Chamber of Commerce Newsletter P.O. Box 1, Oceanside, NY 11572 516 763-9177 www.oceansidechamber.org Oceanside, Long Island, New York Citizen of the Year Maria Heller Volume VI Issue 64 January/February 2010 Business Person of the Year Marty Bevilacqua of Oceanville Mason Supply The Oceanside Chamber of Commerce is proud to honor Maria Heller as this year’s Citizen of the Year. Maria grew up in Oceanside, married Bernard, and raised her family here. She considers her three children to be her greatest accomplishment. Janet, a Rockville Centre Attorney; Ann, a Compliance Officer at South Nassau Communities Hospital; and Tom who trains computer science teachers in Burlington, Vermont. Maria is a devoted grandmother to five grandchildren: Chris, Mike, Paul, Brian and Jenna. Maria started her work career in the late 1960’s as a teacher’s aide at School #5. She received a Lifetime Membership from PTA for her longtime involvement with that organization. She also served 25 years as an Oceanside 4-H leader – her home becoming a breeding ground for many amusing animal husbandry projects, including the hatching and herding of ducks in her dining room. And don’t even ask about the snakes, hamsters or gerbils! Maria is a member of the South Nassau Communities Hospital Advocacy Board and has been active in the South Nassau Communities Hospital Council, helping with hospital fundraising. For many years, Maria has handled publicity for the Long Island Charter Chapter of the American Business Women’s Association - a national women’s association that promotes networking and secures scholarships for deserving women. She was named ABWA’s “Woman of the Year” in 1986. Maria has been a member of Oceanside Kiwanis Club since 1994, where she volunteers her marketing expertise to serve whenever and wherever needed, particularly in preparing programs, publications and the promotion The Oceanside Chamber of Commerce is very pleased to have selected Oceanville Mason Supply’s Marty Bevilaqua as Business Person of the Year. Marty is the kind of business owner who does Oceanside proud! Generous and thoughtful toward his employees - always keeping in mind their family and community obligations - he obliges without hesitation when those obligations call them away on a given workday. He treats his customers as neighbors, always putting their satisfaction above making an extra buck. He tries to help out fellow business owners whenever possible and continually makes improvements to his properties. All of these things make Marty Bevilaqua a business person who makes Oceanside a better place to live, work and shop. Marty is a sponsor of every Kiwanis event throughout the year, and was a founding sponsor of the Summer Gazebo Reading Series. He supports South Nassau Communities Hospital, Saint Anthony’s Church, Oceanside High School Dawn Delirium, Oceanside Stallions Hockey, Rockville Centre Lions Club (which partners for events with Oceanside Kiwanis), Rockville Centre Guild for the Arts and Molloy College. In addition, Marty supports fundraisers with donations and/or supplies and materials at cost for the Oceanside Education Foundation, Boy Scout Eagle projects and the First Methodist Church. We suspect there are many more recipients of his support in our community, but Marty does many of these quietly and without fanfare. And he’s not telling! Continued on page 2 Continued on page 2 Outstanding Youth Award Casey English Casey English is a proud and active member of the Oceanside Community. Casey prides herself on her ability to balance her school work and her wide variety of extra-curricular activities at Oceanside High School. Currently, Casey maintains a weighted average of 97.75 and has taken 8 AP courses since her Sophomore year at OHS. Casey has taken Spanish for three years and is now in her second year of study in Mandarin Chinese. She has excelled in the language and plans to continue her study of Mandarin in college. She also is involved in a number of clubs and serves as the Student Body President of the high school, as well as the President of DECA and Gay-Straight Alliance. In the classroom, Casey has challenged herself by taking multiple Advanced Placement courses. She is currently enrolled in AP English Literature and Composition, AP Environmental Science, AP Calculus, and AP Government. Casey has shown an interest towards the business field and over the past four years has taken almost every business course the high school offers. Casey is currently the President of the Oceanside chapter of DECA. She has won awards at DECA’s New York State Career Conference and has also competed at the national level. Casey plans to study international business at the college level. Outside of the classroom, Casey has devoted much of her time towards improving the Oceanside High School and the surrounding community. Casey has been involved in Student Government for four years and is Chamber Dinner Dance ♦ February 20, 2010 Continued on page 2 A Message from Our Incoming Chamber President…Gail Carlin It is my honor and pleasure to serve as the new incoming president of the Oceanside Chamber of Commerce. My goals are simple yet complex: to support the growth and development of business in the community and to keep members informed and connected. As we usher in a new decade, let us embrace the challenges that face us, keep a positive attitude and support each other’s businesses. Like any successful company, program or chamber, we can not do it alone. If we were to consider for a moment ourselves as individual snowflakes, you may ask, “What difference can we make?’ But when we stick together, our effect will be solid and strong. I look forward to working with you and on behalf of the chamber board of directors, I thank you for your support. A Message from Our Outgoing Chamber President…Joseph Garay It has been my honor to serve as the President of our Chamber of Commerce for the past two years. While I will be stepping down as President and no longer serving on the Chamber board, I plan on being an active Chamber member representing the Oceanside Christopher Federal Credit Union. Our new President, Cail Carlin and the rest of the board of our Chamber are a mixture of people representing all kinds of commerce who share a common dedication for and perform diligent work on behalf of the businesses in our community. Oceanside is a better place to live, work and play because of them. We are acutely aware of the difficult economic environment afflicting our country, our county and our community. As the voice of our business community the Chamber stands ready to help. Now more than ever it is important to know exactly who you do business with. Who are the owners and workers? Support local entities when possible and take advantage of the networking opportunities your Chamber provides. Make no mistake the Chamber is here to serve your interests. We all have the ability to make a difference in Oceanside as individual businesses, but together we can have the greatest impact working as a community to support growth and prosperity in Oceanside. Joseph Garay, President/CEO 516-620-8006 The Chamber of Commerce will e-mail this Newsletter to all members who register their e-mail with us. If you have not yet given us your e-mail, please call 516-763-9177 or visit www.oceansidechamber.org to register today. Printed copies will also be available at the Library, diners & banks. Citizen of the Year Maria Heller Continued from page 1 for the Pancake Breakfast and Annual Charter Night Dinner Dance - to name a few. Maria also handles Public Relations for Kiwanis Southwest Division. Maria worked as production manager with Hank Bialick for the Oceanside Beacon, Baldwin Citizen and East Rockaway Observer. When The Beacon was sold, Maria - inspired by long-time friend and respected Oceanside businesswoman Edyth DeBaun - decided to open her own business. Maria ran Publicity Plus for 15 years, providing her personal touch to publicity and printing services for businesses and the Oceanside community. Five years ago, she merged Publicity Plus with Minuteman Press of Rockville Centre, where she continues to serve her clients with the same care and efficiency she offered at Publicity Plus. Her business experience, work ethic and untiring service to the community earned Maria the “Business Woman of the Year” award in 1992 from the Oceanside Chamber of Commerce. As an active member of the First United Methodist Church in Oceanside, Maria volunteers her time on all committees and aspects of church life – from gardening Church grounds and photographing church events to delivering home-designed flower arrangements to the sick, shut-ins and nursing home residents. Maria fondly refers to the church as her “second family” and credits the congregation and Pastor Janet Porcher with giving her the encouragement and support that keeps her going. Maria is also a member of the Oceanside Garden Club, where she is consistently active in flower planting projects around town – including Schoolhouse Green. Her other activities include Oceanside Community Service and the Oceanside Education Foundation, where, at the turn of the century, she teamed up with OEF President and friend, Betsy Transom, to reprint Walter S. Boardman’s “The Story of Oceanside” - adding vintage photographs and old newspaper articles. Profits from the sale of the book went to the Oceanside School District. Maria and Betsy hope to one day publish a sequel together with Dr. Michael Orzano, who would add his extensive research he recently compiled on the history of American Indians in the area. In 1978, Maria joined The Oceanside Board of Trade, which in 1992 became the Oceanside Chamber of Commerce, where she has been a pivotal member for more than twenty years. Her motivation and purpose strengthened the organization, enabling it to undertake additional community projects and greatly increase membership. Maria has served as the Chamber’s President and Vice President as well as multiple terms as Recording Secretary. She publishes the quarterly Chamber Newsletter and journal, in addition to carrying out duties of The Triangle Liberty Lighthouse Committee with Kathy and Bob Towers. For years, she has been the driving force behind many other Chamber events including the Installation Dinner Dance and her Summer Arts and Crafts Fair – first year of Schoolhouse Green. For her outstanding service, Maria received the prestigious Oceanside Chamber of Commerce Lifetime Achievement Award in 2006. Awarded to only five other members in the past thirty years, the Award is presented to individuals who have contributed to the Chamber’s growth and made an impact on the community as a whole. Wanting to be just like Grandma, Maria’s 8 year-old granddaughter, Jenna, recently opened her own writing/publishing business called JennPlus – which she runs from her new white desk in the playroom. One day, Jenna made some creative edits while proofreading Grandma’s work: “The Story of Oceanside was founded in 1871 and then it was Christian Hook and then it became Oceanville and then under the wise old Grandma Maria it was changed to Oceanside.” Ironically, Jenna hit on something we all know about Maria: that her presence has indeed changed this town to the Oceanside we know today. That her loyalty and service to the businesses and citizens of this community have truly made Oceanside a better place. This evening, it is with great pleasure and great pride that the Oceanside Chamber of Commerce honors one of its own – Maria Heller - for her innumerable and ongoing contributions to Oceanside. Business Person of the Year Marty Bevilacqua of Oceanside Mason Supply Continued from page 1 In addition to these, Marty is the founder of The De La Salle School in Freeport - a Middle School dedicated to the education of academically disadvantaged Middle School Boys. His support is ongoing and the school is getting wonderful results and changing lives. Marty is currently donating slate to be used at the Liberty Lighthouse Triangle at the center of town. Ever generous and looking out for his community, he volunteered this, unsolicited, and has offered to donate more if needed. A smart, hardworking businessman, Marty has a good business partner standing beside him in all he does – his wife, Susan. Marty and his wife have two boys Matthew and Mark and has lived in Rockville Centre for 20 years. Opened his business Oceanville Mason Supply on Long Beach Road 7 years ago. Oceanside is indeed lucky to have such a generous neighbor, great boss and good man as part of its business community! Outstanding Youth Award Casey English Continued from page 1 currently the G.O. President, the highest position in Student Government. Student Government organizes most of the school activities and Casey is found at almost every school event. Each year, Student Government raises several thousand dollars for a variety of charities including the American Cancer Society, Island Harvest, the Oceanside District Scholarship Fund, Autism Speaks and the Wounded Warriors Foundation among others. Casey was involved in the organization of World Outreach Week, a week devoted to peers teaching peers about an array of international issues ranging from hunger and poverty to genocide and pollution. She has been the chief organizer of the event for the past two years and speaks to hundreds of her peers while raising money for organizations that coincide with the issues addressed. Additionally, Casey is the President of the high school’s Gay-Straight Alliance. GSA focuses on making the school environment a safe and comfortable place for all students. The club organizes fundraisers and often donates money to local organizations. This past spring, the Long Island Gay and Lesbian Youth (LIGALY) building was vandalized and Casey worked with the club to raise several hundred dollars for the damage. Casey is also a member of the high school’s Recycling Club and Kayak Club. She also has been awarded various academic honors including induction into the World Language Honor Society and National Honor Society. Casey has devoted much of her time to the World Interest Club. WIC is Oceanside’s Model United Nations team. Each year, Casey travels to Brown University, Harvard University, and the University of Chicago to compete at Model UN conferences. She has won Best Delegate Outstanding Delegate awards at Brown, Harvard and Chicago over the past four years. Casey was also part of the 2008-2009 team that won the prestigious award of Outstanding Large Delegation at Harvard University. The World Interest Club has sparked Casey’s interest in international studies and is the reason she plans on studying international business in college. Some of Casey’s other interests include traveling and snowboarding. Casey has visited almost every major city in the United States and traveled to France last year with the high school. She also enjoys spending time with her friends and family. Casey is the youngest of four and loves spending time with her older brothers Johnny and Ryan and her older sister Lindsey. Casey’s parents Trina and John are proud of her accomplishments and know she will succeed in college next year. Casey is sad to leave the community she has grown up in however is excited to enter the next chapter of her life. We expect to see great things from Casey in the future! The Chamber of Commerce is pleased to add Casey to the prestige list of outstanding students of the year were she will be honored at our Installation Dinner Dance February 20, 2010 at Kombert Caterers in Oceanside. Santino With the first winter storms just around the corner it’s not to early to focus on some important tips that will help keep you and your family safe when “Old Man Winter” strikes: • Warn your children to stay away from snowplows. Drivers concentrate on clearing the snow and may not be able to see the little ones from their vehicles. • Keep your children from playing or sledding in the streets. Snow banks make it difficult for drivers and plow operators to spot youngsters. • Ice can be a hazard for those on foot. Property owners are required by law to remove ice from their sidewalks within 12 hours after snowfall. Stock up on ice melt early. Make certain that it contains calcium chloride or potassium chloride. Only a small amount is needed, and it is preferable for the environment. Avoid rock salt or sodium chloride, which kills plants and lawns. Apply ice melt on your driveway entrance and sidewalks early and often, to prevent melting snow from packing down and forming into ice overnight when temperatures drop. • Don’t shovel snow into the streets. • If your home or business is located on a corner, shovel an opening to the street. For a crosswalk, please shovel a wide opening (for strollers and wheelchairs) to help pedestrians reach the sidewalk safely. Owners of corner properties are required to shovel sidewalks on both sides of their lot. • Clear a space for your garbage and recycling containers. When picking up, sanitation workers cannot climb over snow banks. • If you have a fire hydrant in front of your home or business, be sure it is clear of snow. • Be patient and wait for the street crews to finish plowing. The street may be plowed multiple times depending on the duration of the storm. The workers will plow until streets are cleared. Many people shovel out their cars and driveways prior to crews clearing the streets, only to find vehicles or property covered with snow after the plows pass. • It is impossible for plows to avoid pushing snow back on cars or into driveways, as they work to keep roads passable. Be patient and don’t park your vehicles in the streets until plows are finished clearing the road. • Try not to drive or shovel during early stages of the snowstorm. This will give the plows time and optimum conditions to complete their operations quickly and safely for everyone. • Please do not call the police or highway department to learn when your street will be plowed. Telephone lines need to be kept open for emergencies. These are some important suggestions, I am offering to lessen problems and provide safer conditions during snowstorm. Please keep safe and warm during the winter months. sn i t’ st a house...it o t ju ’s y Nancy Achstatter e-PRO, GRI Licensed Broker/Owner ou rh . ome Beca use Support those businesses that support the Chamber of Commerce & Catering 230 Merrick Road • Oceanside, NY 11572 Office: 516.536.2200 • Fax: 516.594.8619 Cell: 516.782.5753 HomeandHearth@TopProducer.com • www.HomeandHearthre.com Fax: 516-764-0090 10 10 10 10 10 10 10 10 10 10 10 10 Maria Heller For all your printing & photography needs 763-3222 • 766-4575 Rockville Centre • Oceanside 10 10 11 11 10 One Healthy Way Oceanside, New York 516-632-3000 Chamber 2009 Holiday Party Home & Hearth for the holidays Home and Hearth Real Estate owners, agents & friends roll up their sleeves to sort, wrap & deliver food & toy for Ocear South Shore Fitness has an exclusive offer for Oceanside Chamber of Commerce members and their employees. 75% off enrollment fee & Dues starting @ 19.99 a month The Lowest Rate to drop the weight See Christine Vollkommer for Details 516 594-9014 Oceanside kiwanis Super Bowl Pancake Breakfast Sunday, February 7 9 AM - 12:30 St Anthony’s Cafeteria 110 Anchor Avenue Kids $3 • Adults $5 Membership Invoice 2010 Dues Notice Special offer if paid by February 28, 2010 Membership Dues (Business Only) $125.00 Membership Dues Business Only Website link & Business Card Ad $200.00 As of March 1 the prices are as follows Membership Dues (Business only)........................................................ $135.00 Business Card Ad (from 1 yr from date if insertion) enclose 2 cards.... $75.00 Website Link............................................................................................ $50.00 Website Link & Business Card Ad....................................................... $100.00 Associated Membership Dues (Residents Only)................................... $40.00 Please make checks payable to: Oceanside Chamber of Commerce and mail in the enclosed envelope to: Oceanside Chamber of Commerce, PO Box 1, Oceanside, New York 11572 Come join us at our General Luncheon meetings at 1:00 pm on the 1st Thursday of the month at Union Park Café, 2823 Long Beach Rd., Oceanside, NY Check the chamber’s website (www.oceansidechamber.org) for upcoming evening and networking meetings!
