Tom Landers will be retiring
at the end of June. In
1981 he started as assistant
principal, was named
Marian’s Superintendent in
1983, and is also Superintendent of the seven Catholic
grade schools in McHenry County. During this time
over 4,300 students passed through Marian as the
school went through three strategic planning processes
resulting in two large additions and the purchase of
27 acres for athletic fields. The school doubled in size
and the student population grew by 80%.

Leo and Jean Cooney Estate Gift
To nominate a worthy candidate for the
ALUMNI AWARDS PROGRAM
In December Marian Central was
the recipient of an estate gift of
$250,000 from Leo and Jean Cooney
of Woodstock. We are extremely
grateful for this very generous gift
from Mr. and Mrs. Cooney who
have been supporters and benefactors
of the school’s many efforts since
its inception in 1959. This gift will
become a memorial scholarship
endowment account in the Rockford
Diocesan Foundation. The gift will
be safeguarded throughout the life
of the school with the earnings from
the account available to be withdrawn for tuition assistance for Marian
students. In fact, this is the second such gift Mr. and Mrs. Cooney have
made to help families in their quest to have their children attend Marian
Central. In 2002, Mr. and Mrs. Cooney set up their first endowed
scholarship account in the Diocesan Foundation to provide Marian
Central scholarships to students from families belonging to their home
parish, St. Mary, Woodstock. Since that time, that endowment has
provided tens of thousands of dollars of assistance to St. Mary parishioner
families. The earnings from the new account will be made available to
families whose students graduate from the Catholic elementary schools
in McHenry County. At Marian Central we remember and pray daily for
the repose of the souls of Mr. and Mrs. Cooney and all of our school’s
deceased benefactors as well as pray for our living benefactors.

REMEMBER WHEN
Fifty years ago, Marian Central was the
Football Suburban Catholic Conference
winner. Conference members were Notre
Dame of Niles, Joliet Catholic, Marmion,
St. Francis, St. Edward, Immaculate
Conception and St. Procopius (now Benet
Academy). Marian went through the
conference schedule undefeated but lost to
Edgewood of Madison, WI and Boylan.
Seniors on the team will be celebrating
their 50th class reunion this fall.
Twenty five years ago Marian Central won
a fourth football state championship. The
team lost their beloved coach, Don Penza,
that spring and dedicated the season to
him. Assistant Coach Steve Patton took
over as head coach and the team went
undefeated beating Burlington, Byron,
Galena, Momence and St. Joseph Ogden
to win the first place trophy. One of
the captains of the team, Tom Kruse,
is currently on staff at the school as a
Counselor in the Guidance Office.

BRUCKER IN COACHES
HALL OF FAME
Former head football coach Ed Brucker was recently
inducted into the Illinois High School Football Coaches
Association Hall of Fame. Brucker retired this year
after 12 years as head coach. He finished with a career
record of 178-72 and four consecutive NCAA Division
I quarterbacks: Jon Budmayr ‘09, Ben Krol ‘11, Chris
Streveler ‘13, and Billy Bahl ’15.
“I’ll remember the kids and the good times more than the
victories,” Brucker said. “I’d like to think I helped some
kids learn how to work hard. I have quite a few letters
from former players and parents and those mean a lot.”
Congratulations Coach Brucker.
STUDENT SERVICE
Marian students show they care about those less fortunate
with service projects throughout the school year. This
winter Key Club members rang the Salvation Army
bell at several locations, decorated at Valley Hi Nursing
Home, decorated the National Guard Armory for
Catholic Charities and caroled at Journey Care Hospice
in Woodstock.
Helping at the Nursing Home, senior Kenzie Mocogni
commented, “Serving others makes me feel how truly
blessed I am. Knowing I can bring happiness and help to
people is a one-in-a-million feeling. I admire their spirit
and am honored to serve them.”
The Key Club organized a second Northern Illinois Food
Bank Mobile Food Pantry and Mobile Medical Unit event
at the school on January 16.
