Kohinoor Ma Ta Sanman 2015 Awards
Kohinoor Honours Shashikant Dhotre With Maharashtracha
Kohinoor 2015 Award
K
ohinoor was the Title Sponsor for the annual Ma Ta
Sanman Awards for the third consecutive year. The
award function was held in style on Saturday on 14
March at The Lalit in Mumbai. Many iconic Marathi
actors from TV, Cinema and Theatre made it a point to
attend the mega event.
Every year, Kohinoor honours a promising youth from
Maharashtra who has come up on his/her own steam
and merit and become a distinguished son/daughter of
Maharashtra, by conferring the title of Maharashtracha
Kohinoor on him/her.
The honour of Maharashtracha Kohinoor 2015 was
won by a unique sketch artist Shashikant Dhotre with
magic in his fingers. His lifelike sketches have to be
seen to be believed. Son of a labourer in Solapur who
literally cracked stones with a hammer, the innumerable
struggles Shashikant had to go through did not deter
him from pursuing his passion of making sketches.
After a long spell of untold difficulties, fortune finally
smiled on him and his talent was recognized by an art
society. After that, there was no looking back. Today, he
is holding exhibitions in India in more than 20 cities and
in 2020, he will be taking his sketches reflecting the
typical culture and beauty of India to the European
continent.
A few glimpses of this year’s Maharashtracha
Kohinoor and Kohinoor Ma Ta Sanman -
Kohinoor Group was felicitated as one of
India’s Best Realty Brands 2015 at The

spectators had to keep dodging the drops of rain
seeping through the makeshift sun shelter.
After the final, there was some time for an exhibition
match between all the Department Heads and SEDIL.
But by this time the rain had started to come down
heavily and hence this match could not be completed.
Following this match, the prize distribution

New Initiative at KTI on Employee Engagement Program
‘B
e Prepared’ as the Scout Motto says – As a
business whose primary asset is the talent and
expertise of the people, Kohinoor Technical Institute
(KTI) is committed to programs that equip our
employees better to meet the challenges of a shifting
business and technology landscape and deliver on
our tough but exciting goal of reaching `500 crores
by the year 2020 to serve customers, grow our
business and lead fulfilling careers.
As KTI’s CEO, Sameer Joshi extensively elaborated
in his first employee address earlier this year on
having an open and transparent communication. To
take this thought further, he unveiled a brand new
concept through the ‘Employee Connect’ Forum
on 10 March titled ‘Coffee with CEO’.
‘Coffee with CEO’ is a new employee engagement
initiative started by the CEO of KTI to promote one
on one interaction with the staff across the KTI
organization. It is also a management tool to
acknowledge and appreciate employee achievement
and meritocracy.
Selection of the staff for this initiative is done in one
of the following ways:
a) Exceptional Performance by an employee in
the prior month (Actual Performance exceeding
Targets or a Special Contribution or an Innovative
Idea).
b) The CEO shall pick one employee through a
‘Special Draw’ as and when he travels to the
branches.
The Star of the Opening Session on 10 March was a
hard-core Kohinoor loyalist and a lady with experience
of 32 years, our very own Area Manager of Kurla and
Boisar Branch Prema Sakpal who joined Kohinoor
as a faculty member for the Telephone Operator
course and climbed up the corporate ladder to
become Area Manager.
Her selection was made because she went far
beyond her original given target fee collections for
the month of February of `4 lakhs and achieved 50
percent more - `6 lakhs
6
During one of the branch visits made by the CEO to
Kurla Branch, he was informed that Kurla Branch
had taken a stretched fee collection target of `5 lakhs
as against their original target of `4 lakhs. The CEO
challenged the team and raised the fee collection
target from `5 lakhs to `6 lakhs.
She reasoned in her mind that she had two ways to
bridge this gap and ensure she does not cut a sorry
face in the eyes of the CEO:
1. Collect maximum amount from fees that were
overdue
2. Give her Kurla Team an additional stretched target
of `1 lakh from fresh admissions
What actually transpired on the ground was mindboggling. The team worked in overdrive mode and
closed three full-paid admissions totalling to `1 lakh
across Diploma courses in Automobile, Electrical
and Mechanical.
This success was majorly possible because in prior
years, Prema had a span of control of over 4-5
branches and was used to taking on challenges
head-on with full confidence. The icing on the cake in
this situation is that for the month of March, Kurla
branch has doubled its original fee collection target
from `3.5 lakhs to `7 lakhs.
A proud grandmother to her daughter’s son, Prema
Sakpal drives her team with the enthusiasm of a
young leader raring to go. She and her team are very
confident they will not only meet the enhanced target
but also cross it.

A
s a part of the International Women’s Day
celebrations a self-defence workshop, with a
greater focus on women, was organized for the staff
and parents of Kohinoor Blossoms (KB) and
Kohinoor International School (KIS), Primary
Section.
The workshop was conducted by Mehul Vora from
‘Women’s Self-Defence Centre’, an initiative by
‘The Nippon Budo Sogo International India’. The
Women’s Self-Defence Centre founded in 2014 at
Andheri Sports Complex is a joint initiative by Aditya
Thackeray, Akshay Kumar and Mehul Vora.
In today’s time, it is imperative that all girls and
women are equipped with basic self-defence
techniques. Little does anyone know that a woman’s
purse is a Pandora’s box filled with articles that can
turn into deadly weapons when needed - car keys,
credit cards, deodorants, cell phones with hard
covers etc.
Well attended by 35 parents and 45 staff members
from KB and KIS (Primary), each participant went
back with an array of simple yet effective techniques
that they can easily use if required.

‘Rising from the Ashes’
W
Volume 1 l Issue 4 l April 2015
N
hat does one do when ‘Juvenile’ or ‘Children’
in the age-group of 14-18 years go down the
path of crime? You address it by nipping the issue in
the bud.
Kohinoor Technical Institute (KTI)-Hadapsar
Branch in association with ‘Catalysts for Social
Action’, a Not-For-Profit organization and Balvikas
Ayuktalaya, Maharashtra State, Pune, commenced
a 45 day training program in ‘Two Wheeler
Servicing’ between 22 January – 11 March 2015 at
Yerwada Jail, Pune, with a vision to improve the lives
of 10 bal gunhegar through an advocacy program
targeted at creating awareness of matters relating to
under-age children leaving the guilty life full of crime
and learning a new skill for their own independent
future.
A chance call from Lucy, Program Manager of
‘Catalyst for Social Action’ to Neeraja Satarkar, Area
Manager, Hadapsar Branch culminated into a very
fruitful meeting along with C D Sonawane, Branch
Manager of Hadapsar Branch and Chief of Balvikas
Ayuktalaya, Sharad Khuhade, to conceptualize a
program targeted at these young children to make
them give up their criminal lifestyle and attitude and
help them become good citizens. As a result of the
meeting, Sunil Patel, Faculty, Automobile Engineering
at KTI Hadapsar Branch formulated a fast-track
curriculum and developed a training program on
‘Two-Wheeler Servicing’ for these young children.
His ability to equip the children with not only Technical
Skills but also Life Skills throughout the course of 45
days has brought him very close to the children. As
a result, his counselling has convinced them to give
up their criminal attitude. At the time of certificate
distribution,
they
promised that they will
become
responsible
citizens.
The
children
also
mentioned
that
the
teachings of their mentor
Sunil
Patel
have
changed their outlook
towards life and brought
new skills to the fore in
them which they can
utilize as soon as they
are freed after their term.
Campus interviews and
7
pre-placement offers were arranged by KTI Pune
Placement Officer Swati Alhat right after the 45 day
course was completed in the presence of Dhone
Automobiles General Manager Prabhu and Raj
Kumar Shinde from Sai Prem Automobiles. This
effectively means that as soon as these children
serve their term, they will be authorized to work
across both these automobile companies. The Chief
Guests, Nitin Gaikwad, Program Manager
(Maharashtra State Child Protection Society) and
K J Chaudhari, Chief of Balnyaymandal
(Dandadhikari) appreciated the efforts taken by
Kohinoor Technical Institute Managers and Staffers
for conducting this very useful program. A significant
part of the motivation for these students came when
Vijay Gupte, AGM for Maharashtra visited Yerwada
Jail and spoke to the kids and to the Chief Sharad
Khuhade.
The success of this program is visible from the fact
that this same KTI Team has received an approval to
conduct a new batch for Mobile Repairing at the
same venue, that is, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru Udyog
Kendra, Bal Sudharak Kendra, Yerwada, Pune.

P
une is called the Fountain Head of Quality
Education in India. Because of the availability of
numerous educational courses, a significant number
of students aspire to come to this city for quality
education, not only from surrounding rural areas but
from many other states.
One such eminent personality, Nitin Ghatpande,
Group Director, Power Systems Group, Indian Space
Research Organization (ISRO) Satellite Centre,
Bengaluru, a Maharashtrian born in Pune was
felicitated at Kohinoor Technical Institute Deccan
Gymkhana Road Branch, Pune, for his contribution in
successful insertion of Mars Orbiter Mission (MOM)
in Martian Orbit. Uday Tade, who is the Electronics
Faculty at Pune DG Branch took the initiative and
made special efforts in arranging this event.
After an initial recce of the branch, Sandip Kavde,
Regional Manager of Pune DG Branch, showed the
workshops, laboratories and classrooms to the
guests. It was then time to begin the felicitation
ceremony of the Special Invitee and Chief Guest Nitin
Ghatpande in the Electronics Laboratory. The
program began with a brief introduction of the Chief
Guest by Uday Tade who narrated stories of late Dr
Vikram Sarabhai, founder father of India’s Space
Program. Nitin Ghatpande then addressed the
students and showed a model of the actual satellite
explaining its construction, technicalities and
functions. More than 70 students along with other
faculty members who were present in the classroom
felt a sense of pride listening to the person who
designed the Electronics Circuits, Battery and Solar
Panel towards the realization of the Spacecraft Power
System.
India’s maiden Mars Mission Mangalyaan or Mars
Orbiter Mission (MOM) will be facing its first outage in
June this year. This outage will be caused due to the
Sun positioning itself between MOM and Earth, thus
preventing signals from reaching Earth. However, the
ISRO team is confident that MOM will successfully
pass this 16-day blackout period. According to Nitin
Ghatpande, the signals sent from MOM during this
period will not be able to reach Earth as they will be
lost in between while passing through the solar
blockade. However, none of this data will be lost, he
assured.
