Chairman’s Message
Dear parents, students, faculty, staff, and friends,
Thirteen years ago, Pope John Paul II High School set out to be something
unique: a faithful, vibrant and innovative school that blended a classical, liberal
arts curriculum with a mission that was both Catholic and ecumenical. I am
pleased to affirm that this vision is firmly implanted. Earlier this year, I remarked
that JPII is best viewed as an “idea” – never really completed because it always
evolves. All great organizations, including schools, must continuously improve
to remain relevant to all constituencies – students, parents, faculty, staff and the
greater JPII community. This too has been part of the fabric of JPII.
The constant, however, has been our mission: Inspired by faith, Pope John Paul
II High School prepares students to be strong in mind, body, character and spirit for lives of learning and
service according to the Gospel.
The nuance to this mission is as much an outward extension as it is inward, which leads to our tag line
“Faith Leads Us Beyond Ourselves”. The most important parts of the curriculum are not the facts that are
learned but the characters that are shaped. Who our kids become is the measure of JPII. This is our work.
2013-2014 was another great year for academics, men and women’s sports, and programs such as chorus,
band, theatre, and art. All of these activities were designed to expand our students’ interest. At the core
of these results are our exemplary administration, faculty and staff.
I hope all of you will continue to take an active role in our school’s activities and events. Your involvement
and your charitable gifts are important to our future. Participation in the Fund for Excellence is an
indication of the pride that our families, alumni, and donors have for JPII. As you know, tuition and
fees alone do not cover the full cost of educating a student at JPII. Whether recruiting and retaining
outstanding faculty, improving facilities, providing financial aid, or supporting classroom teaching, the
Fund for Excellence enables JPII to provide critical resources that are not covered by tuition. Every gift of
every size truly makes an immediate and tangible difference for our students.
As a proud parent of a current senior and a recent alumnus of JPII, I continue to be honored to serve
as the Chairman of the Board of Trustees. It is a privilege to work with such a talented and committed
Board, whose singular focus is to support our gifted faculty, staff and administration in their pursuit to
educate the mind, body, character and spirit of our students. I would like to recognize our Headmaster
Faustin Weber who, earlier this year, made the decision to move closer to members of his extended family,
effective June of 2015. Faustin came to JPII seven years ago and has continued the trajectory of excellence
forward from our school’s founders. His many achievements include numerous capital improvements to
our facilities, increased success in our AP program, new foreign exchange programs, and a deepening of
our Catholic identity. The Board is grateful for his steadfast dedication.

Letter from the Headmaster
Dear parents, alumni and friends of JPII,
C.S. Lewis uses a great simile from Mere Christianity which
beautifully captures our vision for students at JPII:
“Imagine yourself as a living house. God comes in to rebuild that
house. At first, perhaps, you can understand what He is doing. He is
getting the drains right and stopping the leaks in the roof and so on;
you knew that those jobs needed doing and so you are not surprised.
But presently He starts knocking the house about in a way that hurts
abominably and does not seem to make any sense. What on earth Faustin and Diane Weber
is He up to? The explanation is that He is building quite a different house from the one you
thought of - throwing out a new wing here, putting on an extra floor there, running up towers,
making courtyards. You thought you were being made into a decent little cottage: but He is
building a palace. He intends to come and live in it Himself.”
Our mission is indeed to cooperate with God’s grace for the purposes of building palaces—
cathedrals, even—where God can reside in the lives of each of our students.
I am proud to report to you, our “stake-holders,” that this vision is alive and well at JPII. You
can see it through our students’ continued commitment to serving the needy, where in 20132014 they gave over 20,000 hours of volunteer service, or in our school’s liturgies and prayer
services. You can see it in the academic achievements of our graduates, who secured over 15
million dollars in scholarship offers to over 130 different schools. You can see it in our AP
results, where our students took 530 exams, earning 97 AP Scholar honors (a school record)
including ten “National AP Scholar” awards (though there is no formal bookkeeping, I am
reasonably sure this is an all-time record for our diocese). More important than statistics,
you can see the mission play out in the hallways, classrooms and ball fields of JPII, where
our students seem happy, self-confident and future oriented.
As most of you know, as “empty nesters” now, Diane and I are leaving JPII in June of 2015
to be closer to our family. It has been a great privilege to serve this school these last seven
years. May God continue to bless our students, faculty and our families.
