ROLE MODELS Carolyn Creswell 20 years ago Carolyn discovered her passion. What began as a simple babysitting gig soon translated into her working one day a week in the family’s home-made muesli business, travelling around Melbourne. Upon being told she was going to lose her job, Carolyn took the plunge and bought half the tiny business for $1,000. For the first five years she was broke. Carman’s has grown to be the number one selling muesli and bar brand on Australian supermarket shelves and now exports to 32 countries world-wide. Carolyn has achieved recognition across a number of awards including the 2007 Ernst and Young Australian Young Entrepreneur of the Year and the 2012 Telstra Australian Business Woman of the Year. All the while managing to raise 4 children under the age of 9 and maintain a successful marriage! Today, Carolyn runs Carman’s on a day to day basis, as well as a board member of the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Foundation which puts kitchens and organic gardens in primary schools to give children the chance to grow, harvest and prepare food, which she is very passionate about. She is a role model for Australians who have always wanted to take the plunge on that great business idea or opportunity. George Calombaris One of Australia’s most recognisable chefs and a judge of MasterChef Australia, George owns multiple award winning restaurants in Melbourne including The Press Club, Hellenic Republic, St Katherine’s, PM24, Mama Baba, Gazi, Jimmy Grants and one in Mykonos, Greece. His career started at Hotel Sofitel in Melbourne under Raymond Capaldi. After his apprenticeship, George teamed up with Capaldi and Sofitel’s executive sous chef Gary Mehigan to open Fenix, where he worked for two years. He entered the Bocuse d’Or culinary grand prix in Lyon, France, achieving the best result ever for an Australian representative. George spent two years at Reserve, where at the age of 24, he won Young Chef of the Year, Best New Restaurant and two chef’s hats in The Age Good Food Guide. In 2004, the Global Food and Wine Magazine voted him as one of the Top 40 chefs of influence in the world. His flagship Melbourne restaurant, The Press Club, was awarded The Age Good Food Guide ‘Best New Restaurant 2008’ with George named ‘Chef of the Year 2008’. He has published five cookbooks: The Press Club, Hellenic Heart: Greek Cooking from The Hellenic Heart, Your Place or Mine and Cook With Us with Gary Mehigan and Georgie Porgie. Elizabeth Chong Elizabeth was born in a small provincial town on the outskirts of Guangzhou, formerly Canton, China. Admired by her peers, restauranteurs and food writers alike, she is respectfully and affectionately known as ‘The Empress of Chinatown’. With boundless energy, Elizabeth embraces the many aspects of food both in Australia and overseas. Her 8 books on Chinese Cuisine include The Heritage of Chinese Cooking which won the prestigious ‘Prix La Mazille’ as ‘International Cookbook of the Year’. Elizabeth conducts regular tours of Melbourne’s Chinatown precinct, as well as teaching in her highly successful Cooking School. She leads culinary tours into Asia and presides over her own Gourmet Club which explores adventures in Asian cuisine around Melbourne. Many awards have been bestowed upon Elizabeth, including the designation ‘Special Legend’ citation by the Melbourne Food and Wine Festival, a Best Television Segment award from the organisers of Tasting Australia, nominated Australian Ambassador for Hong Kong and a Jaguar Award recipient for Excellence from Gourmet Traveller. Elizabeth is proudly Australian, yet maintains strong links with her Chinese heritage and cultural background. She is a marvellous spokesperson for multiculturalism in this country and is firmly committed to building bridges between the two worlds in which she belongs. Kelly Cartwright At the tender age of 15, after being diagnosed with a rare and aggressive form of cancer in her right knee, Kelly had her leg amputated. After a painstaking 3 months of rehabilitation she was fitted with a prosthetic leg. Having learnt to walk again, and facing the reality that her netball career was over, she looked for a new direction. That direction was running. Sprinting with an artificial leg proved a challenge, though with every fall Kelly became stronger and more determined to succeed at her goal to be the best above-knee amputee 100m sprinter in the world. In 2009 Kelly became the first above-knee amputee woman to climb to the summit of Mt Kilimanjaro. She reached her goal as a World Champion in 2011 with two Gold medals and a new world record in the long jump. Away from the track, Kelly is an ambassador for Make-A-Wish Foundation; disability service provider, St Laurence and has joined forces with Aussie Bodies to help promote good health for all Australians. Kelly handled the pressure of expectation well, claiming Gold and Silver medals in the London 2012 Paralympic Games and now has her eyes firmly set on Rio in 2016. Jeremy Meltzer As a social entrepreneur, Jeremy often travelled to Latin America while building his business. There, he became increasingly disturbed by the realities he saw facing women and girls, how violence was so ‘normalised’ and simply accepted as ‘what men do’. Jeremy knew this paradigm to be deeply flawed. Since then, to understand what can possibly be done, Jeremy has travelled the world meeting with charities that work to empower women and girls. He’s sat with tribal leaders in Burmese refugee camps, and heard the gut-wrenching stories from girls sold to brothels in Mumbai. From the jungles in Borneo to the boardrooms of New York, he’s met with some of the most disempowered and powerful people on the planet, who work on this issue. This has inspired iEqualChange, a social enterprise that offers a value-driven cause-marketing solution for business and fundraising platform for charities. Jeremy speaks passionately about the social and business case for men to become the solution, the new win-win scenario, and opportunity for business to become a powerful ‘force for good’. Moira Kelly AO Moira decided at a young age that she wanted to help the disadvantaged children of this world. Upon leaving Australia for India she worked at Mother Theresa’s orphanage in Calcutta. Her humanitarian work continued in Botswana, Johannesburg, New York, Bosnia and Albania. Moira volunteered in soup kitchens, refugee camps, dental clinics and schools. She acted as coordinator of volunteers in an HIV/AIDS hospital in Romania. During the war in Bosnia, Moira began seeking overseas medical support for children who had been injured through conflict. The need for such care grew and in 1999 the Children First Foundation was established to support and expand this work. Moira has received a number of national and international awards, including the Order of Australia in 2001 and she was named Victorian of the Year in 2003 and 2012. In 1998 Moira adopted Ahmed and Emmanuel in an orphanage in Iraq. In partnership with Children First, she brought them to Australia where they remained in her care throughout their childhood. Moira shares guardianship of formerly conjoined twins Trishna and Krishna with Bangladeshi Australian, Atom Rahman. In 2012 Moira assumed the role of a Principal Ambassador of Children First and continues as a Director. Tom Harley The Geelong Cats’ dual-flag winning skipper, Tom Harley retired in 2009 leaving behind one of the best captaincy records in AFL history. Harley’s leadership skills were consistently praised during his time and he established himself as one of the most respected leaders in AFL. On retirement, Harley joined the Seven Network as a commentator filling the much-coveted seat on Friday Night Football and making regular appearances during games and on talk show AFL Game Day. He is also a very proud ambassador at Swisse Wellness. In 2010, Harley took up a year-long role as Project Consultant to the Greater Western Sydney Football Club while working with the AIS/AFL Academy as an Assistant Coach and Mentor. In September 2010, Harley released, through Penguin Books Australia, Standing Tall - a book on confidence, teamwork and leadership that he penned himself. In 2011, he was appointed Planning & Operations Manager of AFL NSW/ACT and Coach of the NSW/ACT Under 16 team and AIS/AFL Academy Mentor. In June 2011, Harley was promoted to General Manager - AFL NSW/ACT; the most senior AFL appointed role in NSW/ACT.
