About The Mihai Eminescu Trust
•
We were established in year 1987, and we are
based in Romania and UK
•
We work to preserve and revitalize the cultural
and natural heritage of South-Eastern
Transylvanian rural areas (the former Saxon
Villages)
•
In our now 12-year experience, we have
deployed over 1141 projects of various
amplitude in 26 villages and 4 towns
•
Our core concept is to extensively involve the
local communities and local authorities

The ‘Whole Village’ Concept
•
One of our core lines of work is the ‘Whole Village’ Project
•
The aim of this project is to revitalize local communities and help them
become self-sufficient
•
This aim is achieved through three key objectives:
• Restoration of the cultural heritage: buildings, landscape, crafts
and traditional farming practices
• Development of local skills and traditional crafts, by providing
training for villagers
• Development of local entrepreneurial capability, by supporting
small rural businesses, creating jobs and career opportunities
• Hence, the project takes an integrated approach – it comprises the entire
village, the entire community and their entire heritage
The ‘Whole Village’ Key Principles
1.
Projects are chosen, developed and managed by local people, in
conjunction with the community
2.
Construction materials are sourced locally
3.
Local labour force is always used
4.
The necessary skills are obtained by training local craftsmen
5.
Projects support small rural businesses, cultural and eco-tourism,
managed by local families, traditional and organic farming

Training in Traditional Crafts
•
We trained over 130 villagers in traditional building skills and crafts, such as:
- carpentry, wood carving and joinery
- tile and brick making
•
People were provided diplomas enabling them to practice a craft in Romania and
abroad, and to open their own business
•
We provided highly specialized trainers from Romania and abroad
