Even in the so called first world or rich country we can still encounter this: the poor and the rich. If the spirit of solidarity, subsidiarity and charity exist, it is possible for the rich and the poor to live together harmoniously in this earthly home. This Sunday’s first reading from the Book of the prophet Amos reminds us of the social issue between the poor and the rich. In Amos’ time especially in the Northern Kingdom of Israel the rich were oppressing the poor much just to gain from them their personal interest. They practiced injustices to the poor in their society. The rich people had no heart for them. The poor became poorer and the rich became richer. They didn’t show solidarity, subsidiarity and charity to their least fortunate brethren in their society. Yet God called Amos a poor and simple shepherd from Tekoa of the Southern Kingdom to be a prophet of social justice for the poor. A poor man; now become the prophet to speak social justice against the abusive rich guys in southern kingdom. Between the two classes, where are we (you)? Are we (you) the rich or poor class? Wherever we are in these classes of people in society God has a reason for each one of us. Probably it is the wisdom of God that some become rich so that in their riches they may become an instrument of charity to the poor and least fortunate. And God allows some to be poor that they may be a reminder that worldly wealth is not important in life but God alone. Whether rich or poor we are in this society as long as we respect the dignity of each one and treat each other as brothers and sisters created in the image and likeness of God; surely God is with us. And surely we live together on earth harmoniously as children of God. Amen. To be modestly and tastefully dressed is a sign of respect for God, for our selves, and for others. It’s a false assumption that God does not care how we dress. Jesus told us, “Whatever you do to the least of my brothers, you do it to me.” If our attire is indecently provocative (short shorts, strapless, backless, spaghetti strap dresses/tops, or displaying cleavage), displaying unwholesome graphics (skulls, advertisements, scantly clad people) or tattered, it becomes offensive to our brothers and sisters who are worshipping the Lord and therefore offensive to God’s Majesty. Ask this question: “Would you dress this way before God?” You are! He sees everything and you are in His house.
