Second Sunday of Advent
Jubilee Year of Mercy
Jubilee Year of Mercy
Pope Francis has declared an extraordinary jubilee Year of
Mercy to begin this week on December 8, 2015, the Solemnity
of the Immaculate Concep on. The Holy Father has
proclaimed this holy year in order to express more clearly the
Church's mission “to be a witness of mercy."
This Tuesday, the Solemnity of the
Immaculate Concep on, Pope Francis will
open the “Holy Door” in Saint Peter’s
Basilica, symbolically opening the Jubilee Year of Mercy. In today’s scriptures,
Baruch confidently an cipates God’s
healing of the brokenness of humanity,
and Paul sees God bringing our
discernment, knowledge, and love to
fulfillment. Our experience of life and of
ourselves can make such prophecies
seem wildly op mis c, even hopelessly
naïve. Pope Francis challenges us to live
this Jubilee Year as a graced me, when
God’s mercy reawakens our enthusiasm
to live our bap smal call as gospel people,
our hope renewed and ourselves
recommi ed to selfless charity. No ce
that in Luke’s Gospel today, God bypasses
the religious elite and poli cally powerful
to speak to a humble believer in the
barren desert the saving word that will
transform history. So God’s mercy
con nues to accomplish humanity’s
salva on in and through ordinary, flawed,
and least likely instruments—even us.

A jubilee year is a holy year marked by acts of faith, charity,
and communion. It has its roots in Mosaic law when every
fi ieth year was made holy for the Jewish people. Debts were
canceled, slaves were freed, and lands were restored to their original owners. Ordinary
jubilees occur every 25 or 50 years, and extraordinary jubilees are called for a momentous
occasion.
The scriptural focus for the Year of Mercy is Christ's command from Luke 6:36, “Be
merciful, just as your Father is merciful.” One way that Catholics can partake in this holy
year is by performing the Corporal and Spiritual Works of Mercy.

St. Norbert will be commemora ng the jubilee year by displaying a Cross of Mercy. Each
month we will add a Corporal Work of Mercy to the cross, invi ng each of us to be a
witness of God’s mercy through that prac ce. The focus for the month of December is to
Feed the Hungry. Next week’s bulle n will offer prac cal ways to do this locally.
The jubilee Year of Mercy will end on the Solemnity of Christ the King, Nov. 20, 2016.

Referendum Petition to Reverse Doctor Assisted Suicide
Please stop and sign the pe on referendum a er Mass today. The goal is to get enough
signatures to have California voters vote on a referendum next year to reverse the doctor
assisted suicide law. The following are some reasons to oppose the new law.
What's wrong with legalizing physician‐assisted suicide?  It makes doctors into killers, destroying the medical ethic of “Do no harm.”
 It victimizes the disabled, elderly, and chronically ill by providing poison instead of care.
 It ex nguishes what can be a person’s most meaningful days at the end of life.
 It defies protec ng human life, which is the founda on of legi mate government.
 It has no real safeguard against abuse.
 It is the path to euthanasia as seen in Nazi Germany, the Netherlands, and Belgium.
 It defies the commandment “You shall not kill,” which includes taking one's own life.

Weekly Parish Offering
Thank you for your continuing support of St. Norbert Parish. For the fiscal year July 1, 2015,
to June 30, 2016, our parish budget calls for $26,850 to be donated weekly at the Sunday
collection. The collection for Sunday, November 22, was $24,674.25. The collection on
Thanksgiving Day for Chris an Service was $2,696.31. The collec on for Sunday,
November 29, was $24,998.95. These collections are not only for operating expenses each
week, but also for any ongoing repair work, upgrades, etc. to our parish facility. Your regular

This Thursday, December 10, we will discus the Immaculate
Concep on and the story of Our Lady of Guadalupe. The following
week our topic will be the Incarna on. RCIA sessions will not meet
on December 24 or 31. We will resume on January 7.
Theodosius banned all pagan rituals, which had been tolerated
though not encouraged by previous Christian emperors, dissolved the
Order of the Vestal Virgins, and permitted (though did not order) the
destruction of pagan temples. He also outlawed the ancient Greek
Olympic Games, which held its competitions with nude athletes, as it
seemed to Theodosius against Christian principals and included pagan
rituals, such as the lighting of the sacred flame at the beginning of the
games. This action of Theodosius would remain in effect for fifteen
centuries with the Olympic Games not restored to western culture
until 1896.
Anyone desiring to become a Catholic is welcome to begin the
Inquiry Process on Thursday evenings at 7:30. Inquiry sessions are
available year‐round, except for holidays, and new par cipants
are welcome at any me. Whether you have decided to become a
Catholic, wish to learn more about the Church, or just have
ques ons that you would like to discuss, we encourage you to join
us. There is no obliga on at this stage of the RCIA process, but for
those who desire to con nue to the recep on of sacraments, the
process usually takes a minimum of one year.

it holds for us as Catholic Chris ans.

What was happening in the Fourth
Century?
Following the death of Jus n the Apostate, the rule returned to
Christian Emperors who set about reversing the laws passed by Justin
which oppressed Christianity and favored paganism. The reversals
began to give superior rights to Christians, and impose more serious
penalties upon both pagans and heretical Christians (those who did
not accept the Trinitarian doctrine defined at Nicaea.)
In January of 379 Theodosius I became Emperor of the East, he would
reign for sixteen years and for the final three, beginning in 392,
Theodosius would be the sole Emperor of both East and West, and
would be the last Roman Emperor ever to rule over both the Eastern
and Western divisions of the Empire. Theodosius was a firm Nicene
Christian, and established Nicene (Trinitarian) Christianity as the
official religion of the Roman Empire. Sometimes that is attributed to
Constantine, but Constantine legalized Christianity, in fact religious
liberty for all; Theodosius made it the official religion for all in the
The declaration of Christianity as the official religion might sound like
it was a good thing for the Church, but in fact the decree eventually
led to political favoritism for Christians and persecution for those in
heretical sects or practicing paganism, even extending to Jews who
had been somewhat protected by most previous emperors. Because
of the advantage of being a Christian, many began to convert for
reasons other than sincere faith, and often without proper
instruction, and so while technically more Christians were among the
population, many of those were ignorant of Christian doctrine or
practice.
Because priests and deacons were exempt from tax on all income,
and any inheritance they might leave would go to the church, only
those of the poorest classes were encouraged to seek these
vocations. Allowing wealthier persons to enter the clergy would mean
a loss of revenue to the Emperor. If a wealthier person did pursue a
religious vocation, he was required to deed all of his assets, property
as well as money, to his closest relative, or to the government, so that
it could still be taxed. He entered the diaconate or priesthood owning
nothing. Because of the recruitment of clergy from among the very
poor, the educational level decreased substantially from the many
highly educated clergy trained in fine schools of earlier centuries.
Although, of course, there would be exceptions, this trend of a mostly
uneducated clergy would continue until 9th century and the
Carolingian Renaissance of Charlemagne when education began to
prosper and develop through the high middle ages of the 12th and
13th centuries. The requirement of philosophical and theological
education in established seminaries for candidates to the priesthood
would not be mandated by the Church until the Council of Trent in
the 15th century!
During the reign of Theodosius, barbarian tribes from the North,
Vandals, Goths, and Franks were beginning to attack the borders of
the Empire. This situation became so desperate that the co‐Emperor
in the West, Gratian, lost some of his territory to the invading armies.
Gratian himself abdicated his office, leaving Theodosius as the sole
Emperor. Theodosius waged several battles against these encroaching
warriors, often relying on mercenary warriors from other barbarian
tribes, not very successfully. It would be a long struggle, but within a
hundred years the Roman Empire would fall under the assault of the
barbarian tribes, introducing new cultures and new challenges to the
Church.
And, so, the history of the Church continues . . .

Inmaculada Concepción, y será el día en
que el Papa Francisco abra la “Puerta
Santa” en la Basílica de San Pedro,
simbólicamente abriendo el Año Jubilar de la Misericordia. En las Escritura de hoy,
Baruc confiadamente an cipa la sanación
que Dios hace de la desesperanza de la
humanidad y Pablo ve a Dios llevar a su
cumplimiento nuestro discernimiento,
conocimiento y amor. Desde nuestra
experiencia de vida y de nosotros podemos
hacer que esas profecías parezcan muy
op mistas aunque irremediablemente
ingenuas. El Papa Francisco nos desa a a
vivir este Año Jubilar como un empo de
gracia cuando la misericordia de Dios
despierte nuestro entusiasmo para vivir
nuestra llamada bau smal como personas
del Evangelio, nuestra esperanza renovada
y nosotros vueltos a comprometer a una
caridad desinteresada. Observen que en el
Evangelio de Lucas, Dios pasa de largo a los
líderes religiosos y polí cos para en su
lugar hablar en el desierto estéril con un
creyente humilde la palabra salvadora que
transformará la historia. Así que la
misericordia de Dios con nua realizando la
salvación de la humanidad en y por medio
de instrumentos ordinarios e imperfectos,

Coro de Domingos por la Noche (JPC)
Invitamos a personas que toquen guitarra, piano o deseen cantar, a
integrarse al coro para alabar y bendecir al Señor a través del canto.
Los ensayos son una vez a la semana y antes de la celebración

If you would like to order tamales for
Christmas, we will be taking orders after
Mass on this weekend and next. There is
also an order sheet in the Ministry Center.
We will have pork, chicken and sweet tamales handmade by the ladies
of Hispanic Ministry. Pre‐paid orders are only $20.00/dozen and can
be picked up after all Masses on Sunday, December 20. Orders must

81 pies were collected this Thanksgiving and
delivered to the Southwest Community Center
and the Catholic Worker to help the needy have
a joyous Thanksgiving dinner. This annual
outreach can only take place because of the

garage collec on next year, ideally someone who lives within a

For most people, the holidays are highly
an cipated days of family celebra on,
reunion, gi ‐giving and fun. Others dread the holidays or simply
endure them. For them the holidays represent loss and loneliness.
If you have recently lost a loved one or you have had losses in the
past that cause you to associate sorrow with the holiday you are
invited to: Good Grief! Here Comes Christmas! This is a simple
me of retreat and reflec on for persons who have suffered loss
and are experiencing bereavement. In addi on to reflec on,
prac cal sugges ons for how to “be” during the holiday season
will be offered. Treat yourself to a li le TLC as we move through
this busy me. Facilitated by Dr. Kathy Schinhofen. There is no
cost for the retreat.
