FROM OUR INTERNATIONAL PRESIDENT
Dear Sponsors and Vendors,
Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated has been providing service to communities throughout the United States and
worldwide for more than 95 years! In July 2016 we will gather in Orlando, Florida to celebrate our bi-annual Boulé. We
will honor the powerful legacy of our Founders and renew our commitment to continue being a community-conscious,
action-oriented organization.
More than 3,000 members of our blue and white family will gather to learn new strategies of engagement and develop
leadership skills that will strengthen our service initiatives. I want to personally extend an invitation to you to join us in
building new paths of service by partnering with us at this convention.
Please let me know if I can be of any assistance as we convene to inspire, engage and connect with members of Zeta Phi
Beta Sorority, Inc., our Amicae friends, and family members.
Sincerely,
Mary Breaux Wright

A BRIEF HISTORY OF
ZETA PHI BETA SORORITY, INC.
STEMONS

GOINGS
WATTS
Founded January 16, 1920, Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. was born out of the simple belief that sorority elitism and socializing should not
overshadow the real mission for progressive organizations - to address societal mores, ills, prejudices, poverty, and health concerns of the day.
Zeta began as an idea conceived by five coeds at Howard University in Washington D.C., predicated on the precepts of Scholarship, Service,
Sisterhood and Finer Womanhood.
The Five Founders of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated
Arizona Cleaver (Stemons): Served as the first president of Alpha chapter and the first national president of the Sorority. She completed
her graduate and post-graduate studies in the field of social work at Howard University.
Pearl Neal: After graduating from Howard University’s Conservatory of Music, continued her studies at the Juilliard School of Music. In 1938,
she was the first black woman in New York to earn a master’s degree in music from Columbia University. Neal taught music in North Carolina
public schools and served as a director of seniors majoring in music at Teachers College in Winston Salem, NC.
Myrtle Tyler (Faithful): A graduate of Howard University and the second national president of the sorority. She was a high school mathematics
and English teacher.
Viola Tyler (Goings): Graduated from Howard University with a teaching degree and a major in math. She taught school in Ohio for many
years and was always very active in community affairs.
Fannie Pettie (Watts): Graduated from Howard University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in education and taught at junior and senior high
schools in Savannah, Georgia.
Since its inception, the Sorority has chronicled a number of firsts. Zeta Phi Beta was the first Greek- letter organization to charter a chapter in
Africa (1948); to form adult and youth auxiliary groups; to centralize its operations in a national headquarters; and to be constitutionally bound
to a fraternity, Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Incorporated.
Zeta’s national and local programs include endowment of its National Educational Foundation, community outreach services and support of
multiple affiliate organizations. Zeta chapters and auxiliary groups have given hours of voluntary service to educate the public, assist youth,
provide scholarships and promote efforts for social and civic change.
A nonprofit organization, Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated is incorporated in Washington, D.C. and in the state of Illinois. The dues and gifts
of its members support the Sorority.

SORORITY FACTS
MISSION
ZETA CHAPTERS
The mission of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated is to foster the
ideals of service, charity, scholarship, civil and cultural endeavors,
sisterly love, and finer womanhood. These ideals are reflected in the
sorority’s national program for which its members and auxiliary
groups provide voluntary service to community outreach programs,
fund scholarships, support organized charities, and promote efforts
for social and civic change.
Zeta’s first two chapters after Howard University were established
at historically black universities--Morris Brown College and Morgan
State College--which were followed by a San Antonio-based
citywide chapter.

Neal, Myrtle Tyler (Faithful), Viola Tyler (Goings),
Fannie Pettie (Watts)

LEADERSHIP
In 1923, Theta chapter was established at Wiley College, making
it the first chapter of any black sorority to organize a collegiate
chapter in Texas. Zeta continued to make a concerted effort to
develop chapters at the nation’s historically black colleges and
universities and in other areas of the South.
Zeta began work to develop a chapter in Africa in the 1940s. Many
African students attended American universities in the 1930s and
1940s, and several of these students became members of Zeta Phi
Beta. An application was submitted, and the charter was granted in
December 1948 for the establishment of a Zeta graduate chapter
in Monrovia, Liberia, Africa.
