But the Dolphins, boasting 30 wins on the season, bounced back and won the 14th Tournament title in school history, 14-8, via eleven runs in the first two innings of the contest, played at MCU Park, the home of the Mets minor league affiliate Brooklyn Cyclones. For the finale, Baruch put senior David Chestnut on the hill, who left a game previously due to injury in the third inning. CSI sent out lefty James Mardikos. Both starters were knocked around coming right out of the gate. Mardikos got out of the first inning 1-2-3, but Chestnut was not as fortunate. Devin DiCasoli started the first inning off with a double, and was plated one batter later on a Tom DeWaters single to make it 1-0. CUNYAC Player of the Year Pat Gale was next, stroking another double and plating DeWaters. Joe Cassano then singled home Gale to make it 3-0. Sal Todaro then singled to move Cassano over, after registering his first out, Chestnut then saw the bases loaded when Mark Glennerster reached on an error. After getting Matt Oetting to strike out, Chestnut then walked both Steve Hession and DiCasoli with the bases-loaded to make it 5-0 CSI. That’s when Chestnut was lifted in favor of David Gega. He got DeWaters out to stop the bleeding but only after the Dolphins assumed control. But the pitching woes were mutual, as Baruch then proceeded to rip off three runs on Mardikos, the last two coming unearned via a passed ball and a Mardikos error on a failed pick-off attempt. CSI, however, was determined to build their lead, and did so with a six-run, five-hit second inning to make it 11-3 after just two innings. An Oetting two-RBI double was highlight, while Todaro, Sullivan, DeWaters and Gale all added RBI hits. The barrage also lifted Gega for Berliner, who made another relief appearance in as many games. “It felt pretty good putting up that 11-spot early on in game two,” said CSI freshman third baseman Cory Sullivan, who had 10 hits and scored eight runs in the four Dolphins Tournament games. “It was a great game to end a great tournament for us. We got the prize we were looking for.” Berliner was the veritable hero from then on for Baruch, settling the Bearcats down and pitching the next three scoreless innings for Baruch. In the meantime, the defending-champs scored single runs in the third and fourth to draw closer at 11-5, as Mardikos was lifted in favor of Casey Mulligan. After a couple of solid innings of relief, Mulligan also got in trouble, giving up a pair of runs in the sixth on a pair of RBI hits from Aldo Altamirano and Chestnut. That lifted Mulligan for Tom Matson, who got CSI out of the jam, but now only nursing an 11-7 lead. Recognizing the need for insurance, CSI got what it needed. A DeWaters sac fly gave CSI a 12-7 lead after their turn in the sixth, and the Dolphins then finally got to Berliner by plating another two runs in the seventh, this time via an Oetting sac fly and an RBI-double by Hession, scoring Glennerster, giving CSI the 14-7 lead. With a flair for the dramatic, Baruch started the games’ ninth inning with a single by Chestnut, who was replaced on the base by Joseph Murray. Murray stole second and was plated by Daly to make it 14-8. But Matson did settle from there, getting Melendez to strike out looking and getting two consecutive ground outs to end the inning and the game, at 14-8. The Dolphins stormed the field and claimed their medals, lifting the CUNYAC Championship for the second time in the last three years after an exhausting and emotionally and physically draining championship round at MCU Ballpark. “Our pitching depth was the difference in winning the Tournament,” said head coach Mike Mauro. “We were able to use more arms in game two than they were. Besides, it’s nice to see seniors like DiCasoli and DeWaters go out with a CUNY Championship.” Batting over .680 in the tournament, freshman third baseman Cory Sullivan was named the Tournament Most Valuable Player. He was 5-of-9 with two RBI and three runs scored on the day. The Dolphins had a number of players who were equally outstanding at the plate. DiCasoli went 5-for-10 with 4 RBI and two runs scored, while Gale went 4-for-5 with 2 RBI, three runs scored and six walks. As a team, CSI was walked 16 times on the afternoon and scorched four extra base hits. Mulligan was credited with the win, running his record to 4-0 this season. 2010 CUNYAC/MCU Tournament Results Championships at MCU Park (Brooklyn, NY) * Double Elimination Format 1. 2. 3. 5. The loss dips the Dolphins down to a season-ending 31-11 mark, while the Ospreys improved to 20-19. The tough loss for CSI came after the Dolphins opened a 1-0 lead in the game’s first inning. Off of Stockton starter Bryan Frank, the Dolphins started the first inning with Devon DiCasoli earning a walk and Thomas DeWaters getting on due to a catcher’s interference call. CSI starting pitcher Pat Gale then helped his own cause, stroking a single to right field, plating DiCasoli for the early tally. Unfortunately, the Dolphins would leave runners at second and third base to end the inning, and wouldn’t strand another until the game’s fifth inning. By then, the Ospreys would open up a 3-1 lead catapulted by a trio of runs in the game’s fourth inning. Still off of Gale, a Mike Wasco double to the gap in left-centerfield plated two runs, and the sophomore would then come around to score via Joe Farrell’s suicide squeeze play, giving the visitors the 3-1 cushion. Frank continued to settle in for the Ospreys, getting out of a pair of two-baserunner jams in the fifth and six frames. Meanwhile, RSC added another single tally in the seventh on a perfectly executed double-steal. While Chris Discher stole second in a first-and-third situation, Nick Scalise took off from third, and the throw home was not in time, giving the visitors 4-1 edge. The hole became deeper for the Dolphins when a Matt Allen RBI-single plated Discher in the top of the ninth inning to make it 5-1. After a sterling eight innings by Frank, RSC’s John Lightbody came in to pitch the ninth inning, and after giving up back-to-back singles to Sal Todaro and Mark Glennerster, the junior hurler forced a Tom DiPietro infield fly and a Steve Hession fly out to right field to end yet another threat, preserving the win. Frank earned the win, tossing eight innings, allowing a single run on three hits, walking four and fanning the same. CUNY Results in the Gale suffered the loss, tossing eight inECAC Metro Championships nings, allowing four runs (three earned) on seven hits, striking out seven. csi all-star devon dicasoli YearRound 1982 Semifinals Final 1984 Semifinals 1986 First Round Semifinals Final 1989 Semifinals Final 1991 Semifinals Final 1996 Semifinals Final 1997 Semifinals 1999 Semifinals 2000 Semifinals Final 2002 Semifinals 2003 Semifinals 2006 Semifinals Final 2007 Semifinals 2010 Quarterfinals Result Brooklyn 17, John Jay 4 New Jersey Tech 10, Brooklyn 8 New Jersey Tech 12, John Jay 2 Kean (NJ) 6, Staten Island 2 John Jay 9, Jersey City State 3 Kean (NJ) 12, John Jay 1 Jersey City State 6, Staten Island 5 Kean (NJ) 5, John Jay 4 Lehman 16, Drew (NJ) 6 Staten Island 5, Upsala (NJ) 2 Lehman 9, Staten Island 3 Staten Island 18, Ramapo 5 Kean (NJ) 8, Lehman 5 Staten Island 6, Kean (NJ) 3 Lehman 4, Mount St. Mary 3 Staten Island 15, John Jay 10 Lehman 11, Staten Island 10 (MVP - Juan ‘Kiko’ Reyes, Lehman) Mount St. Mary 11, Staten Island 5 St. Joseph’s (LI) 13, John Jay 12 Drew (NJ) 10, Staten Island 5 SUNY-Old Westbury 9, John Jay 8 Staten Island 11, Drew (NJ) 0 Staten Island 9, FDU-Madison (NJ) 3 (MVP - Victor Romano, CSI) FDU-Madison (NJ) 18, Staten Island 5 FDU-Florham (NJ) 7, Staten Island 2 John Jay 11, Manhattanville 7 Rutgers-Newark 10, John Jay 4 Richard Stockton (NJ) 10, John Jay 2 Richard Stockton (NJ) 5, Staten Island 1 Pat Gale Garners CSI’s 1st Ever All -American Nod 1992 New York Regional 1996 New York Regional Staten Island 8, Montclair State (NJ) 3 Staten Island 11, Ithaca 8 Ithaca 6, Staten Island 3 Staten Island 2, Rensselaer 0 Staten Island 5, Ithaca 3 Ithaca 5, Staten Island 1 Ithaca 7, Staten Island 3 Rensselaer 6, John Jay 2 Oswego State 2, John Jay 1 2011 CUNYAC Baseball Championship It’s been a pretty memorable 2010 for CSI hurler Pat Gale. The 6’3” junior put a pretty large punctuation mark on an outstanding season by being named to the American Baseball Coaches Association / Rawlings All-America First-Team, the first CSI baseball player to accomplish the feat, and one of the top honors to be bestowed on an NCAA baseball player. The heavy accomplishment is another feather in the cap of a CSI program that hammered down it’s 14th CUNYAC Championship in its 33-year history. Gale joined 13 other honorees on the First-Team that comprised a total of 10 teams. Gale was one of only seven players who made the first team as a non-senior, as he will return for his final effort in 2011. “It’s really amazing,” said Gale, the CUNY Conference’s Player of the Year. “I guess I’m pretty shocked, to tell you the truth.” CSI head coach Mike Mauro confirmed that Gale’s honor qualifies as school history — he’s the only Dolphin ever awarded first-team status by the ABCA. “It’s great for Pat because he deserves it, and great for our program because it reflects on what we’re trying to accomplish,” said Mauro. “He’s a Division I player and he proved it by making All-American. “He’s a No. 1 pitcher who hits over .400. It takes a special kind of athlete who can handle both and I think he thrives on it. There aren’t many college baseball players who can do what Pat does.” The latest honor for the southpaw Gale, who earned an 8-2 record with a 2.09 ERA in 77+ innings, is an accentuation to other notable achievements thrown his way. Within a span of only a few weeks Gale was named the CUNY Athletic Conference’s Player of the Year, and on the heels of winning the CSI Athletics Male Athlete of the Year award, Gale earned First-Team All-Region honors from the ABCA/Rawlings and a D3Baseball.com All-American Honorable Mention. The junior appeared in every contest pitching, playing first base, or in the designated hitter role. He shined in all avenues. Posting an 8-2 mark on the mound, he also batted a heavy .418, scattering a team-best 69 hits, 47 RBI, and five triples, boasting a .985 glove in the field as well. Along the way Gale broke or tied a total of eight CSI singlegame, single-season, or career records, making 2010 an extraordinary year in almost every facet of the game. Mauro said pitching coach Greg Belson has been a positive influence on Gale. “(Greg) has kept Pat calm and kept working with him on mechanics. He can only get better. CUNY Results in the He’s a rare athlete and the sky’s the limit. The (pro) scouts will be watching him next year.” NCAA Division III Championships Gale led the Dolphins to their best season in history, amassing a 31-11 record, a CUNYAC YearRound Result title, and a ECAC Metro NY/NJ Postseason 1991 New York Regional Ithaca 8, Staten Island 7 Tournament berth.
