Issue 7, Term 2
Dear Parents and Caregivers
In this newsletter I would like to take the opportunity to update you on some very exciting development
projects that I believe will enhance future teaching and learning opportunities at the College. I also invite
your feedback and ask for your support.
 Many of you will be aware that in 2011, in response to our growing roll and shortage of classroom
space, the Roncalli Development Trust funded the refurbishment/development of the Chanel Block
at the west end of the College. This now provides us with an additional, large, state of the art
classroom, an outdoor education storage/teaching facility and a double carport for our school vans
and trailers. This extra teaching space has eased pressure on our facilities and has allowed us not to
have to use the school library as a timetabled teaching space. The funding from the Roncalli
Development Trust comes from the Parent Partnership Donation that you pay to the College each
year and I thank all of you who support the College by paying that donation.
 This term the College will finally get a major upgrade to our computer network (SNUP – School
Network Upgrade Project). This is a government initiative aimed at improving technology in
schools. We will receive new fibre optic cabling, ethernet switching and power/computer outlets.
The cost of this project will exceed $200,000 of which 2/3 will be covered by the government and
1/3 by our proprietor. This will significantly improve the speed/reliability/functionality of our
network, allow students and teachers greater access to technology and enable us to connect to UFB
by 2013.
 Roncalli has just purchased a brand new school van. It is a Toyota Hiace 3.0 Diesel 12 seater
minibus. I would like to acknowledge and thank the Lions Foundation and Roncalli PTA for their
very generous contributions. All bookings for school vans are now done on-line (SOBBS) or through
the College office.
 Finally, I would like to announce our latest exciting project which is the proposed conversion of our
existing library into a multi-purpose information/learning centre. This project will follow on from
our SNUP upgrade and offer our students increased e-learning facilities in addition to our existing
library facilities. I have had some plans and concept drawings prepared and have the support of the
PTA for some funding. In fact, the proceeds from this year’s School Fair will go towards this project.
To this end, I do hope you support the Roncalli Fair as it is a major source of fundraising for our PTA.

STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT
INTERNATIONAL WRITING SUCCESS
Year 9 student Molly Piddington was recently selected as one of ten successful entries for the Skulduggery
Pleasant 'Ten Times the Awesome competition. Her chapter along with those from Australia, the UK and
USA was personally selected by the author as being of particular 'awesomeness'.
Skulduggery Pleasant is a series of novels written by Derek Landy that merge the genres of horror,
comedy, mystery, romance and fantasy. The success of the series has resulted in Landy being awarded the
coveted Red House Children's and Hampshire Book Awards. A smashing success world wide, readers love
the mix of horror and fantasy, an offbeat tale of a 12-year-old Irish girl who teams up with the skeleton of a
dead magician to fight the powers of evil. If you are interested you can find out more at
www.skulduggerypleasant.co.uk/.
Molly will have the opportunity meet Derek Landy when he comes to Christchurch next month. Her
delicious humour in emulating the style of Landy is evident in her winning entry below.

Valkyrie groaned, and sat up. “I told you it was a trap.” She said.
“No, you said it looked like a trap.” Skulduggery corrected. “That’s completely different.”
He helped her up as a door opened behind them and Sadistica Tortura walked through, an unsettling smile on her
lips. Her long, blonde hair was in a tight bun, and her blue eyes sparkled maliciously. A sword hung on her hip, but it
looked out of place, clashing with her elegant, expensive clothes.
“How nice of you to join us.” Sadistica chuckled, smirking. “I really didn’t expect-“
“How long will we be here?” Valkyrie interrupted. Sadistica smirk faded slightly, to be replaced by a slight frown.
“Pardon?” She said, slightly confused.
“I just wanted to know how long I’ll be here. I’m supposed to be babysitting Alice.” Valkyrie explained, looking
serious.
“And Ghastly said he’d finish my suit today.” Skulduggery interjected. Sadistica gritted her teeth.
“You shouldn’t worry about that. You should worry about the prospect of imminent death.” She growled.
“I don’t like your outfit.” Valkyrie ignored Sadistica’s comment.
“I’m already dead.” Skulduggery said happily. “So I’m going to keep worrying, alright?”
“Shut up!” Sadistica hissed furiously.
“Why?” Valkyrie snickered. “Are we getting on your nerves?”
“No, I just want to threaten you with unbelievably painful torture.” Sadistica managed a sneer.
“Sounds fun. Can I go first?” Skulduggery said eagerly.
“Why aren’t you two scared!?” Yelled Sadistica, glaring at the two angrily. “I’m about to kill you both, and you don’t
seem to care!”
“Well, your face scares me.” Smirked Valkyrie.
“Ignorant brat!” Sadistica roared, slashing at Valkyrie and narrowly missing her cheek with the tip of the sword.
Valkyrie flinched away, and then looked annoyed.
“I know.” Skulduggery said sadly. “She couldn’t tell the difference between my borrowed skull and my real one.”
“I couldn’t care less!” Sadistica snarled, pointing her sword at Skulduggery.
“Be careful of my hat.” Skulduggery pointed to it. “It was very expensive.”
“Skulduggery, Ghastly makes all your clothes, including your hat, for free.” Valkyrie rolled her eyes, smirking.
“Well, if I did pay for it, it would be very expensive.” Skulduggery nodded.
Sadistica stomped a foot on the floor. “I’m here too!”
“You’re more immature than Valkyrie.” Skulduggery sniggered.
“I’m not immature!” Valkyrie protested.
“Neither am I!” Hissed Sadistica, jabbing Skulduggery in the arm, which earned a yell of pain from him.
“I prove my point.” He muttered.
“Oh, I’ve had enough of this!” Sadistica yelled, lunging at Skulduggery, who proceeded to punch her square in the
face.
“It was getting rather boring.” Skulduggery chuckled as Sadistica slumped to the floor.
“That was extraordinarily easy.” Valkyrie commented drily, poking Sadistica.
“I am a genius.” Skulduggery shrugged, walking to the door.
“You say it like it’s obvious.” Valkyrie laughed, following him.
“It is.” Skulduggery nodded as he left the cell. “I made it so obvious so you wouldn’t forget.”
“Of course you did.” Valkyrie laughed, shutting and locking the door behind them. “Of course.”

DUKE OF EDINBURGH’S HILLARY AWARD
This is an excellent programme which gives young people (14 to 25 yrs) the opportunity to develop skills
and attributes which will accompany them through life. There are four key areas of activity – skills, service,
sport and adventurous journey. There are three levels of award – Bronze, Silver and Gold. These awards
are well recognised internationally.
Usually students start at the bronze level in Year 10 or when they turn 14, with each level being worked on
through the course of a year. However, there are several different configurations, including direct entry to
silver/gold for senior students, which essentially means that it is never too late to begin.
Roncalli College supports students engaged in this award. For example, the year 10 outdoor education
camp at Boyle river meets the Adventurous Journey component for Bronze level. For more information
about the Hillary Award, visit the website: www.dofehillary.org.nz We also have some pamphlets available
at the school office.
Mr Guy Sutherland has been coordinating this programme for some time, and has a register of currently
enrolled students. As a parent of two young people currently involved in the award I have offered to assist
Guy with the maintenance of the programme. I would like to hear from each student so that I can update
your details, which level you are working on and what service you are undertaking, how you are
configuring your award and whether you need any further assistance, for example finding a service to
volunteer for. My name is Jillian Woodall and you can get in touch with me by email:
candjwoodall@clear.net.nz or phone 688 8617 or text 027 306 7799.

Finding a Career Path with Gateway
Tara Wilkins - HiJinx For Hair
Ashley Skinner - Averis & Box
The Gateway Programme is well underway for 2012. The TEC (Tertiary Education
Commission) has allocated funding for 30 students at Roncalli to participate in the
programme this year and we almost have our full quota out on regular work
placements for 1 day a week.
Gateway opens a new pathway from school to the world of work. It is an
outstanding opportunity to blend school study with workplace learning and
experience. Learning is assessed in the workplace and the credits students gain
count towards national qualifications including NCEA; Gateway is equivalent to
students starting an apprenticeship while still at school while giving them the
opportunity to try out potential careers and to build links to Industry Training
Organisations, Modern Apprenticeships and workplaces.
We have students in a variety of industry areas including joinery, building,
automotive, early childhood, hospitality, plumbing, sport & recreation,
hairdressing, occupational therapy, tourism and retail.
Each student has an individual learning plan customised to their needs with a
relevant ITO (Industry Training Organisation) providing learning programmes
which are often assessed in the workplace by an outside assessor (just like an
apprenticeship). Students also attend Polytechnic courses related to their
learning area eg welding, barista, early childhood course etc…
The students in Gateway have all completed First Aid and Workplace Safety
courses and they have CVs which are updated throughout the year.
Apprenticeship Success
Cameron Fitzgerald has completed his Gateway Placement with Claas Harvest
Centre – Canterbury. While on his weekly placement Cameron has completed
the MITO StartUp Ignition Programme under the guidance of his workplace
employer Warren Todd and MITO Training Advisor Richard Wright. Cameron has
also completed certificates in welding, first aid and workplace safety. He
achieved NCEA Level 2 in the first 2 terms of the year.
Cameron has gained an apprenticeship with Claas Harvest Centre and his Gateway
unit standards will cross-credit directly over to his qualification. Congratulations

SOUTH ISLAND SECONDARY SCHOOLS JUNIOR NETBALL DEVELOPMENT TOURNAMENT
Roncalli College Year 9A and 10A netball teams travelled to Christchurch during the first week of the school holidays
to compete at the SISS Junior Netball Development Tournament. The tournament was held over three days at Hagley
Park and played in very cold and wet conditions. The players represented the school with pride and produced great
results, both teams won 6 out of 8 games.
The 10A team qualified for the Division One top 8 playoffs and finished a well-deserved 3rd place beating last year’s
winners Waimea College by four goals. This was an outstanding result and exceeded the team’s goal of finishing
higher than 8th place at last year’s tournament. The year 10 final was won by Cashmere over Southland Girls HS
33-30.
Congratulations to Laura Dorgan who was named as one of ten
identified year 10 players at the end of the tournament. WELL
DONE LAURA!
Year 10 results:Ronc 35 – Southland Girls 46; Ronc 50 – St Andrews 14; Ronc 53 –
Taieri 16; Ronc 32 – Marlborough Girls 30; Ronc 43 – Lincoln 30;
Division 1 - quarter finals – Ronc 34 – Christchurch Girls HS 32;
semi-final – Ronc 35 – Cashmere 38; Div 1 3rd & 4th playoff Ronc 42
– Waimea 38;
The 9A team were very unlucky not to make the Division One playoffs after producing good results throughout the
first stage of the tournament. Roncalli finished on even points with Christchurch Girls HS therefore goal differential
came into the equation and a .42 goal ratio in favour of CGHS had them move into the top 8. CGHS went onto win
the year 9 final beating Southland Girls HS 35-20. Roncalli made it through to the Division 2 final (9th & 10th place)
where it was a Catholic School encounter with Marian. Roncalli fought hard but it was Marian who took the win by 2
goals.
Year 9 results:Ronc 52 – Villa Maria B 17; Ronc 28 – Christchurch Girls HS 39; Ronc 39 – Nayland 12; Ronc 33 – Southland Girls HS
31; Ronc 19 – St Hildas 15;
Division 2 – quarter finals – Ronc 41 – Cashmere A 12; semi-final – Ronc 34 – Columba 26; Final – Ronc 18 – Marian
20;
A HUGE thank you must go to Steph Waud, Karen Dorgan,
Ginny Davenport, Amanda O’Brien, Caroline McKay and
Richelle Cannell who stayed with the teams and assisted
as coaches / managers/ parent help – YOU ALL DID AN
AMAZING JOB! Also a special mention to Vashti
Hammond and Fiona Austin who helped in the kitchen
during the busy times! Thank you to netball coordinator
Jose Zandbergen for her hard work behind the scenes to
help make this tournament such a success for everyone.
To the parents, grandparents, family members and
supporters who travelled to Christchurch to support the
girls in what were at times atrocious conditions! Your support was very much appreciated and the girls really did
enjoy the noise from the side-line especially in the close games!
