Details of Travel
3.

meet with organisers regarding future collaboration on activities common to both the Riverfest and
Melbourne Moomba Waterfest.
4.
Cr Snedden attended a meeting with Judith MacLean, Chair of Major Brisbane Festivals P/L and
Michael Snelling the Chief Executive Officer, and Jonathan Parson the Riverfestival Creative
Director. At the invitation of Conrad Treasury, Cr Snedden attended the key event during the
Riverfestival, the “Riverfeast” on Wednesday 7 September 2005.

Outcomes and Benefits
7.
Cr Snedden gained a valuable insight into operations of the Bisbane Riverfest organisation
including funding arrangements, partnership agreements between state and local governments and
the evolution of the event from a 22 year old local event to one which marries the elements of
science, art, culture and public celebration on an international scale.
8.
Cr Snedden discussed the linking of three universities with the appropriate state government
department to establish the symposium on water catchment and management and the establishment
of the International water centre in Brisbane. The inclusion of a scientific aspect to the event has
brought international recognition and participation in the festival and assisted in the education of
the Brisbane community in issues of water conservation and waterway management. This is an
opportunity which could involve universities in Melbourne with the various water authorities in
addressing water issues and providing a community education aspect to participants at Moomba
Waterfest.
9.
Cr Snedden secured Sarina Russo as the keynote speaker for the Women’s Business Lunch at the
2005 Melbourne Business Festival.
10.
The organising committee agreed to establish a strategic partnership approach to sharing ideas and
working collaboratively where appropriate across the respective festivals. To this end, the Chair
has agreed to meet with Council to assist in the development of the five year strategic plan for
Melbourne Moomba Waterfest, currently being written for post Commonwealth Games.
Relation to Council Policy
11.
The proposal relates to Council Plan Objective 3: Inclusive and engaging city. Specifically 3.0.04:
Promote the city and the "city experience" as the focus of the Melbourne major events and festival
program.
Costs
12.
The total cost of Cr Snedden’s travel was $647.00.
13.
The total cost of Scott Chapman’s travel was $652.00. This includes a return airfare from
Melbourne to Brisbane, one night’s accommodation and parking at the airport.
