By examining other remains of the Paleolithic Age(such as the hunting stones) collected in areas known today as Wonjeong-Ri and the new urban development areas of Cheongbuk-Myeon, it appears that people were present in Pyeongtaek area by the late Paleolithic Age. A relatively large number of people lived at Peongtaek in Neolithic Age when farming began. Artifacts proving the existence humans include Bangchuk-Ri artifacts, Jije-Dong artifacts. It appears therefore that our ancestors' life centered around fishing, hunting on a small scale in the mountain and streams of Pyeongtaek area during the Neolithic Age. As the Bronze and Iron Ages passed, our ancestors came to finally settle in this region. Until the Joseon Dynasty, the centers of Pyeongtaek were Jinwi-Myeon, where is north side of Pyeongtaek and Paengseong-Eup where is west side of Pyeongtaek. The present Pyeongtaek downtown, where is south east side of Pyeongtaek was formed with the improvement of the Gyeongbu Railway in 1905. As the business and habitation grew up around the railway station, the station area formed into downtown of Pyeongtaek. Originally, it was set up 50m southeast (on a hill) from its current location during the 10th year of King Hyojong’s reign (1659) to inform the people about the enforcement of the Dae Dong Law and to commemorate Kim Yuk’s virtue of caring for the people. Kim Yuk was the scholar that created the law; he was prime minister at the time. In hopes of lessening the financial burden of the people, he has reformed the corrupted tax payment system. Under the new Dae Dong Law, people were able to pay tribute in rice rather than the originally offered regional specialties. This law was in place from the 41st year of King Sunjo’s reign (1608) to the 31st year of King Gojong’s reign (1894). Also, educational inequalities and unfair labor practices were removed and private commercial transactions ran smoothly after the enforcement of the Dae Dong Law. After Yi Bangwon, the 5th son of King Taejo and the future 3rd king of Joseon, had Jeong Dojeon assassinated over their conflict over how the country should be governed, Jeong Dojeon’s descendants moved to Pyeongtaek and have been living here for more than 600 years. Jeong Dojeon’s contributions and accomplishments were respected by 52 53 04 CULTURAL HERITAGES AND HISTORIC SITES many succeeding kings. In fact, King Gojong respected him so much that he had Munheonsa, Jang Dojeon’s shrine, built in 1872 and let his descendants take care of it. The ancestral tablet and portrait of the deceased Jeong Dojeon is displayed inside the shrine. Also, the shine was designated as a Pyeongtaek Local Relic (no. 2) on March 5, 1986. Tomb and Shrine of Admiral Won Gyun Admiral Won Gyun made a great contribution in defeating the Japanese Navy when Japan invaded Korea in 1592. He is known for bringing home impressive victories against Japanese fleets during many battles, including the great victory of the Hansan Naval Battle (cooperated with Admiral Yi Sunshin). However during the Battle of Chilcheollyang, Admiral Won Gyun fought for his life but was unfortunately defeated. For the man that has scarified his life for his country, a tomb and shrine was built in his honor. At the admiral’s tomb, there is his memorial stone and a stone table, stone lantern, and 4 stone statues of civil officials and warriors placed in front of the royal tomb. The tomb was designated a Gyeonggido Monument (no. 57) and the shrine was designated as a Pyeongtaek Local Relic (no. 6). Being a Pyeongtaeker - Guide for Foreigners Paengseong-eup Guesthouse Over the span of centuries, this building has been rebuilt and repaired a number of times. Originally it was a small-scaled Paengseong-hyeon guesthouse during the Joseon Dynasty, but it was rebuilt to be enlarged during the period of Hyeonjong (1659~1674). Over the next century and half, it was repaired twice (36th year of Yeongjo [1760] and 1st year of Sunjo [1801]). The building attached to the main gate and the main building (guesthouse) that contains 9 rooms remain today. There are 3 part to the building: Jungdaecheong, Dongheon and Seoheon. Jungdaecheong, which is the middle part of the guesthouse with the highest roof, was where the wooden plate that symbolizes the king was kept and the head of the district bowed down to it twice a month. Dongheon and Seoheon (Dongseoheon for short) are located on the sides of Jungdaecheong. These two parts were used as a guesthouse; this is where the public officials from other districts stayed when they visited the area. As for the building attached to the gate, the central part is the main gate to the guesthouse and is decorated with a monitor roof. On the roofs of the main gate and Jungdaecheong, dragon head carvings are placed on the each ends to show the dignity of the administrative office.
