Sports Dawg's, Bastrop’s new family-oriented sports grill and bar, opened “quietly” in December. The official Grand Opening and Ribbon Cutting ceremony will be on Thursday, January 27th from 4 – 7 PM with a happy hour and tasty treats. Located on Hwy 71 W, in front of WalMart and next to Schlotzsky’s, Sports Dawg’s is in the bright red building that used to be Cartwright’s BBQ. This establishment is owned and operated by Laura and Luke Merritt , who also own Schlotzsky’s, and is the brainchild of Laura and Bobbi Pyka. When you arrive, you are greeted, seated and provided a complimentary bowl of popcorn (free refills) while perusing the extensive menu of appetizers, Black Angus burgers, grilled sandwiches or salads. But that’s only if you bypass the signature “builda-dawg” hot dog starring “Snappy,” a white German-style hot dog made of veal, pork and spices. Served with spicy, brown mustard on a New England style bun, you finish dressing your “dawg” to suit your fancy. For the “puppies” (kids), there’s a special menu and a separate play area staffed by a child coordinator, childheight tables, a TV tuned to children’s shows, toys, games, puzzles and arts & crafts. Parents can relax and enjoy their favorite beverage, watch one (or more) of the 24 TVs or socialize and still keep an eye on the kids through the window-surrounded playroom. For warmer weather, there’s a patio dining area and a sandbox for the kids. For older “puppies” there are arcade games and a jukebox. Sports Dawg’s is still changing and growing, adding new menu items, looking for suggestions or comments. They’re planning some upcoming events like Super Bowl, the NBA All-Star game, March Madness, UFC Fight Nights and more. They’d also be delighted to accommodate your group get-together to cheer for a favorite team, celebrate a special event or just have a good time. Give them a call at 512-321-5700.
