance,
manage time better, set realistic goals and avoid situations, which could bring about stress. Many times it is not possible to
eliminate stressors or unfavorable situations in life. With defense building strategies we can lessen the impact of stress and
enjoy life to the fullest. Most of these techniques keep us rooted to the present or in the moment and do not allow our minds to
go into an irrational chatter.
Meditation the sixth way is a practice of conscious or mindful focus upon a sound, an object, the breath, body movement or
thought, in order to increase awareness of the present moment, reduce stress, promote relaxation, and enhance personal and
spiritual growth.
Golf is intimately connected to Calm Sutra. Golf played with awareness transports us to Nirvana. When we swing the club
smoothly and hit the ball with the sweet spot of our club-head, a unique sensation is experienced. This sensation is multiplied
as we see the ball in flight and go the distance. Nothing else exists. We are in the moment and that unique sensation is in us.
Thus by taking a Calm Pause, by finding Humor in a situation, by making positive Affirmations, by focusing on Things I can
change, by making the Best out of Adversity, by accepting and improving on the Worst Case Scenario, by deep breathing and
through physical exercise one can achieve the Art of Relaxation.
Dr. Dilip Nadkarni is an orthopedic surgeon specializing in treating sports and fitness-related injuries. He is a distinction holder
in MBBS and a gold medalist in post-graduation in orthopedic surgery from Mumbai, India. His patients include top
international sports persons and celebrities engaged in fitness activity. Dr. Nadkarni is attached to Lilavati Hospital in Mumbai,
where he performs advanced arthroscopic surgery. He has written a book titled Knee Problem... No Problem, which deals with
avoiding and coping with knee disorders. He also edits a website called www.kneecure.com. Dr. Nadkarni's another book titled
REAL Fitness gives a simple formula to fitness, which includes relaxation, exercise, attitude and laughter. He launched the "Fit
India Movement" to promote fitness and give lectures on TV, radio, sports clubs, Rotary clubs, Lions clubs, social
organizations and corporate bodies. He has scripted and produced an instructional fitness video "Fitness Forever". After
conducting several workshops on stress management involving meditation, music, visualization and golf, in India and abroad,
Dr. Nadkarni has written Calm Sutra.

22ND PARTICIPATED IN THE
DEC FIRST DISTRICT SEMINAR ON STRATEGIC PLANNING & FUTURE VISION
“Sustainable Growth” is a dream of every organization and Rotary is no
exception. For last few years, Rotary is systematically planning to come
out of it's 'one year focus' shell and emphasize on 'Strategic Planning'.
Rotary's Strategic Planning is all about long-term vision; planned action
going beyond limits of 'one year'; continuity in leadership & service
priorities and self check on various internal processes.
Though not born at the same time, 'Rotary International' and 'The Rotary
Foundation' are like monozygous twins and therefore their approach to
growth is to some extent, similar. Hence what 'Future Vision' is to 'TRF',
'Strategic Planning' is to R.I. 'Strategic Planning' is perhaps the most sophisticated & well developed
tool Rotary has given to individual Districts & Clubs and using it skillfully, will definitely result in 'Vibrant
Clubs' and 'Vibrant Districts'.
Let us plan strategically!
With this in view our Club participated in the First District
Seminar on Strategic Planning and Future Vision on Saturday,
22nd December at IMC. DG Rtn Dr Balkrishna Inamdar was the
Chief Guest and the Faculty included PDG Rtn Dr Ulhas
