Do you know who you’re voting for? Do you know where they stand on issues that affect our industry? Let us tell you about an easy way to follow what’s happening at the local, state, and national level and how to get in touch with your legislators with the click of a button! The HPBA Government Affairs Committee has created a Legislative Action Center that puts all this information right at your fingertips. Go to www.hpba.org and click on the Government Affairs link. Choose Legislative Action Center, create an account, enter your address and zip code, and everything you need to know is right there! You can contact your legislators by e‐mail, fax, phone, Twitter, or a regular, old‐fashioned letter. It’s not too late to take action on issues that you care about. We’d love to hear about it if you’ve tried it! Since our last newsletter, we’ve attended the 48th New England Building Officials Education Association (NEBOEA) Conference at UMass, Amherst. Diane Rossi, Shannon Rodgers and Rick Vlahos all manned the booth on Monday, meeting and speaking with local AHJ’s (Authorities Having Jurisdiction) to encourage them to look to NEHPBA members as our industry experts and to also explain the NFI certification process and how it relates to the Handbooks for Building Officials for both Solid Fuel & Gas Hearth Systems. Then Rick & Shannon were able to present two 1.5 hour CEU presentations to about 35 attendees. It is our mission to continue to engage AHJ’s through Building Officials Associations as well as local Propane Gas Associations. We are working on identifying local and regional groups and hope to attend their Annual Meetings and Expos and/or provide educational opportunities for them at their local monthly or quarterly meetings. By sharing our knowledge with building officials and propane gas experts, we hope to keep our name and expertise in the forefront when they have questions regarding hearth products. In light of the above, we would like to create a Speakers Bureau to accommodate the anticipated requests from these AHJ groups. NEHPBA Government Affairs would provide you with a broad‐content presentation, which could be individualized to local code and interest. We also ask that you be willing to share your knowledge and experience if there are questions following the presentation. Some of you may already be doing this and could possibly mentor others who may be interested in sharing their passion and expertise with these groups. Travel would be required only in your local area and we’re looking for two‐to‐ three presenters from each of NEHPBA’s seven‐state area. If you’d be interested in becoming a presenter, please contact Diane Rossi at NEHPBA at 603/669‐2740, ext 6# or diane@nehpba.com or email me at twaring@familyandbusinessdirections.com. To our New York Members – hopefully, you received our in‐depth email explaining the NYSERDA/NY Renewable Heat incentive program. Please click here or go to http://nehpba.com/Resources/Documents/NEHPBA% 20Outline%20of%20Member%20Guide%20to%20Renewable% 20Heat%20NY.pdf for all the information (and then some!) you’ll need to help your customers participate in this program. We’ll end the way we started – Don’t forget to vote! Exercise your right! If you don’t vote, you have no right to complain! Look to the NEHPBA website for the H.E.L.P. Manual updates as soon as the election results are in.. Educational Opportunities 2015 C.E.U. Are you aware of the new safety mandate for gas fireplace glass fronts? Member Reception to kick off the 2015 HPBExpo at Here's what you need to know... The revised standard takes effect January 1, 2015. Only compliant units may be manufactured after January 1, 2015. Non‐complying units can still be sold after the effective date. There is no deadline for such sales. Decorative elements are allowed. Standard applies only to gas fireplaces and glass‐fronted heaters with glass surface temperatures that exceed 77.8°C or 172°F. It does not apply to solid‐fuel burning appliances. For installers: Manufacturers must supply a barrier on all glass‐fronted gas products with glass surface temperatures that exceed 77.8°C (172°F). Barrier must be in place when the product is installed. Installer must call the client's attention to the barrier and explain why it is required. Barriers are intended to protect children and other at‐risk individuals. 101 Broadway, 3rd Floor Nashville, TN 37203 March 4, 2015 7:00pm ‐ 10:00 pm FREE Mobile App for NEHPBA IS HERE! Download the “NEW” MOBILE APP (for iPhone, iPad & Android)! Everything from membership information, events, government affairs and more is available for members to stay informed about NEHPBA at any time! Use the QR code to Download Remember... if you do not follow the new requirements you may be the one in jeopardy. What about your showroom? Retailers need to contact the manufacturers they represent. The new standard does not affect existing installations but HPBA's position is that the safety of children should be paramount. You may want to retrofit the gas fireplaces in your showroom. Your past customers may also want to retrofit their appliances using aftermarket barriers. While it is not mandatory to have a safety screen on all showroom models it is certainly wise. If you have any questions on this or other safety issues please contact HPBA. Article courtesy of HPBA of Canada. Who are they and what is their mission? NEHPBA has identified those reps below as the “best of the best” in our region, those who are committed to you, this industry and this organization. They are the eyes, ears and communicators for you, the members. They are tasked with contacting two companies per week to either renew or become NEHPBA members. How can you help? In two ways: first, talk to them about NEHPBA, tell them why you are or are not a member. Second, there is “strength in numbers” - help to build a stronger association by talking to people who can become Associate members companies who indirectly deal with us (tool companies, insurance companies, financial institutions, business systems providers, public relations firms, etc.) .
