In addition, they prune this algae by eating furrows, which stimulate growth within a manageable territory. This relationship is one of mutual symbiosis as the algae receives waist products from the limpet. It ranges from the Mediterranean to Senegal in Africa Lower intertidal Under rocks in dens, mainly in the lower intertidal and subtidal regions. Can have deeper dens down 10’s of meters Their tentacles can reach up to 1m in length. The proper way to sex an octopus is to see if the 3rd right tentacle has suction cups at the tip. They are very cute until they ruin an article of your clothing with their uncleanable ink. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Common_octopus 21 Group Members Observation/Picture Species Group Subgroup Species Name Major Habitat Intertidal Zone Focal Habitat Notes Picture by (1) Lauren Salcedo, (2) Zeenya Zepeda 4 Invertebrate Cephalopod Tuberculate cuttlefish (Sepia tuberculata) Intertidal and Subtidal Low Under large rocks Uncommon, can camouflage within environment, watch out for inking Lauren Salcedo (below) 22 Group Members Observation/Pictur e Species Group Subgroup Species Name Major Habitat Intertidal Zone Focal Habitat Notes Picture by (1) Victoria, (2) Travis, (3) Shannon, (4) Amrita, (5) Amanda 2 Algae Fan-Shaped Brown Algae Ralfsia (Ralfsia verrucosa) Intertidal Mid (Low) Rock Substrate Forms gardens with S. longiscosta Peter Jonas (http://www.unterwasserweltostsee.de/html/warzige_braunalge.html) (below) 23 Group Members Observation/Pictur e Species Group Subgroup Species Name Major Habitat Intertidal Zone Focal Habitat Notes Picture by (1) Victoria, (2) Travis, (3) Shannon, (4) Amrita, (5) Amanda 13 Algae Simple Green Sheet Algae Rigid Sea Lettuce (Ulva rigida) Intertidal Low-Med-High Exposed Rocks Bright green, foliose leaves; Early colonizer; Fast-growing; Heavily grazed by many species; Disc-shaped holdfast; Ubiquitous in distribution M.D. Guiry (http://www.seaweed.ie/descriptions/ulva_rigida.php) (below) 24 Final Species for Lab Practical Group Members Observation/Picture Species Group Subgroup Species Name Major Habitat Intertidal Zone Focal Habitat Notes Picture by (1) Jessica, (2) Elena 3 Algae Heterokontophyta Dead-man’s fingers (Splachnidium rugosum) Intertidal Mid, Low Rocky areas Mucus protects against desiccation Jessica (below) 25 Final Species for Lab Practical Group Members Observation/Picture Species Group Subgroup Species Name Major Habitat Intertidal Zone Focal Habitat Notes Picture by (1) Jessica, (2) Elena 1 Algae Heterokontophyta Sea Bamboo (Ecklonia maxima) Subtidal Subtidal 10-15m deep in coastal waters Great to hold onto during surge because it is strongly attached; lots of epiphytes Bioe159 Species List (below) 26 Final Species for Lab Practical Group Members Observation/Picture Species Group Subgroup Species Name Major Habitat Intertidal Zone Focal Habitat Notes Picture by (1) Jessica, (2) Elena 2 Algae Chlorophyta Stephen’s Codium (Codium stepheniase) Intertidal, subtidal Low saxicolous Squishy freaks Elena (below) 27 Final Species for Lab Practical Group Members Observation/Picture Species Group Subgroup Species Name Major Habitat Intertidal Zone Focal Habitat Notes Picture by (1) Jessica, (2) Elena 5 Algae Rhodophyta Purple Laver (Porphyra capensis) Intertidal High Rocky areas, in low wave impacted areas, hanging high on rocks Looks like a dead plastic bag http://www.seaweedafrica.org/webpictures/DSC_2368-1.jpg (below) 28 Final Species for Lab Practical Group Members Observation/Picture Species Group Subgroup Species Name Major Habitat Intertidal Zone Focal Habitat Notes Picture by (1) Cori Hume, (2) Tarah Mayes, (3) Avery Goelz, (4) Max Butensky 4 Fish Sharks Dark Shyshark (Haploblepharus pictus) Subtidal Low Bottom dwelling at the base of Ecklonia When scared it curls into a ball and hides its eyes in its tails, scans the seafloor for prey http://www.aquarium.co.za/images/sized/images/uploads/dark_shyshark278x186.jpg (below) 29 Final Species for Lab Practical Group Members (1) Leif Russell Hansen, (2) Sara Nadine Wilson, (3) Paolo Giannino Jackson Helious Marra-Bigges, & (4) Katrine Julie Heuer Observation/Picture 1 (dead) Species Group Vertebrate Subgroup Chondrichthyes Species Name Spotted sevengill cowshark (Notorynchus cepedianus) Major Habitat Subtidal Intertidal Zone Low Focal Habitat Bottom dwelling temporal dwelling species (130 meter) Notes Picture by http://blog.getaway.co.za/files/2012/12/cow-shark-resized.jpg (below) 30 Final Species for Lab Practical Group Members (1) Leif Russell Hansen, (2) Sara Nadine Wilson, (3) Paolo Giannino Jackson Helious Marra-Bigges, & (4) Katrine Julie Heuer Observation/Picture 7 Species Group Vertebrate Subgroup Chondrichthyes Species Name Great White Shark (Carcharodon carcharias) Major Habitat Pelagic Intertidal Zone None Focal Habitat Open ocean and surface Notes Shark diving was awesome! Seem to be associated with a variety of substrates and covers, such as boulders, Stephen’s codium, encrusting coralline, leafy red algae, etc. Highly variable dark-green to red mottling. May be a complex of 2 or 3 species. The first three dorsal spines are longer, forming a crest. Males can be identified by having a much longer crest than females.
