Good Shepherd Catholic Parish St. Mary ’s, H oly Fa mily, St. Th omas th e Apostle & St. Charle s Borromeo March 6. 2016 BETHLEHEM CENTER: A MISSION OF MERCY For 40 days this Lent we are all working to come closer to Jesus through increased prayer, fasting and abstaining. By allowing ourselves to suffer, we hope to better understand and accept Jesus’ love for us all. We are also called in this Year of Mercy to act on the Corporal Works of Mercy. Among them are to Feed the Hungry, Give Drink to the Thirsty and Clothe the Naked. The Bethlehem Center is our Parish’s mission of mercy. We ask that as you subject yourself to the fasting and abstaining of Lent for 40 days to perhaps take the opportunity to examine what it must feel like for those who fast and abstain for 365 years out of the year. For some people in our community, this is not a choice, but rather a way of life. We have neighbors who go to bed hungry, who are unable to clothe their children and some who have no place to call home. The Bethlehem Center offers our parishioners the opportunity to further build their relationship with Jesus by working as he would for those suffering in our community. The center offers volunteer opportunities in the kitchen, dining hall, thrift store, food pantry and more seven days a week. You have the chance to volunteer for as little as two hours and it will indeed be a blessing to guests of the Bethlehem Center. The Center is also always in need of donations. Currently, the center is collecting baskets and small items to create Easter Baskets for children whose families cannot afford the luxury this Easter. Men’s clothing is also in short supply. The center accepts used clothing to distribute to the homeless and low income families. Denim and other durable material are greatly appreciated. Lastly, the center dining hall is open daily to those in need of a hot meal. Monetary donations keep this service going for just $1.67/meal. In fact, a generous donation of $25.05 provides 15 hot meals at the Bethlehem Center! We have worked to make donating to the center simpler through our website at www.bethcenter.org. If you would like to schedule a time to volunteer at the Bethlehem Center or drop off donations, call the Center at 734-1572 or stop by at 1638 N. Dinuba Blvd, Visalia 93291. “Give generously to them and do so without a grudging heart; then because of this the Lord your God will bless you in all your work and in everything you put your hand to.” Welcome! We would like to extend a warm welcome to all visitors, families and friends of our community! We hope the information in this weeks bulletin is a helpful resource. Please use the registration form on this page if you are interested in becoming a registered parishioner. Just fill it out and drop it in the collection basket. It’s that easy! Thank you for choosing to visit Good Shepherd Catholic Parish (formerly The Catholic Church of Visalia). CONTACT INFORMATION PRIESTS IN RESIDENCE Fr. Eric Swearingen, Pastor Rev. Fourth Sunday of Lent: March 6, 2016 “We must rejoice when our brother who was dead in sin repents and comes back to life,” -Luke 15:1-3, 11-32 Reflection REPENTANCE “We implore you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God.” So says Paul in the Second Letter to the Corinthians. Isn’t this what Lent is all about? We know that we are sinners, yet we don’t think about it much. Lent is the time to think about all the ways in which we have failed to be all that we hope to be as followers of Christ. Like the prodigal son in the Gospel, we accept the gifts that God gives but forget the goodness of the giver. We waste our gifts on useless works and useless things. We can’t wait to get to the stores on “Black Friday.” We collect useless junk for our homes, our cars, and our children; things that don’t contribute to our good character, but only to our cluttered lives. We obsess over our phones, our computers, and our i-thingies at the expense of our face-to-face relationships. FORGIVENESS “So he got up and went back to his father. While he was still a long way off, his father caught sight of him, and was filled with compassion. He ran to his son, embraced him and kissed him.” To have seen his son a long way off, the father must have been looking for him, watching every day, hoping for his return. The father was ready to forgive, love, and receive back the son who wandered and squandered. And so our God is with us. God’s faithful love and compassion is always ready to forgive us, if only we would turn back to the right way again. As Saint Paul says, “God was reconciling the world to [God] in Christ, not counting their trespasses against them and entrusting to us the message of reconciliation.” In turn, we are to welcome others into this new freedom and joy. “So we are ambassadors for Christ, as if God were appealing through us.” Today’s Readings: Jos 5:9a, 10–12; Ps 34:2–3, 4–5, 6–7; 2 Cor 5:17–21; Lk 15:1–3, 11–32 2ND COLLECTION THIS WEEKEND FOR INTERNATIONAL NEEDS This weekend, the annual collection for International Needs will be taken up in parishes throughout the U.S. Proceeds benefit the Church in Latin America and Bishop’s Relief. This year we celebrate the important milestone of 50 years of solidarity with the Church in Latin America and the Caribbean. The Church there faces many challenges, including lack of access to resources the faithful need to nourish their spiritual lives. Often, there are too few priests to meet the needs of the many communities they serve, or the communities themselves are simply too isolated to have access to other important resources for the faith. Strategies to train and support evangelization leaders are vital to reach those who are disconnected from the life and mission of the Church. For the past 50 years, through the Collection for the Church in Latin America (CLA), you have helped the Church in 25 countries in Central and South America as well as the Caribbean to address challenges to the faith. Only with your committed support can we continue help develop evangelization and catechetical programs and fund activities that promote an encounter with Jesus Christ, so that the faithful can become missionary disciples. Your renewed support funds several ministries and projects that ensure the people in Latin America and the Caribbean can share their faith and strengthen connections with members of the church community. Each time we encounter a suffering person, we encounter Jesus in disguise. The Catholic Relief Services Collection (CRSC) or Bishop’s Relief, funds six Catholic agencies that serve the disguised Jesus in our suffering brothers and sisters around the world. His disguise might be that of those suffering from natural disaster, those displaced by violence or war, or those migrants searching for a better life. Your support of this collection is an opportunity to help Jesus in disguise. With your donations, you feed Jesus’ hunger in suffering refugees… through the USCCB Department of Migration and Refugee Services (MRS). You give water to quench Jesus’ thirst in the people of Bolivia and Ethiopia . . . through the humanitarian work of Catholic Relief Services (CRS). Offer legal assistance to Jesus in struggling immigrants . . . through the Catholic Legal Immigration Network, Inc. CLINIC). Reach out to comfort Jesus’ loneliness in isolated workers . . . through the pastoral work of the USCCB Secretariat of Cultural Diversity in the Church. Advocate on behalf of Jesus in the poor and abandoned . . . through the public policy work of the USCCB Department of Justice, Peace and Human Development. Send aid to Jesus in the victims of natural disasters . . . through the Holy Father’s Relief Fund. As a child, Mike had dreams of becoming a pharmacist just like his dad. Mike took one year off from pharmacy studies to discern a potential calling to the priesthood at the Redemptorist seminary in St. Louis, MO. He returned and graduated from pharmacy school in 1991 and joined his father; working side-by-side with his hero, mentor and friend at their family-owned pharmacy. After nearly five years of working in the pharmacy with his father, Mike was surprised to find out from a friend that birth control pills could act as abortifacients. After much scientific research, prayer and studying the Catholic Church's stance on the evils of contraception, Mike decided to approach his father with this information to see if his dad would agree to stop selling contraceptives. The response Mike received from his father was a disappointing "no". But that is only the beginning to his amazing story, and one that would catch national attention and shake the country. Hear this account of one man's triumph over the pressures of the world, being thrust into an international spotlight, his discovery of the unconditional love between him and his father, and the grace that helped him stand up for what was right, no matter the cost, by eventually stopping the sale of all contraceptives in his third-generation familyowned pharmacy. Listen as Mike encourages others to make right choices when they are faced with challenges in their own careers and personal lives; challenging them to become the person God is calling them to be, no matter the cost. Mike lives in Grand Rapids, Michigan with his wife and nine children. Please plan to join us on Thursday, March 10. Everyone is welcome. Catholic Schools in California - A Stellar Past - A Robust Future “The Mission of the Catholic school is the integral formation of students, so that they may be true to their condition as Christ’s disciples and as such work effectively for the evangelization of culture and for the common good of society.” - St. John Paul II The ministry of Catholic schools is not solely a parochial concern but a concern and a ministry of the entire diocese. The responsibility for maintaining, fostering and developing our Catholic schools does not belong solely to the local parish that has a school, nor to pastors of parishes with schools, nor to Catholic parents with school-aged children. Rather, this responsibility belongs to every parish, whether having a school or not, to every priest, whether a pastor with a school or not, and to every Catholic whether or not they have school-aged children or not. Because the character or our children is one of the core concerns of our Catholic schools, the responsibility for forming future Catholic leaders belongs to all Catholics. Concerned about the environment of much of public education, the shifting standards of society, and inadequate moral and values instruction in public schools, many Catholic families make significant sacrifices to enroll their children in a Catholic school. They appreciate, in particular, the commonality of values, the faith-inspired environment, the community atmosphere, the supportive individual attention accorded their children, and the collaborative relationship between parents and teachers that the Catholic school provides. In addition, there is a genuine concern among a growing number of families about passing on the faith to their children. New research from The Center for Applied Research in the Apostolate (CARA) looks at the millennial generation (born in 1982 or later) of baptized Catholics, and finds that 24% reported having no religious education of any kind and 44% having sacramental preparation only. Statistically, those who never attended a Catholic school are more likely to leave the Church after becoming an adult, even if they attended Mass regularly with their families during their formative years. By contrast, religious commitment during childhood and the teenage years, if reinforced by attending a Catholic school, is directly correlated to remaining lifelong members of the Church (CARA, 2014). Of those who never attended a Catholic school, only 5% continued to attend Mass on a regular basis after reaching maturity, compared to 34% of those who attended a Catholic elementary school and 39% who attended a Catholic high school. Of this same group, 66% of those who never attended a Catholic school received the sacrament of Confirmation, compared to 82% of those who attended a Catholic elementary school and 91% of those who attended a Catholic high school.
