EMMR TIMES The A quarterly publication of the Eastern Museum of Motor Racing Located at 100 Baltimore Road, York Springs, PA 2014 Issue No. 4 • published in mid-October 2014 Historic Latimore Valley Racetrack echoed with the roar of engines again. Track time for antique and vintage race cars was held on Saturday and Sunday. 2014 Issue No. 4 • published in mid-October 2014 The EMMR Times Stan Lobitz (center) laughs as Amanda Eshenour and Lynn Paxton supply amusing comments during the presentation of a plaque honoring Stan as one of the Convention’s Grand Marshalls on Sunday, August 17th. Stan Lobitz has been a long-time supporter of EMMR. PHOTO BY RICK MANDELSON The 40th Annual EMMR/WGOT Convention has come and gone and we look back on the great weekend we had. It started Friday August 15 at the Museum when we honored ARDC’s 75th Years of Racing and Williams Grove Speedway with a roundtable featuring Ray Bull, six-time ARDC Champion. Up next was Jim Gerber son of John Gerber who came from Davenport, Iowa. The Friday evening Cruise-In on the lawn in front of the museum had a great turnout with 130 cars: classics, hot rods, muscle cars, trucks, etc. You can see pictures and read more about the Cruise-in on page 5. Also on Friday nite roughly 41 race cars belonging to EMMR members traveled to Williams Grove Speedway to help them celebrate the 75th year of racing at “the Grove.” After a busy Friday evening, the Convention’s events continued with Saturday’s track time from noon to 3 p.m. at Latimore Valley Fairgrounds— it went off without a hitch. Track time at EMMR’s own dirt track allows museum members the rare opportunity to run their vintage and antique race cars on an historic dirt track. In addition, visitors enjoy a rare look at the cars in running condition, but not actually “racing.” There was a good turn out Saturday night at Lincoln Speedway where EMMR members had static displays of their race cars, plus track time. EMMR also had a good auction making about $1,300. Sunday started out cold, damp, and rainy but shortly after the Membership Meeting the rain stopped and the cars that stuck around at Latimore Valley Racetrack had some really good track time from 1 to 4 p.m. The track time held several times per year truly makes EMMR a living history museum. There were plenty of laughs coming from the Museum that afternoon during Stan Lobitz Roast. Everyone there seemed to Continued on page 2 PHOTO BY DENNIS UNGER EMMR/WGOT Convention was held August 15-17, 2014 Perry Trimmer (holding plaque) and Judy Freels (on left) gather with their family to accept the honor of being Grand Marshalls. We would like to thank all our volunteers that helped get the Museum, Fairgrounds and Track ready for this weekend! We also want to thank everyone who helped behind the scenes. Without all the help this weekend would not have been such a great success. —Amanda Eshenour John Miller, Jim Gerber’s friend Merle (Duke) Mueller, Stan Lobitz, Jim Gerber, and Nancy Miller. 2 The EMMR Times 2014 Issue No. 4 • published in mid-October 2014 Photos courtesy of Rick Mandelson EMMR/WGOT Convention If you did not attend the 2014 Convention, look what you missed! 2014 Issue No. 4 • published in mid-October 2014 The EMMR Times 3 Photos courtesy of Rick Mandelson EMMR/WGOT Convention BOARD MEETINGS All are welcome to attend, 4th Tuesday of the month, 7:00 pm at EMMR. On Saturday, December 6th at the Holiday Open House we will be hosting a roundtable discussion of the 50th Anniversary of the “Woodstock of Drag Racing” which occurred at York US 30 Dragway during the presentation of the 1st Super Stock Nationals event which turned out to be the largest one day drag racing event in the history of the sport. A mark that still stands today. Several Legends of Drag Racing will participate with us which will include Bob Harrop of Laurel Spring, New Jersey who was the Unlimited Class Winner of the event. A subsequent celebration of the 50th Anniversary will be held at the York Reunion on July 10–11th at the York Expo Center, York Fairgrounds which will also present a Salute to the Orphans: Plymouth, Pontiac, Oldsmobile, Mercury, and AMC. A whole new display of vehicles is planned for the drag racing display at EMMR for 2015 which will include the ’65 altered wheelbase “Honker” of Bud Faubel, and the Roger Sinistri and Larry Lombardo “Buckshot” Corvette to name two. We will be adding two more Legends to our case displays which will include the dedication of the Sox & Martin race team and one for Malcolm Durham. We will also recognize the 50th birthday of the Pontiac GTO as well. Join us for the many great memories. —Darwin Doll mcmyork02@comcast.net 2015 will mark the 50th Anniversary of the “Woodstock of Drag Racing” which occurred August 7, 1965 at York US 30 Dragway and is heralded as The Largest One-day Event in the History of Drag Racing. Kicking off the celebration will be a roundtable discussion on Saturday, December 6th at EMMR’s Holiday Open House. The cover story for the November 1965 issue of Super Stock & Drag Illustrated magazine featured great photos from “1965 Super Stock Magazine Nationals” which was held at the York US 30 Dragway. The Roundtable on December 6th will feature this historic event that is still the talk of the drag racing world. The dragway, located west of York in York County, Penna., closed in 1979, but is now remembered yearly as part of “Muscle Car Madness.” Drag Racers now have a permanent exhibit at EMMR. TOY & RACING MEMORABILIA SHOW The second annual show was held on Saturday September 21 on a beautiful sunny day. Booths were set up on the grassy lawn in front of the museum and free admission allowed visitors to 6 search for that special toy or racing memorabilia. Thanks go to Darwin Doll for helping to coordinate this event which adds even more variety to the numerous events at EMMR. The EMMR Times 2014 Issue No. 4 • published in mid-October 2014 FROM THE PRESIDENT From Lynn Paxton When I attended the ground breaking ceremonies at EMMR many years ago, never in my wildest dream did I think I may be an EMMR officer some day! So let me introduce myself: I was born and raised in Port Royal Penna. so when my father was a meNancy Miller chanic for Boyd Groninger, mom President, and I sat in the same seat year after EMMR year on the old grandstand. In the 1980s and 1990s I was an EMT for Silver Spring Ambulance and we served Silver Spring Speedway and that is how I became aquainted with Alan Kreitzer and Gary Wolford. I was also Chief of the Ambulance Company, We had a vintage car so after several years Joe Heisler asked me to help with coordinating the cars as EMMR members exhibited their cars at Williams Grove, Port Royal and Shippensburg Speedways. I also had more time to commit to the museum volunteer staff. So in advance I want to thank all the volunteers for their work in the upcoming year. My husband John and I have been married for 44 years and he brought six children with him to gather with my two and we had a lively household! We now have seventeen grand children and twenty eight great grandchildren. I am retired from the Kinney shoe Corp. I want to thank Rick Mandelson as it was his idea that I consider volunteering for the office of President of EMMR. I will need the help of Lynn Paxton and Amanda Eshenour to transition into this office and I will serve it to the best of my ability. — Nancy Miller hipgrandma@aol.com First I want to introduce EMMR’s first woman President, Nancy Miller. Those of you that run or show cars at the various race tracks know Nancy. She always has a smile and is willing to help with any problems, and now she is going to use those skills to run EMMR. We all must support her and help in any way we can. My job will be curator of EMMR along with helping Nancy get acquainted with her new position. I’m very confident she will do an excellent job. Our 40th EMMR Convention was a great success. I want to thank all the volunteers that worked hard to make it so. We had a great turn out for Cruise-in and EMMR members’ race car participation was good at Williams Grove, Lincoln, and Latimore. It was great to have Jim Gerber and his friend Duke in from Davenport, Iowa and Billy Engelhart from Wisconsin. It’s always good to see Harry Eckert, his wife, and son…and we can’t forget our Aussie friend, John Loxton from Australia. Our friend, Gary Wolford, is under the weather, but he has issued a challenge to all of us to pay off the bank this year. You know Gary always gets his way.
