“I'll never forget the first time I saw Wheels of Success
on the news, presenting a vehicle to an individual in
need. It brought tears to my eyes & made me think ‘I
wish I could do that’. Well, looks like I'm getting my
wish... we've donated a vehicle, and I’m also able to
offer my support as a sponsor and board member.”
– Anne Peterson
Anne Peterson is a local financial advisor with Ameriprise
Financial. As a financial advisor, Anne helps people by first
helping them identify their dreams. Once dreams and goals have
been established, she works with them to understand where they
are now in relation to those dreams. She then helps them plan to
achieve their financial goals through goal based planning, asset
optimization, goal based solutions and goal tracking.

elcome to the Wheels of Success 2nd Annual
R.A.C.E. Event & Hub Cap Awards. Because of your support
and generosity, Wheels of Success provides a full range of
transportation solutions for low and moderate income working
families, including vehicle replacement; car repair; and
licensing, car payment, and down payment assistance. We
continue to be Tampa Bay’s only 501(c)3 nonprofit organization
doing just that. To date, Wheels of Success has helped more
than 250 families since its inception in 2003; 125 in the last
year alone. This is in large part due to the addition to our staff
of Karen Olsen, made possible by a matching grant provided by
the Children’s Board of Hillsborough County.
We are here to recognize and show our appreciation
for the many volunteers who make this happen; for all the
champions here today — including clients and our partnering
businesses, government agencies, nonprofit organizations, and
a crew of volunteers. We want to publicly thank each and every
one of you.
Today, revel in the knowledge that your support “pays it
forward” time and time again. Enjoy your table company, “win”
a few items in our Silent Auction, meet the faces of Wheels of
Success and if you like what you see, we hope you will support
our work with a donation today.
Thank you for your support today, tomorrow, and
throughout the coming years.
Yours in appreciation,
I am licensed and registered to conduct business in FL. Based on licenses and
registrations I hold, I may also conduct certain business in GA, IA, and WY.

THE PROBLEM
Tampa is the highest cost metropolitan city in the country for transportation costs.
Forty percent of the working poor’s income is spent on transportation as opposed
to 24.6 percent of the general population’s. The bus system is often not adequate,
running infrequently and with very few routes, or does not run in the evening or on
holidays when many hospitality employees work. Parents working until 5:00 p.m.
and taking a bus (or busses) to pick up their children from daycare find it almost
impossible to get there by the 6:00 p.m. deadline.
FPO
O NE S OLUTION
Help families continue to work, or obtain employment, by providing reliable
transportation through a program of car repairs, vehicle replacement, related
licensing services, car payments, down payments and car-care classes. Wheels of
Success does just that for residents in Hillsborough, Pasco, and Pinellas counties.

Wheels of Success is dedicated to providing personal
transportation solutions by partnering with the community in a circle of support to keep people working
and sustain their independence. Incorporated as a
nonprofit organization in June 2003, Wheels of
Success has provided 250 families with assistance.
Seventy-five percent of the assisted families have received vehicles.

Clients receiving a vehicle “buy” it from the program by making monthly payments
based on ability to pay, as well as donating five service hours per month to the
organization. These payments enable our clients to make a difference and help
Wheels of Success to keep rolling and serving others.
Wheels of Success offers working families the resources needed to keep their lives
from skidding out of control!

M EET SHELTON QUARLES:
R.A.C.E. EVENT HONORARY CHAIR
In September 2007, Florida Governor Charlie Crist named
Shelton Quarles chairman of the Tampa Bay Area Regional
Transportation Authority (TBARTA). As chairman, he leads
a seven-county, 15-member board with a mission to build a
transportation master plan over the next two years to tackle the
significant transportation issues facing the greater Tampa Bay area.
Like all members of the TBARTA board, Shelton serves in a volunteer capacity.
After 10 seasons (1997-2006) as a linebacker for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers,
Shelton is a pro scout for the organization. In 2007, his first season in the front
office, Shelton helped guide the Buccaneers to the NFC South division title.
Shelton is one of the most philanthropic figures in the Tampa Bay area. Since its
inception in 2004, the Shelton Quarles IMPACT Foundation has been supporting
at-risk youth and their families through assistance, programs, and events designed
to build self-esteem, provide unique life-changing opportunities, and help set and
achieve life goals.
Shelton is married to Damaris. The couple resides in Tampa with their children.
R.A.C.E. Master of Ceremonies: Jack Harris
Wheels of Success is pleased to welcome back Jack Harris as
this year’s R.A.C.E. master of ceremonies! Without a doubt, Jack
Harris is the most popular and most recognized media personality
in Tampa Bay. When he is not hosting WFLA 970’s highly rated
morning show — A.M. Tampa Bay — Jack is a fixture in the community; lending his time, talent, and treasures to make Tampa Bay a
better place to live and work. Be sure to join Jack Harris every weekday morning
from 5:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. at 970 on your AM dial. And when you see him again,
please thank him for his support of Wheels of Success.

rom start to finish, AAA Auto Club South is
Wheels of Success’ Crew of the Year; an honor received for the
second consecutive year! In addition to taking an active role on the
Wheels of Success board of directors and committee work,
AAA Auto Club South continues to provide free auto club
memberships to Wheels of Success clients for their first year of car
ownership and the towing services necessary to retrieve many of our
donated cars. This year, AAA Auto Club South introduced Hertz
to our organization, who in turn donated a vehicle they allowed
Wheels of Success to sell. The proceeds from this one vehicle
provided enough money to repair 12 cars — putting 12 families
back on the road and keeping them working.
“When everything else fell through
and no one else took an interest,
Wheels of Success rescued us. Not
only can I get to work and run out for
milk unexpectedly, but now I can drive
to economical places to shop, transport
myself to the doctor, and be 24/7 ready
to respond to family emergencies.”

ntil a partnership was formed with Rent A Wheel
through an introduction by Wheels of Success board member
Pete Nelson, the organization was purchasing tires at retail or a
minimal discount. Rent A Wheel generously donated more than
$2,000 worth of tires, as well as balancing and alignment services.
Rent A Wheel’s former owner Che Hatcher was a good friend to
Wheels of Success and this appreciation is illustrated by naming
him and his Rent A Wheel business as the Wheels of Success
“Rookie of the Year.”

- Patti, single mother of three who “pays

need to support themselves and businesses throughout Tampa Bay.
Patti says the stability gained from having dependable transportation
and a reliable, affordable mechanic allowed her to regain custody of
her youngest child.

iane Jamai is never too busy to try and connect
someone with a person or group that she thinks might help; and she
consistently does this for Wheels of Success. She not only makes
contact, but follows through to ensure there has actually been a
connection! Her volunteer service to Wheels of Success is in
addition to her full-time job with the City of Tampa, management
of her own nonprofit walking club “The Right Fit 4 U,” and
participation in numerous other community groups and agencies.
Diane has been an integral part of the organization since its
inception in 2003. She has served on the board of directors and
currently lends her expertise and leadership skills to the Wheels of
Success Advisory Board.

“I never thought I would have to resort to using the same community
resources I provided my [client] families with for myself until I
received the information about Wheels of Success. Riding the bus
in less than favorable weather conditions with a baby had begun
taking its toll on me. Wheels of Success provided a very nice car
without the hassles of humiliation or red tape. My personal
circumstance was finally being considered and I would be able to
perform my job task without wondering how I would get from one
place to the next.”
- Lori, a single working mother working as a social services
professional; a job where reliable transportation is a must. Before
Wheels of Success, Lori was providing community resources to
families throughout Pinellas County without a vehicle, depending on
public transportation to complete her basic job duties.

aspers Company/McDonald’s was Wheels of Success
first employer partner two years ago! Allison Casper Adams,
owner-operator of 52 McDonald’s restaurants in Hillsborough,
Pasco, and Pinellas keenly understands how transportation, or lack
thereof, impacts the work force; and how essential it is for people
wanting to move up in many companies to have their own car.
Caspers Company/McDonald’s provides funds that enable Wheels
of Success to repair donated vehicles and other support that fuels
the fundamental operation of the organization. Through the
Caspers-Wheels partnership, 18 families have received a variety of
transportation assistance. Of those 18 recipients, 15 have been
promoted because of having reliable transportation.
A partial reprint fromThe Tampa Tribune published April 28, 2007:
“When Kacelia Clark pulled the early shift at work, she never left
before saying a prayer. The longtime McDonald’s employee knew
her 4 a.m. walk along busy Fletcher Avenue was dark and dangerous. The mother of two had no car, no bus to ride and no choice if
she wanted to keep her job. ‘I’d pray every day,’ she said, ‘I would
pray before I went outside to make sure I got to work.’”
- Kacelia’s fear of the pre-dawn trek ended when through Wheels of
Success she purchased her first vehicle. Shortly after her purchase
of a white 1997 Ford Taurus, Kacelia was named an assistant manager of the restaurant.

heels of Success
has changed my life I heard
about this program from my dad
who listens to talk radio. He told
me to try it and see if they can
help. At that time I had two cars
that did not run, and no hope of
getting them fixed. I filled out the application and told my bosses,
Donna Kanabay and Sandi Ambush, about what I had found. Susan
called to speak to Donna to verify employment and income, and soon
after that I was on the waiting list for a car — and not just any car. Susan
took the time to listen to what I needed. As a single mother of two
young children (preschool age) and a job that required me to transport
boxes of supplies, I needed something big. My first car was a van. I
loved the van! It was perfect for me! I had the van for almost a year,
and then the transmission went. I figured they were going to tell me,
“Sorry, we did all we could.” But they didn’t! They helped me find yet
another car! With a donation from my bosses and the caring service
from Wheels of Success, I now have an SUV that I think I love more
than my van!
I can’t even imagine where I would be without this help. It is very freeing and liberating to get in your car and go and not have to wait for a
bus or call somebody for a ride; to just be able to say to my kids,
“come on guys, let’s go,” and be able to go. It has made me feel independent as a mother, as an employee and as a person.
— Jenny
Page 14
J
enny started with Kanabay Court Reporters as a part-time
employee in the billing/shipping department three years ago. When
we lost an employee in a similar position, we made her a full-time
employee and increased her duties substantially. These duties include
shopping for and stocking supplies in our three locations. Jenny also
has to be able to move, at a moment’s notice, between our Clearwater
and Tampa offices. Her job also requires her to deliver transcripts to
clients. There is simply no way to plan for these events and Jennie has
to have ready access to reliable “wheels.”
When Wheels of Success first called me to verify Jenny’s employment
and income, they were concerned Jenny didn’t earn enough to qualify
for covering the vehicle expenses, so we gave her a raise to cover that.
Then, Jenny was still hourly. Due in large part to Wheels’ assistance,
Jenny has become such an indispensable part of our operation that at
the first of this year, we made her a salaried employee, complete with
paid vacation and personal time. As you can imagine, going from
hourly, where we didn’t have to pay her for time she needs to take care
of her children’s emergencies or other personal matter, to full salary,
cost the company a fair amount of money. We felt she earned it and
that as a company, we needed to take this step.
I know Wheels of Success is, to a very large degree, responsible for
Jenny’s personal, professional, and emotional growth. It is a pleasure
and a joy to watch this young, insecure, scared and broke young girl
who came to work for us blossom into a confident, secure, poised
young woman.
