Lifestyle Arts, Beach Life and Cafes Benefits of Locating The Right Place for your Family and Business Demographics Well Educated and Creative Downtown Melbourne has its roots going back to a small community located on a natural harbor of the Indian River Lagoon known as “Crane Creek,” the name of the fresh water river which ambled parallel to the downtown’s main corridor to the salty lagoon. At the time, barge traffic along the Indian River brought supplies and new arrivals along the peninsula, and the creek provided easy access into Melbourne Harbor. Today, Historic Downtown Melbourne is gaining recognition as one of Brevard County’s hottest areas with an eclectic mix of restaurants, galleries, shopping and night spots. Originally named “Crane Creek”, the areas first settlers were freed slaves – Captain Peter Wright, Balaam Allan, and the Wright Brothers. In 1893 the Florida East Coast Railway arrived in Eau Gallie and brought significant development to the area. Several freezes, devastating fires and economic depression during WWI ended this prosperous period of development. The Great Florida Land Boom period of the 1920s brought another wave of new development in Melbourne. In 1969, the City of Eau Gallie and the City of Melbourne consolidated into what is presently recognized as the City of Melbourne. Today, Melbourne has two historic downtown areas with distinct personalities – Historic Downtown Melbourne and Olde Eau Gallie. c.1900, stores on Front Street that backed up to the Indian River (above) 1900 BUILDING, THE MELBOURNE HOTEL Constructed Melbourne’s as a monument booming to automotive industry in 1924, the Melbourne Hotel was a Mediterranean Revival building facing the town’s first signalized intersection at US 1 and New Haven Avenue. From the first missile testing at Cape Canaveral in 1953 and after the arrival of NASA in 1962, the Space Race would greatly transform the shape of Melbourne and Eau Gallie into an area with modern systems of transportation, communication, education, health care, retail, technology, finance and public service. “Our success in winning new business has resulted in the need to expand facilities in more of our locations and we found a great opportunity to accomplish that in Melbourne” - Jeff Moore, Senior Vice President of Operations, Rockwell Collins 2013 • www.melbourneflorida.org • 8 telling the story CHARACTER | HISTORIC | AMENITIES | GENERATIONS | STABLE | VALUE ON THE SHOULDERS OF GIANTS Today, Melbourne is recognized as being “hard-wired for technology”, and has grown to be the home of established technology and defense stalwarts such as Rockwell Collins, Northrop Grumman, and Harris Corporation and up and coming technology, aerospace and defense related businesses such as Embraer and DRS Technologies.
