Tasting on Saturday, March 31 was a
tremendous success. Celebrating our agricultural community at Merighi’s Savoy Inn, the
event featured fun, food, beer tasting, dancing,
door prizes—and of course, dandelions.
The BLT Band, back by popular demand,
kept the party going on the dance floor all night.
The primary event sponsor for the evening
was Capital Bank of NJ. A secondary sponsor
was the Root Sponsor, Compassionate Care
Hospice. Unique and delicious beer tasting
was provided by Allied Beverage Group and
Harrison Beverage. There were records set

Dinner & Beer Tasting event was another
fun time. My sincerest thanks to all the
member businesses who generously
donated door prizes, to Capital Bank of

every member of the committee for all of
their hard work. This was a historic success with the highest attendance ever of
450 people, selling out two weeks prior
to the event and a record number of
door prizes to give out. We are proud to
host this event each year to honor our

New Business Opens, Joins Chamber of Commerce
A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held on Thursday, March 29, to welcome a new business
to Vineland. Glamazon Salon is conveniently located at 907 N. Main Road – Suite 6 (in
Larry’s II complex). The salon is owned and operated by Rose Marie Campbell and
Kathleen Gift.

Bain’s Deli recently shut its doors. For the ceremony, the ribbon was tied instead of cutting it. Reversing the process from opening to closing and “preparing” it for the next business to take that space made the event a positive one. The deli celebrated five years of
business, and Bain’s will still be available for anyone interested in renting the space for
events, parties, etc. where they can bring in their own caterer.

• S1319 – Healthcare Exchange Act: This is the states-proposed plan for health
insurance exchanges under the mandates of the federal Patient Protection and
Affordable Care Act. Every state is required to develop its own exchange program or
join a regional one by 2014. If they don’t, the federal government will create an
exchange for them. We do not support this bill as it does not do enough to help smaller businesses cope with increasing premium costs, nor does it offer enough choice of
insurance plans. We communicated our position to our state legislators who also
opposed this legislation. UPDATE: This proposed bill won legislative approval and
now goes to Governor Christie for consideration. We will continue to oppose it and
offer revisions that will help businesses.
• The GVCC is supporting the proposed extension of a light rail system to
Glassboro, but requesting consideration for inclusion of the extension into
Cumberland County. We will keep you informed on the progress of these discussions.
• S3 – Minimum Wage Increase: Under this bill, the state is proposing a minimum
wage increase to $8.50/hour (currently at $7.25/hour). We conducted a survey of our
membership and on your behalf have opposed this bill at this time. Our position is
that this minimum wage increase may result in a reduction of workforce, stop plans
for new hiring, increase costs to customers, increase payroll taxes and workers compensation insurance as well as other negative impacts. We also do not agree with the
proposed future minimum wage increases being based on the Consumer Price Index
and want that completely removed from the bill.

• A883 – UEZ Sales Tax: This bill proposes that merchants in the Urban Enterprise
Zone program would have to charge the full 7 percent sales tax for goods delivered to
customers located outside the zone’s boundaries. We do not support this bill as it
would remove the primary goal to attract customers to the UEZ businesses in economically challenged urban areas.
CCC Group Organizes
“Cumberland Cares”
Members of Cumberland County
College’s Phi Theta Kappa honor society are
organizing the “Cumberland Cares” campaign to bring awareness to the issue of
domestic violence and sexual assault.
An Awareness Day is planned for
Wednesday, April 18, on CCC’s campus,
Sherman Avenue and College Drive. Phi
Theta Kappa seeks involvement from social
service agencies, civic organizations and
community members to provide education
and resources to those in attendance.
“Cumberland County College is an ideal
venue to provide education about domestic
violence,” said CCC President Dr. Thomas
Isekenegbe. “An open dialogue and exchange
of ideas are the first steps in raising awareness and stopping the cycle of abuse.”
Phi Theta Kappa’s awareness campaign
is in direct response to these grim statistics:
• Cumberland County has the highest rate
of domestic violence offenses in New Jersey;
• 3,831 incidents of domestic abuse were
reported in Cumberland County in 2010;
• Cumberland County has the highest
rate of Division of Youth and Family
Services (DYFS) referrals in the state, and
ranks second in the number of substantiated
child abuse cases;
• Cumberland County ranks third in the
number of out-of-home placements.
Two sessions are planned for the April 18
event; 2-4 p.m. will be geared toward students and the second, from 6:30 until 8:30
p.m. is open to the general public and will
conclude with a candlelight vigil. Each session will serve as a forum for the exchange
of ideas, offer assistance to persons in need,
bring awareness to the topic of domestic
violence and sexual assault, and encourage a
productive dialogue.
Recognizing the warning signs of at-risk
behavior, and bystander intervention are
two of the many topics that will be discussed. A collage that will include words
and images of victims and survivors of
domestic abuse is being created by CCC students. Community members are encouraged
to submit photos, artwork, printed imagery
and magazine clippings, poetry, prose, and
materials (such as denim) that appropriately convey their ordeal for inclusion in the
collage or to be published in a program
book. The public may also bring photos of
victims and survivors to the event that may
be included in a second collage.

Meet YMCA’s New Camp Director
The Vineland YMCA invites the community to prepare for the summer camp season
by meeting the Y’s new Camp director. All are

The YMCA’s summer camps feature
sports and specialty camps with topics
ranging from glamour and firefighting to
soccer and basketball. New theme weeks for
2012 will include titles such as “Superhero
Training” and “America Rocks.”

Baby-Friendly USA, Inc is the U.S. authority for the implementation of the BabyFriendly Hospital Initiative (“BFHI”), a global program sponsored by the World Health
Organization (WHO) and the United Nations
Children’s Fund (UNICEF). The initiative
encourages and recognizes hospitals and
birthing centers that offer an optimal level of
care for breastfeeding mothers and their
babies. Based on the Ten Steps to Successful
Breastfeeding, this prestigious international
award recognizes birth facilities that offer
breastfeeding mothers the information, confidence, and skills needed to successfully initiate and continue breastfeeding their babies.
SJH is a nonprofit, integrated health care
system, providing access to a continuum of
health services. SJH provides hospital services, numerous community health clinics,
home health services, and specialty services,
which serve the medical and health care

WheatonArts Returns to
Six-Day Schedule
WheatonArts returns to a six-day operating
schedule beginning April 3. The arts organization will be open Tuesday through Sunday,
10 a.m. to 5 p.m., through December 31, 2012.
The special narrated shows in the Glass
Studio resume at 11 a.m., 1:30 p.m. and 3:30
p.m. The Ceramics Studio is open from 10
a.m. to 1 p.m. and 2 to 5 p.m. The
Education/ Folklife Center will present a
new exhibit, “Traditional Costumes of the
Balkans,” when it reopens on June 1.
Appointments for the “Make Your Own”
Experiences (Glass and Pottery) also
resume this month.

Benchmark recently completed phase I in a project for Cornell Steel of Westville,
NJ. Working in collaboration with Pinnacle Control Systems, Benchmark designed,
engineered, programmed and installed an Energy Management System project with
the goal to reduce Cornell’s energy consumption and carbon footprint. They
removed 12 standard efficiency exhaust fans and replaced them with three high efficiency turbo exhaust fans that work in conjunction with a set of dampers at the
opposite end of the fabrication shop to move air to cool, remove smoke and any elevated levels of CO2 and/or CO. The system is fully automated with capabilities of
monitoring each effecting factor and cycling the fans as needed. This newly
designed system will result in a 75 percent reduction in energy consumption. The
Energy Management System also allows control of the lighting, air conditioning and
heating by using a time of day and temperature strategy. This will enable the system
to cycle all loads only as needed, saving money for their customer and saving the
