SPIRIT OF THE WEST
N
earing the three-and-a-half decade
mark, Spirit of the West continues
to rock audiences with their
original and potent blend of Folk,
Celtic, Rock, Pop and Punk. The band that
began in 1983 as an innocent trio of acoustic
guitar, flutes and bouzouki is now a musical
and performance powerhouse that features 6
musicians and dozens of instrument changes
in a nights’ worth of timeless and beloved
songs.
With 13 albums to their credit, five of them
gold and three platinum, a history of extensive
touring throughout the western world, and
the authorship of a drinking song “Home
For a Rest”, so well known and loved that
it is often called ‘Canada’s unofficial national
anthem’, Spirit of the West’s legacy has grown
to legendary status.
Fan favourites such as ‘And if Venice is Sinking’,
‘Save This House’, ‘Puttin’ Up with the Joneses’
and the quintessential drinking song ‘The
Crawl’ have etched themselves into the
soundtrack of youth of several generations of
Canadians.
3
In recognition of Spirit’s long career they have
been inducted into the Hall of Fame of the
Western Canadian Music Association, have
received the National Achievement Award
from the Society of Composers, Authors and
Music Publishers of Canada, and were, in 2014,
presented with a star in Vancouver’s ‘Starwalk’,
located on Theatre Row on Granville Street.
The band consists of John Mann (vocals);
Geoffrey Kelly (vocals, guitar, flutes, whistles,
bodhran); Hugh McMillan(vocals, basses,
nearly all other stringed things on Earth);
Tobin ‘The Gull’ Frank (basses, accordion,
keyboards); Matthew Harder (vocals, guitars)
& Vince Ditrich (vocals, drumkit, percussion,
management, refreshment coordination).
Spirit enjoys a brilliant technical crew that is
well worthy of mention: Chris Hibbins (FOH
Mix/Tour Management) & Andre Arsenault
(Stage Management/Guitar Tech).

THE PAPERBOYS
T
his award winning, critically
acclaimed band serves up a heady
blend of country-folk-celticbluegrass-rock with a traditional bit
of Mexican music thrown in there for good
measure.
Lead singer, Tom Landa, was born in Mexico
to a Canadian mother of Irish ancestry – thus
accounting for at least two of his musical
influences – he later moved to Canada where
he founded the Paperboys in 1992. The
band’s sound has evolved a lot since the early
days. It now includes a 3 piece horn section
and digs deep into Tom’s Mexican heritage
by adding Son Jarocho and Afro-Mexican
grooves to the mix.
5
The Paperboys are renowned for their
energetic live performances and have wowed
festival goers the world over. They create a
buzz wherever they play and it is no wonder
with Tom Landa’s richly expressive vocals
backed up by a medley of whistle, flute, banjo,
percussion, guitar and jarana (a small Mexican
guitar.)
The lively jigs and reels are sure to get
you moving, so get your dancing shoes on
and prepare for an exhilarating evening of
entertainment.

THEATRE
T
he Betrayed Wife. The Scheming
Wife. The Peacemaker. The Ugly
German. The Slutty One. The One
in Love with Someone Else. Six
Queens. Six Love stories. Six Deaths. One
Actress!
It all starts in the afterlife, in a bizarre waiting
room of sorts. One by one, the wives
of Henry VIII arrive, much to the shock
and dismay of each previous wife. What
culminates is the heated frenzy of an ex-wives
club where these women swap stories, toss
Anne Boleyn’s head around, pick on the ugly
German one and, most importantly, fight for
the right to be acknowledged as Henry’s true
bride and eternal partner.
But when Henry arrives…everything changes.

The
Lunchbox
Life’s a Breeze
Dir.: Ritesh Batra
Country: India
Irrfan Khan (Life of Pi,
Slumdog Millionaire) stars
alongside the radiant
Nimrat Kaur in Ritesh Batra’s delightful feature debut, in which
a mistaken lunchbox delivery paves the way for an unlikely
romance. Whether it’s the cooking of a meal, the reading
of a letter, or the riding of a crowded train, the film’s small
moments culminate in big impact. In a word: enchanting.

Like Father,
Like Son
Dir.: Hirokazu Koreeda
Country: Japan
This poignant new drama
from acclaimed Japanese
director Hirokazu Kore-Eda
tells the heart wrenching story of two sets of parents whose
worlds are turned upside down when they learn that their
six-year-old sons were switched at birth.
Like the work of a seasoned symphony conductor, KoreEda’s direction is at once gentle and powerful, favouring small,
tender moments over a single dramatic incident.

Tracks
Dir.: John Curran
Country: UK/Australia
In 1977, a twenty-sevenyear-old Australian woman
named Robyn Davidson
(Mia Wasikowska) set out
from Alice Springs to walk 2,700 kilometres of harsh desert
to the Indian Ocean, accompanied only by her dog and four
camels. She ultimately wrote about her desert adventure in
her 1980 book Tracks, which became a cult favourite around
the world and has now been beautifully adapted for the big
screen by director John Curran.
Dir.: Lance Daly
Country: Ireland/Sweden
Life’s a Breeze is a feel-good
recession comedy about
a family struggling to stay
afloat and together through hard times in Ireland. In this
delightful comedy from director Lance Daly a Dublin family
races to recover their grandmother’s mattress - and its hidden
stash of over a million euros in carefully squirreled-away savings.

We Are the Best!
Dir.: Lukas Moodysson
Country: Swed./Den.
WE ARE THE BEST! is
Moodysson’s adaptation of
his wife Coco’s graphic novel
about three young misfits growing up in early ‘80s Stockholm,
who despite having no instruments, or discernible musical talent,
put all their energy into forming an all-girl punk band. With tender
affection for his young characters and the period in which his
film is set, Moodysson paints an ebullient and sharply observant
portrait of DIY spirit and growing up different.
