Juveniles who commit sexual offenses Over the years, the PRC staff has noted that, similar to national trends, a portion of child sexual abuse victims have reported that their abuser is an adolescent. According to national data, juveniles themselves commit a considerable proportion of sexual offenses against children, with estimates indicating about a third of offenses are committed by juveniles, according to Dr. David Finkelhor of the Crimes Against Children Research Center. 90% of sexually abused children are abused by someone they know. Here are a few suggestions to help prevent sexual abuse and address adolescent offenders: Pay attention to how adults and older youth behave around children. Warning signs can include poor personal boundaries, being overly interested in relationships with children, inappropriate sexual conversations around children and not respecting a child’s “no.” Talk to your children about sexuality and safety at a developmentally-appropriate level, including healthy boundaries and the correct names for body parts. Don’t send the message that these topics are off-limits or restricted to a one-time conversation. Review trusted adults your child could tell if something did happen. Seek appropriate sex offender treatment for juveniles who offend. Appropriate treatment is essential, since compared to adult offenders, youth are more responsive to treatment. It is difficult to think that an adolescent, particularly a child you know well, could commit sexual abuse and this can lead to not believing the child victim when they disclose. While this issue may be multifactorial, some of these adolescents may have been victims themselves, or may have not have benefited from a positive discussion about appropriate sexual contact and sexual safety. These cases are particularly difficult, both from a standpoint of more services needed for the victims and their families, as well as concern for the adolescent, who may now be labeled for the rest of his or her life as an offender or “perpetrator.” While it might be scary to talk to your children and adolescents about sexual safety, it is scarier to think about what could happen if they are left unprepared. The 2nd Kick Abuse at Kickapoo 5K Trail Run and Fun Walk took place April 19th with 215 runners and walkers, more than twice the participants of our first year. This year’s 2-loop course through the beautiful vineyards of Kickapoo Creek Winery was designed by Philip Lockwood and evoked the feel of high school cross-country races, according to some participants. Timing was donated this year by Jerry Reibling of River City Race Management. Kickapoo Creek Winery offered a brunch to participants and their families after the race, offering free wine tastings for participants. This event brought in over $15,000 for PRC, funds which will be used to help offset the cost of providing medical evaluations and support services to the over 400 children we will see this year. We would like to thank our sponsors and the community for supporting this great event! Scan this code fto see more event photos! Peoria Push Derby Dames Peoria Push Derby Dames, part of the Women’s Flat Track Roller Derby Association, chose the PRC as the beneficiary for their April 12th bout against the Prairieland Punishers. Many PRC Staff attended this fun and unique event. The PRC would like to thank the Peoria Push Derby Dames for raising $600 for PRC use in direct service to area children. PRC Night at the Chiefs The annual PRC night at the Chiefs was held on August 9th. Great Clips continued their support of the children served by PRC through their sponsorship of Strike Out Child Abuse, donating $50 to PRC for every strikeout by the Chiefs; and a Cut-A-Thon, giving haircuts for donations to PRC during the game. We were once again the beneficiaries of the Chiefs’ Pitch in for Charity and jersey auction, with the cost of the jerseys sponsored by an anonymous donor. Over $6,300 was raised for PRC services. Thank you to Great Clips, our jersey sponsor and the community for their continued support! Top Left: Evan Zdunek (1st Overall) and Andrew Steinmetz (2nd Overall) leading the pack. Details Inside! From the Community Advisory Board Everyone would agree that child abuse is a terrible tragedy that steals a child’s innocence. What everyone may not be aware of is the life-long effect child abuse can have if a child does not receive help that interrupts the abuse and provides a chance for healing and hope for an abuse-free life. The Pediatric Resource Center’s dedicated medical professionals and staff are daily striving to provide that help and be that vital interruption of abuse for these children. The PRC provided medical evaluations for 446 children in the fiscal year that ended in June, which is an increase of 78 children over the prior fiscal year. These medical evaluations assess each child’s health and can help document the abuse. These services are essential in helping families (and authorities) ensure that the child is in a safe environment. When a child is safe, the healing can begin. The PRC staff and advisory board desire that all abused children in our communities will have an opportunity for help and healing. The number of abused children served by the PRC has grown beyond our current medical, professional, and staff levels, creating an urgent need for additional funding. In response, the PRC advisory board has set a goal of $100,000 for our annual Harvesting Hope fundraiser. In order to accomplish this, we most certainly need your help! I invite each of you to purchase tickets and attend ‘Harvesting Hope’ which will be held on October 25, 2014 at the Jump Trading Simulation and Education Center. This will be a fantastic event with wonderful food, entertainment and many opportunities for you to support the PRC, including fabulous silent and live auction items. If you are unable to attend the event, please make a donation and together, let’s reach our goal to offer each and every child help and hope for an abuse-free life!! On behalf of the Community Advisory Board of the Pediatric Resource Center, I would like to thank each of you in advance for your donations. The world the PRC operates in is not a pleasant one. Our fundraising is on a small scale. That’s why your contribution plays such a vital role in maintaining and increasing financial support for the invaluable services the PRC provides. Kathy Miller, President Pediatric Resource Center Community Advisory Board
