CASE STUDY Schierstein Bridge, Max Bögl Group, Germany Max Bögl Group, Germany’s largest privately owned construction firm, most famous for the construction and refurbishment of Bayer Leverkusen’s BayArena and Frankfurt’s FIFA World Cup hosting Commerzbank-Arena, is showing continued dedication to safety by specifying WES+, Europe’s only EN 54 compliant Project Summary wireless fire alarm system, in the construction of the New Client: Schierstein Bridge. This €250 million project includes construction of an entirely new four-lane bridge spanning the Rhine - connecting the major conurbations of Mainz and Wiesbaden. The original bridge was closed due to safety concerns in February 2015. Completion is expected in 2019. Max Bögl Group Project Value: €250 million Project Type: Infrastructure Location: Hesse, Germany In specifying the use of the Ramtech Electronic’s WES+ on the New Schierstein Bridge, Max Bögl is the latest in a long line of UK and European construction companies discovering the ease of use and EN 54 compliance benefits of a WES+ wireless fire safety system. By choosing WES+, which is specifically engineered for construction sites, Max Bögl has demonstrated that it places the safety of employees, those living and working close to its sites, and its client’s interests above all else WES+ at Schierstein Bridge The construction of the bridge lies next to the Mainz Sand Dunes, a 12,000 year old protected area of special botanical interest, home to myriad rare species of flora and fauna, which requires protection. With such densely vegetated, dry environment, fire could spread quickly through the fragile dunes without the warning of the WES+ fire alarms. Max Bögl has specified the use of 30 WES+ Fire Point units with audible and strobe features allowing workers to be alerted even in noisy environments. WES+ is also available with heat, smoke and dust resistant detector heads to provide 24/7 coverage, even when workers are not present on site, with project managers alerted automatically via SMS. On a project with the sheer magnitude of the Schierstein Bridge, a WES+ Link was incorporated into the system to provide complete coverage over the 1km site. With a 3 year battery life (tested under normal operating conditions) the WES+ units will not require any maintenance until the bridge project is completed in 2019. And, because it is a wireless system there is no need for specialist trades on site for regular rewiring work, saving time and cost for Max Bögl Group. www.wesfire.co.uk WES+ information line: CASE STUDY “The WES+ fire alarm system Ion Theuerkauf, project Manager at Max Bögl Group said: “The WES+ fire alarm system has given us peace of mind during has given us peace of mind” the construction phases, allowing us to protect workers and nearby buildings from the danger of fire. Because it is a wireless system we found it very easy to install and EN 54 compliance means that we have a system in place that provides Max Bögl Group with the highest levels of fire safety in Europe.” “WES+ continues to make significant inroads into the European market as more construction companies realise that fire safety is critical on site,” said Paul Henson, Sales and Marketing Director at Ramtech Electronics. “By investing in WES+ and taking an uncompromising approach to fire safety, Max Bögl Group has set the benchmark for construction companies in Germany and firmly established itself as a leader in this area.” EN 54 is a mandatory European standard that specifies requirements and laboratory testing for every component of a fire detection and fire alarm system. EN 54 clearly states that fire detection and alarm systems are for use in ‘buildings or other construction works’ (EN 54 Part 1, Section 2.1). The WES+ system uses Category 1 receivers (ETSI 300-220-1) throughout, ensuring maximum signal reliability across the entire Schierstein Bridge project. The wireless system is fully scalable for any size of construction or demolition project and once a development is complete, it can simply be transferred to the next site for re-use. Simplified on-site setup means that it is possible to activate, add or clone units with just a few button presses. About WES+ Since the 2010 launch of WES (Wireless Emergency System), Ramtech has supplied many thousands of units and its wireless technology is currently being used by around 75 percent of the top 100 construction companies in the UK. WES+ is the latest technological development from Ramtech, drawing on over 25 years’ experience of developing radio technology. It is the first UK wireless battery-powered fire alarm system engineered to comply with EN54 and therefore the Construction Products Regulation. www.wesfire.co.uk WES+ information line:
