HUNWICK’S EGG by Mem Fox and Pamela Lofts This lovely story is about a Bilby named Hunwick and his mysterious egg. With beautiful pictures and lots of Australian animals, this story will keep you guessing as to who is hiding in that egg of his! DID YOU K NOW? The story of Hunwick’s egg is sure to leave you both wondering about what was inside the egg. Encouraging your child to guess what it might be is great way to develop your child’s imagination and creativity. There are no wrong answers, so allow (and encourage!) your child to make wild guesses, as well as more logical ones too. B E F O R E R E A DI NG You might talk to your child about the Bilby, and how it is an endangered animal, which means it is very rare and special. Talk to your child about eggs and where they have seen them, and ask if they know other animals that have eggs too, like chickens, snakes, platypuses and turtles. W HI L E Y O U A R E R E A DI N G There are many animal characters in this story so you might like to use a different voice for each animal. Some of the things the other animals say to Hunwick are not very nice. You might ask your child: “How do you think Hunwick feels about what the emu said? Do you think it made him sad?” Point out the different Australian animals in the story, such as the cockatoo, emu and kangaroo. Have you seen any of these animals? A F T E R Y O U F INI S H R E A DI N G Talk to your child about what could be inside the egg, or even if your child thinks it’s an egg at all. Your child might like to make an egg using playdough or plasticine, and create models of the different things that could be inside it. Hunwick was a good friend to the egg. You might find a special rock, stone or shell on one of your adventures that your child can look after.
