2009 has gotten off to a fast start!!

168 grammar school students are participating in the Alemany Amigos mentoring program for disadvantaged kids

The tutoring program at Guardian Angel School continues
to help struggling students and provides our Alemany students to be role models for the Guardian Angel children.
♦ Over 1,100 food items were collected for the Casa
Esperanza food bank. Many of the Casa Esperanza clients
have lost jobs and the need for food is great.

Freshmen Debaters Step It
Up In Berkley
The Bishop Alemany Debate
team travelled to San Francisco
over the President's Day weekend to compete in the CalDebate Invitational Tournament
at UC Berkeley. The tournament is the biggest debate event of
the year and draws the best teams from throughout the country.
The team suffered a major setback when the veteran senior team
of Julia Walther and Melanie DeGuzman was sidelined due to
illness. DeGuzman developed laryngitis and couldn't speak." No
worries, leave it to us" said the freshman team of Pascual Varni
and Mark Walther as they stepped up and carried the Alemany
banner into battle. The Varni/Walther team was the most successful of the Alemany duos as they were able to advance to third
level of rounds. Also delivering an all-star performance was
sophomore Bianca Walters. The travelling team consisted of Julia
Walther, Melanie DeGuzman, Bobby Littrel, Brendan Varni, Adriana Estrada, Aton Jemiolo, Pascual Varni, Mark Walther and
Bianca Walters. In additional to competing , the team was able do
some sightseeing and visited Fisherman's Wharf, the Golden
Gate Bridge, Haight-Ashbury, China-town and Solvang.
Speech Warriors Sweep Tournament
Congratulations to the Speech team for their victorious showing
on February 19 at the 72d Annual Lion's club Student Speaker
Contest. The team swept the event taking first, second and third
places. The winners were Melanie DeGuzman, Pascual Varni and
Mark Walther. All three were awarded cash prizes. Melanie DeGuzman will advance to the regional contest where total cash
prizes are in the thousands. Go Word Warriors!

moms...bring your sisters, brothers, aunts, uncles, cousins...it
is going to be a party!
There will be drinks and snacks served. White's studio will be
here to take a family picture. We will playing games and
dancing the night away! So bring your sombreros and come
join us at the party. See you in the Alemany Dining Hall on
March 21st!
Tickets will be on sale online and at school the week before
the event...tickets are $20 per couple and $5 for each additional guest.

locks of love
The students of Bishop Alemany High School held a pony tail drive on November 24th, 2008. The event was organized by student,
Veronica de la Cerda, and teacher, Julie Schadek. We were able to get 62 girls, 1 boy, 1 coach, and 1 teacher to donate 64 total
pony tails. The pony tails totaled more than 700 inches of hair. If the pony tail was longer than 10 inches, it was donated to Locks of
Love. If it was between 8 and 10 inches it was donated to Pantene Beautiful Lengths.
We had 8 volunteer stylists from local salons come to cut hair. Each student was called to the dining hall for their appointment. Once
they arrived they met with a stylist and discussed how much hair they wanted to cut. Their hair was pulled into a ponytail and
cut. They stylist then gave the student a hair cut that they could proudly wear back to class.
There was such a "buzz" around the school on the day of the event. Many students are talking about next year and have already
committed to growing out their hair. Next year's event will be scheduled shortly after the Homecoming dance in the fall.
Thanks to all the volunteer stylists and thanks to all the students who cut their hair for this great cause!
Alemany Drama Department Presents: “Thoroughly Modern Millie”
“Thoroughly Modern Millie”, is a Tony Award winning musical, based on the 1967 film of the same
name. It tells the story of a small-town girl, Millie Dillmount, who comes to New York City to marry
for money instead of love – a thoroughly modern aim in 1922, when women were just entering the
workforce. Millie soon begins to take delight in the flapper lifestyle, but problems arise when she
checks into a hotel owned by the leader of a kidnapping ring in China and they try to capture her!
The gala Alemany opening night is April 24th, with additional performances April 25, 26, 30, and
May 1,2,3. All evening performances, curtain at 7:30 and the Sunday matinees, (April 26 and May
3), curtain at 2pm.
Tickets are $15.00 for adults, $7.50 for Senior Citizens, Children under 12 and Students from
other schools, with ID. Alemany students are Free!

Alemany Alumnus Earns THREE World Records!!!
Kevin Meskew (Class of '74) holds the Squat and Deadlift AMERICAN and WORLD RECORDS in
his age group and weight class.
He won the 2007 USPF National Masters Powerlifting Championships 50+ 123 lb class, and set a
new American age group and weight class Record in the Deadlift with 387 lbs.
Later that year in Torreon, Mexico, Kevin competed in the WPF World Masters Powerlifting Championships. He was fortunate to win his first World Masters 50+ title, narrowly over lifters from Germany, France, Mexico,
England, and Holland, Squatting 303 lbs, Benchpressing 176 lbs, and
Deadlifting 391 lbs, at 121 lbs body weight and 51 years of age.

SUMMER SCHOOL REGULATIONS - 2009
All classes will meet four days a week for six weeks with the exception of the Readak class
and SAT Preparation.
All classes will be in session from June 17 through July 28, 2009 unless noted otherwise.
REGISTRATION: Early registration will take place in May in the Counseling Center during nutrition and lunch. You may
mail the registration form and payment to Summer School Office until June 2nd at 11111 North Alemany Drive, Mission
Hills, CA, 91345. Final regular Registration will take place on Monday, June 15th, 2009, and Tuesday, June 16th, 2009
from 8:00 a.m. to 12 p.m. on the West Campus. Tuition for summer school must be paid in full by this date. Students
must present a SUMMER SCHOOL AGREEMENT form signed by a parent and the student when registering. N.B.:
This form must be read well before signing. Keep the book copy of the contract for your records.
NON-ALEMANY students must have an additional form filled out by their home school. This form can be found on line
at www.alemany.org. In addition, non-Alemany students will be charged a $75 non-refundable registration fee.
LATE REGISTRATION: Students may register late Wednesday, June 17th from 9:00 am to Noon. A late registration fee
of $15.00 may be charged.
Parents need not accompany students for registration. Those wishing to avoid waiting in long lines on the last day may
register by mail. Those who register by mail do not have to come on registration day. They merely report to their class
on the first day of summer school. No mail registrations will be accepted if postmarked after June 2nd .
TUITION: Tuition for a ½-unit (0.5) course is $200. Developmental/Reading and Study Skills class are TBD. SAT Prep is
$240. Checks should be made out to Alemany Summer School. Please put SS and student name in the memo area of
your check.
WITHDRAWAL POLICY: A full refund will be given if Bishop Alemany High School must cancel class due to nonsufficient enrollment or other staffing issues. Since the annual summer school budget, the hiring of teachers and staff,
and the purchase of supplies are based upon the numbers of students attending summer school, if a student withdraws
for any reason, any tuition or fees will be forfeit and not refunded.
ATTENDANCE: Students who are absent more than three (3) days from any class will not be considered as having
fulfilled their summer school requirement. Every three (3) tardies to the same class will be treated as a day’s absence
from that class. THERE ARE NO EXCUSED ABSENCES FOR SUMMER CLASSES.
FOR THOSE WHO REGISTER EARLY, SCHEDULES WILL BE MAILED THE WEEK PRIOR TO THE BEGINNING OF
SUMMER SCHOOL. IF YOU DO NOT RECEIVE YOUR SCHEDULE BY MAIL, IT WILL BE AVAILABLE IN THE SUMMER SCHOOL OFFICE ON THE FIRST DAY OF SUMMER SESSION.
REQUEST FOR SPECIFIC CLASS TIME: Must be submitted in writing by June 2nd. Every effort will be made to honor
such requests whenever possible. No refunds will be given for students who withdraw because of class scheduling.
IMPORTANT: Any course failed during this present semester must also be made up this summer. However, school policy requires any student who accumulates three (3) or more failing grades during the same school year to withdraw from
Alemany.
FINAL EXAMS:
All final exams will be given on July 28, 2009. There will be no exceptions.

Parent Association Updates
Post Prom Party
Will take place on Thursday, May 21, from 11pm until 5am. Yes, this in an all night party sponsored by the Parent Association, to keep our Juniors and Seniors in a safe, alcohol and drug free party, to celebrate their success with friends
after prom. The students and prom guests enjoy a fun night of casino, inflatables, making music videos, live bands,
food, raffles and much more.
We need all parents of Freshman, Sophomores, Juniors and Seniors to help keep the 13 year tradition going for
when your student becomes a Junior or Senior. If they aren’t one already. We need your help decorating prior to Post
Prom, the day of and during the evening. Parent Service hours can be earned by helping. We are also in need of donations of prizes to give away such as food certificates, movie tickets, amusement parks, sport events, gas cards, sporting
goods, and items that teenagers would like to win. We are also looking for inflatable chairs, bean bags to use for the

Casino Night Thank You’s
The Parent Association would like to thank all of you who supported this years Casino Night that was held in Alumni Hall
on Sat. Feb. 21. We would also like to thank all the Volunteers who helped organize and worked to make the night a
success. Our Special Thanks goes out to our two Casino Night Chairs, Angela Vitalis and Kathleen Fritz for their dedication. Proceeds from this night will go towards Post Prom for a safe, fun filled night for students after Prom. We will
have a more details in the next Alemanian.
Teacher and Staff Appreciation Luncheon
The Parent Association celebrated our Annual Teacher and Staff Appreciation Luncheon, to say Thank You for all their
dedication to our students, in association with Catholic School Week on Wed. Feb. 4. Our theme was “Our All American
Stars, You are the Stars our Students Can Look Up To…”. The faculty enjoyed music by our string quartet, food by
Macaroni Grill, desserts by local restaurants and were served by our volunteer parents. We thank our Luncheon Committee for a wonderful lunch to celebrate our Teachers and Staff.
Attention Parents and Friends: Come “Donate Blood and Save a Life”
The Parent Association will be sponsoring a BLOOD DRIVE on Tuesday, April 28 from 3pm until 8pm in Alumni Hall.
Most people don’t realize that blood is very expensive medical product, sometimes over $300 a pint. We have partnered
up with Providence Holy Cross to sponsor this day. We have blood drives every year on campus for our seniors to donate to help others in need. Now, it is time for the PARENTS to help what we have educated our students in, to give to
others in need. This will also be a way to earn parent service hours. Two hours will be given for each pint of blood do-

Come hear “Who is this crazy person masquerading as my teenager?”
The Parent Association is having a quest speaker at our Wednesday, March 4, Parent Association Meeting at 7pm in
Alumni Hall. Kent Toussaint will be speaking on “Who is that crazy person masquerading as my teenager?, understanding your adolescent, and communicating with our teen along with other topics on your teen. One parent service hour
per family will be given for attending.
Come hear “Seven Way to Slash College Costs”
The Parent Association is having a guest speaker at our Wednesday, April 1, Parent Association Meeting at 7pm in
Alumni Hall. Brian Safdari of College Planning Experts" will speak to the Parent Association. Brian has been educating
parents about what to do if they haven't saved enough money to pay for college.
Brian has worked with over one thousand families in the last 5 years, ranging from single parents to corporate CEO's
and he swears he can help anyone get through the process and save a bundle, no matter how much money they make.
Parents often make mistakes on the financial aid paperwork that cost them money.
He will discuss everything from the college choice process, to how to send your student to a fancy private school for less
than the cost of a community junior college.

Dear Alemany Family:
This is the first time that I call us “family.” That is because more and more we are becoming
united in our efforts for the young people that we serve. I have always been impressed with so
many individuals who have shown tremendous care for the students, but now there is a more a
sense that we are working together. We still need to grow a lot, but a lot of growth has taken
place. It is not an easy task since there are so many of us with so many components: parents,
students, teachers, staff, etc. During this time of Lent we are called to be more giving. I pray
that it will be a time for us to continue to grow and become truly a caring “family.”

We are fast approaching the end of the school year. You will be receiving a letter in April detailing end of the year senior events.
Be sure to note the following:

Senior Graduation fee is overdue. $175 payable to the Tuition Office
•
Prom, Thursday, May 21, 2009 at V2O in Long Beach. Seniors will not have school on May 21st.
•
Those attending Prom will need to be at school on May 21st no later than 3 p.m.
•
Payment for Prom and Grad Nite is cash or money order only. Cost of Prom and Grad Nite TBD. All outstanding
tuition and fees must be paid in order to purchase a Prom Bid, Grad Nite ticket, or receive graduation cap and gown.
•
Practice for Baccalaureate and Graduation will be on Tuesday, June 2nd in the gym, immediately after finals
•
All graduating seniors MUST attend both Baccalaureate Mass and Graduation
•
Senior Awards are Thursday, June 4th. Those receiving awards will be notified by the Studies Office. (This is a
calendar change)
•
Grad Night, Wednesday, May 27th, has had a location change to make the occasion more affordable. Seniors will
not have school on Thursday, May 28th. (This is a calendar change).
•
Baccalaureate Mass on Friday, June 5th at 6 p.m. in the gym. Cap and Gown required. Graduating Seniors are
asked to assemble at 5 p.m.
•
Tickets for the Baccalaureate Mass will be limited.
Graduation is Saturday, June 6th at 9 a.m. at College of the Canyons in Valencia. The graduation venue has been
changed to insure adequate parking. Seniors are asked to assemble at 8 a.m.

ALEMANY WINS ACADEMIC DECATHLON SUPER QUIZ
Bishop Alemany High School competed in the 2009 Academic Decathlon Regional Competition on February 7th. In front of over 500 parents, teachers, administrators and 28 other teams
they took first place in the Super Quiz. It was an amazing and exciting event to see thier pencils go up in excitement with each correct answer.
Top Student – Gold Medal Winner in the Competition was our own Therese Makhoul. Alemany took second place this
year with St. Frances taking the championship with only a 700 point difference.
The Bishop Alemany Team consists of: Therese Makhoul, Jonny Jollota, James Grinnell, James Guzman, Alex Jardini,
Paolo Salomon, Christian Estrada, Jessica Leitao and William Chang.
The Southern California Private Schools Academic Decathlon hosts both Private and Charter Schools from as far away
as Santa Ana, San Pedro and Lancaster. This year a total of twenty-nine teams competed for the right to go on to the
State Championship.
Congratulations to the Bishop Alemany Team – YOU DID US PROUD.
Alemany Community Helps Nyaseme Women Group's Dairy Project
Mr. Tim Peeters (Mathematics Department Chair) received an email from Mrs. Felgona Ouko, the head of the
Nyaseme Women Group, thanking the Alemany Community for helping several families in Kenya, Africa. Mr.
Peeters and his wife organized a collection that was originally indented to buy a biogas cooker for the group.
The support was more than expected, and with all the donations the group was able to buy not one but two
stoves and, in addition, two dairy cows as well. This will allow two families (of up to seven people each) to now
have fuel for cooking by being able to use cow dung instead of wood. In addition the cows will produce more
milk than the families will use and they will be able sell the surplus.
Mr. Peeters and his wife believe by supporting them the Alemany Community contributed not only towards the improvement of their
economic situation and their quality of life but also supported Women's rights in the third world, as well as reducing the destruction of
the environment through deforestation
