elcome to Easter Sunday 2014!
As an Easter people, each of us lives in the wake of
the Resurrection of Jesus Christ. World history has been
impacted by this event. Nations and cultures have been
infused with the sentiments of this event. Our own family
trees have been touched and forever enlivened by the
mystery of the Resurrection. Our presence here in church
today gives witness to the deepest hope of the human
heart: hope in life eternal. It is in Christ that the glory of
the Resurrection has been revealed. It is through Him that
our hope of eternity dawns. The good news of Easter is
that sin and death no longer have the final word. Christ is
victorious and invites us to share in his victory. Praise His
holy name!
Some may make the mistake of saying that Jesus WAS
raised from the dead. The Church, however, has
consistently believed and taught that Jesus IS RISEN from
the dead. Jesus Christ is not just a figure from the
historical past, but He is a present reality, inviting a
personal, active, lived relationship with Him in the here
and now. All of us are invited. A new day has arrived. Will
you welcome Easter faith?
At the Easter Vigil, He became especially real and
personal to the catechumens who have now begun their
new life of grace in the waters of Baptism. Far from a
part-time, mere annual commemoration, the new
neophytes deeply know that Jesus Christ IS present to
them, and is always present to us in the sacramental life of
the Church. When our faith is deep and sincere, we not
only proclaim the Risen Christ with our lips on this day,
but we endeavor by grace to proclaim Him by our way of
living the whole year through. This is what most
powerfully speaks to a waiting world. The newly baptized
now have lives that are marked and their hearts now set on
higher realms. Easter renews that in all of us as well. Their
walk with the Risen One (and OUR walk with Him) is a
year round, day in and day out experience. Anything less
cheapens the dignity of this, the centerpiece of Christian
faith, and of our Catholic life in Him, which is Easter.
Although Lent has been long, we are now able again to
rejoice and say that Jesus IS risen. He IS risen, indeed!
Here at the Church of the Little Flower, it is our honor
to follow Christ, our Light. He shines meaning, hope, and
promise upon His faithful followers. We annually look
forward to this stupendous day, and we do our best to
always live in the wake of Easter morn. What was dead
shall live. What was dark shall be illumined. What was
forgotten shall be remembered. What was fallen shall be
raised up. In the power of the Resurrection we strive again
to be counted among the members of His flock, and we
invite others to discover that grace too. What would we
not do or give for Him who has given us so much?
May we all have a renewed Easter faith. May our lips
proclaim Him. May our lives give witness to Him. And may
our hearts rejoice in Him forever! Alleluia!!

When Christ your life appears,

“W
WHAT DO YOU KNOW?
hat do you know?” is the question
linking all three readings today. Imagine
the shock waves that shot through the city of
Jerusalem that first Easter morning. Jesus’ body was
missing! By the time Peter spoke the words found
in today’s first reading, fifty days had passed, so he
began by saying, in effect, “I take it you know what
has been reported all over Judea about Jesus of
Nazareth.” Of course they knew by then, but in
today’s Gospel we are taken back to the first day.
We meet Mary Magdalene exclaiming, “We don’t
know where they put him!”
What do we know? In the second reading Paul
asks, “Do you not know that a little yeast leavens all
the dough?” Do we know the power of our own
faith? Do we know the effect we can have on
others?

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
he Lenten journey is now complete, its
mission of renewal and preparation to receive
new life fulfilled. The call to worship the Risen Lord
has been received, and we gather to experience
together the consoling presence of Christ in word
and sacrament. We are at our best today, crowded
and cramped to be sure, but the fullest sign of who
were are meant to be. Christ has claimed us in the
waters of baptism, we have acquired wonderful
companions, and together we can accomplish great
things.
This is the day for rekindling the old flames of
baptismal commitment, so we light the paschal
candle, and by its light we make yet again the
ancient promises to reject evil’s grip and empty
promises. Today we do not recite the Creed, but
respond with one voice to age-old questions. New
life has to be nurtured, both the life of the newly
baptized and the renewed life of those who have
passed through Lent’s refining prayer, fasting, and
giving alms. At any Mass during the next fifty days,
you may be surprised by grace and splashed by
water!

“Dirty Rats”
April is Child Abuse Prevention Month. Each week we will offer snipets from Virtus
bulletins shared in the last year. Virtus training is a child sex abuse awareness and
prevention program that begins with a live training session and continues with monthly
bulletins.
“Ratters” are people who use Remote Access Tools (RATs) or “malware” to take over
people’s computers and spy on them through the victim’s webcams or built in cameras.
Malware stands for “malicious software,” which is a program designed to infiltrate
computers, tablets, or smartphones for a variety of purposes and without the users consent.
As technology continues to change rapidly, all of us charged with protecting children
must continue to stay abreast of the new programs and applications that may be used by
predators to manipulate and exploit children.

Abril es el Mes Nacional para la Prevención del Abuso Infantil. Cada semana ofreceremos
una cápsula de los boletines de Virtus compartidos en el pasado año. El entrenamiento de
Virtus es un programa de conciencia y prevención del abuso infantil que comienza con una
presentación en vivo y continúa con boletines mensuales.
Los “ratoneros” son personas que utilizan las herramientas de acceso remoto (RATs) o
“malware” para apropiarse de las computadoras y espiar a las personas a través de las cámaras
web o cámaras incorporadas. El “malware” es un programa de código malicioso diseñado para

SHRINE TO SAINT THERESE
In anticipation of the 90th anniversary of the parish and
school, a new outdoor, illuminated, shrine dedicated to Saint
Therese of Lissieux, France is being planned to be built near
the main entrance of the parish office. The construction of a
grotto, kneelers and benches, a memorial brick patio, a lifesize statue of Saint Therese, and the planting of beautiful
landscaping will soon be in the offing, conveniently situated
under the big shade tree. Memorializations are being accepted for all component parts of this project, including the sponsorship of the statue of Saint Therese. Information on the memorial bricks will be available as we approach summer.

OUR 90TH ANNIVERSARY!!!
Next year a series of important anniversaries will take place
here at the Church of the Little Flower. In the Fall of 2015,
for example, Saint Theresa School will commence its 90th
academic year. In April of 2016, the Parish will celebrate the
90th anniversary of its founding, and on December 8, 2016, the
original church (now Comber Hall) will celebrate the 90th
anniversary of its dedication. All our buildings have since been declared historical
sites, and such an anniversary gives us great cause for celebration. Many special
events and festive occasions are being planned to help us, as community, celebrate
this milestone. Great things are soon to come. Don’t miss out! You are part of one
of the oldest and most historical Catholic churches in all of South Florida. May our
parish family continue to grow!

“WHY CATHOLIC?
¿POR QUÉ SER CATÓLICO?
A nation-wide program of adult
faith formation entitled, “Why Be
Catholic?,” is soon to be activated here at the
Church of the Little Flower. It will include three
components: 1.) the use of a meaningful
curriculum applied in each of our ministry
groups at the parish; 2.) the formation of a new
“large-group” ministry, entitled, “Why be
Catholic?,” which presents a model for faith
development; and finally 3.) the formation of
small groups of parishioners, who study and
pray over Catholic doctrine, as they seek faith
enrichment. For more information, contact

CONFESSIONAL RENOVATIONS
We will soon be underway with
the renovation of three of our
confessionals, which we use in the
Sacrament
of
Reconciliation.
It will be an effort in making them
more comfortable, private, and
user-friendly,
easing
access
with new flooring and signage,
enhancing furnishing, and including climate
control and lighting. Each confessional will cost
$18,000. To date, donations which address one
of the confessionals has been received. Thanks
to those who have given toward this cause.

DEVOTIONAL LIGHTS
At the base of all the
statues in our church are
our beautiful devotional
lights. Meant to lift our
minds and hearts to seek
heavenly assistance with our prayers, Catholic
devotion to the Sacred Heart, the Blessed
Mother, Saint Joseph, and the Saints is a
long-held tradition which fosters reverence
and cultivates faith and hope. As you select the
button of your choice, a light will illumine that
represents your prayer intention. Thank you
for your offerings for this service which serve
as tokens of your love and appreciation.

REPORT ON FATHER O'SULLIVAN
Father Sean O'Sullivan has informed us of his hope
to return to the parish on April 21st to resume life at
the Little Flower rectory. After a long period of
recuperation, he very much wishes to be at the
service of the parish community, which he loves so
much. Although his fragile health will prevent him
from presiding and preaching at public Masses,
and he no longer is able to drive, he wants to
nonetheless be available to meet with parishioners,
offer counsel and spiritual direction, and hear
confessions each weekday at the parish office. We
look forward to welcoming him back. Just call
ahead to be sure to let him know that you are
coming by for a visit. He'll be happy to welcome
you and meet with you.
OUTDOOR CANDLELIGHT ROSARY
IN MAY
Since May is a Marian month,
we will again have an outdoor
candlelight rosary ceremony on
the lawn surrounding the grotto
of the rectory-house yard on
Monday, May 5th, at 8:00pm.
It will be a beautiful way to
express our filial affection for
the Blessed Mother, as we pray
the rosary in five different
languages (English, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese,
and Latin). The 25-minute ceremony will be
followed by a light reception under the rectory
carport. All are welcome.
INFORMATION BOOTH:
A GREAT SUCCESS IN
HOSPITALITY AND CONVENIENCE
It’s as if the office has
been brought to the front
door of church. Mark Landia,
our
new
Director
of
Communications
and
Protocol, will be staffing the
information booth every
weekend near the main entrance of church, to be of
assistance to the community in manifold ways.
Parish registration, baptismal and wedding forms
and information, pilgrimage brochures, car magnets,
and ministry information are now readily accessible
at the front door. Even if questions are asked that
cannot be answered, names and phone numbers will
be taken, and return calls will be made with answers
and assistance. It’s another success story of
hospitality and service at the Church of the Little
Flower.
Our quarterly Healing Mass for
the infirmed, the weak, the aged,
and those facing surgery is
scheduled for Tuesday, May 20th
at 7:00pm. Multiple priests will
be present to bestow the
Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick. Please mark
your calendars and join us!
MEN’S EMMAUS RETREAT
The Men’s Emmaus Community of
the Church of the Little Flower
invites you for a weekend of
spiritual exercises and reflection.
The Retreat will be held at the
Miami Youth Center Retreat House on May 16, 17
& 18, 2014. The retreat begins at 6:00pm sharp on
Friday and ends by 3:30pm on Sunday.

Guadalupe to explain the Church's teachings
about Mary as the Mother of God, the
Immaculate Conception and the dogma of the

“¿QUÉ LES PARECE?”
ué les parece?” es la pregunta que une a las
tres lecturas de hoy. Imagínense el choque
que estremeció a Jerusalén esta primera mañana de
Pascua. ¡El cuerpo de Jesús no estaba! Cuando
Pedro pronunció las palabras de la primera lectura
de hoy, habían pasado cincuenta días y por eso
empezó diciendo: “Ustedes saben lo sucedido en
toda Judea sobre Jesús de Nazaret . . .” Por supuesto
sabían lo ocurrido, pero en el Evangelio de hoy nos
transportamos al primer día. Nos encontramos con
María Magdalena exclamando: “¡No sabemos dónde
lo han puesto!”
¿Qué sabemos nosotros? En la segunda lectura
Pablo pregunta: “¿No saben que basta un poco de
levadura para transformar toda la masa?”
¿Conocemos el poder de nuestra propia fe?
¿Sabemos el efecto que tenemos en los demás?

TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE
ace 3,000 años los chinos pintaban huevos de pato
para celebrar la primavera. Los egipcios pintaban
huevos en honor de la diosa Ishtar, mientras ingleses y
alemanes lo hacían para celebrar al sol. Eventualmente
la práctica continuó en honor de la resurrección de
Cristo.
La costumbre de esconder huevos hervidos y
pintados ha tomado nueva vida entre los
mexicamericanos. Cada Cuaresma mi mamá solía
guardar los cascarones de los huevos que nos comíamos.
Recuerdo con alegría la costumbre de colorear los
cascarones el Sábado de Gloria para que la coneja nos
los escondiera para la Pascua. Al día siguiente, después
de Misa nos reuníamos a buscar cascarones y romperlos
sobre la cabeza de quien se arrimara, para bañarlos con
el confeti multicolor.
La costumbre de celebrar la Pascua con cascarones
decorados es una bella tradición. Esta costumbre
muestra que todas las naciones pueden agregar a la
Iglesia cristiana tradiciones propias de su cultura, ya que
Jesucristo dio su vida por todas ellas. Es justo celebrar la
Resurrección del autor de la vida con símbolos de
fecundidad y todos los colores del gozo.
