I myself have been very busy with the chores of the Swap Meet. Hopefully I will have Swap Meet tee shirts ready to be picked up by all the members who ordered them at our next meeting. We will be discussing the Swap Meet again at the next meeting. Also we will be resuming the Cruisein on the 1/16/2014 so we need all the volunteers we can get. I hope everyone had a great time at the Christmas party. We had lots of fun and the food was great. We missed all the Mobsters who couldn’t attend our last meeting. If you can’t attend the upcoming meeting, we will be at the Wickham Pavilion on 1/17/2014 for the set up of the Swap Meet at 8am for those wanting to help. We will meet the next day on 1/18/2014 at 5:15am to have meetings with the Mobsters who have signed up for specific jobs such as: food sales, raffles, tee shirt sales, registration, car parking and vender parking. The event will go smoother with as many Mobsters that help out. This happens once year, so please come out as early as possible. There will be plenty of jobs that need to be done. Thanks President Pete Stasio MOB Meeting at Tony’s Hotrod Hoagies Thursday January 9, 2014 At 7pm At Tony’s Hotrod Hoagies We will have a private meeting room. Herb was an ace handling the 4-speed muscle cars of the day, hence his well deserved nickname, Mr. 4 Speed. Started racing at Halls Tennessee Airport in the early 60’s driving a 1960 348 Chevy. 1968 - Quit his job at a printing company where he worked when he couldn’t get time off to compete in California. He began racing full time winning 36 out of 52 races in the Southern Style Heads Up events. It was a career that required seemingly endless travel. Race weekends sometimes stretched from Thursdays into Sundays. Two of his sons were born while he was hundreds of miles away. 1970 - Joined the world famous Mopar team of Sox & Martin as team driver. The dominating pair of Sox & Martin, headquartered in Burlington, NC, had decided to expand their operation to two full-time Pro Stock cars. 1970 - Won the U.S. Nationals in Indianapolis and also became the first person to win a NHRA title in the sportsman and pro eliminator divisions in the same year. 1972 - In the Sox & Martin car, Herb became the first pro stock driver to run 8.50’s and won 4 of 6 United Racing Team events in a row. He raced with the Sox & Martin team through 1974. 1975 - Opened Herb McCandless Performance Parts in Graham, NC where he served the drag racing community as a Hemi engine expert for the next twenty-two years. During this time he furthered a long standing relationship with Chrysler as a researcher and developer and was instrumental in the development of the W2 Cylinder Head Program. 1976 - Using the W2 heads, Herb won 3 IHRA Super Modified events. Herb has been inducted into the NHRA Division 2 Hall of Fame, Super Stock Magazine Hall of Fame, East Coast Drag Times Hall of Fame, the North Carolina Drag Racing Hall of Fame and the Mopar Hall of Fame. Herb presently resides in Burlington, North Carolina. 3 January 2014 Volume 3, Issue 1 Al Capone aiding President Roosevelt with his car Article forward by Roger Bukowski The Art of the Automobile Car Show By Paul Vatcher Former Mob member, Wayne Darby and I went to " The Art of the Automobile" car show hosted by the Lutheran Church on November 30th at Cocoa Beach. There were 40 plus cars on a nice day interrupted by one slight rain shower. After partaking of free hot dogs, chips, cookies, and drinks and enjoying visiting with other car people we were surprised to receive trophies for Wayne's 71 GTX, " Best Muscle Car" and my 70 for "Best Classic Car"! This is the third year I have attended this low key, fun show in conjunction with the Space Coast Art Show. 4 January 2014 Volume 3, Issue 1 Editors Commentary By John Capua We had our annual Christmas Party and had a lot of fun socializing with those that came and of course the gifts. Food and the service was excellent and a great choice by Steve. President Pete talked about some upcoming events and caught me off guard where I talked about the car show events for 2014 (Please review them in this newsletter for there are a lot of events for the upcoming months). New officers were elected in with Larry Knerr as the Treasurer, Mark Walters at the Secretary and myself as the Vice President. I anticipate new changes for 2014 with the MOB for fun events. I will talk more on this later.
