Do what needs to be done. Term Three Week Two Friday, July 29 Principal’s Report Dear Parents and Carers, This week I can announce we have maintained the student numbers under enrolment and staffing policies to have another teaching position attached to the school for the remainder of the year. This position will be maintained next year and I do think we will go close to another on top of that in 2017. At this point in time, we do not wish to form another class as it would disrupt the cohesive groupings we have already and would not make a big difference to class numbers, given the size of our school, anyway. Instead, we will use the new position to provide support through a couple of specific areas - literacy in Stage 1, mathematics in Kinder and in providing writing extension through Years 3 to 6. This will reduce numbers and increase contact at specific times for students across the school and provide the support required to move towards their potential. I also hope to be able to finalise the position (i.e. who will be filling it) by early next week. Next Tuesday we have our P&C meeting at 6pm in the library. Two things I will be looking to raise and have discussion around: I am writing this morning from a presentation (soon) by Peter Kenyon from the Bank Of Ideas. Peter is a community builder and travels the world assisting community groups in becoming more powerful in the way they operate and in building resources to use what they have to get what they want. Kate Mackay (P&C President) and Linda Hieke (Stage 2 Assistant Principal) are attending with me and will add to the discussion; and homework - I want to start a conversation around how we best support families and the school in providing a whole and balanced educational experience, supporting student learning, whilst also enabling families to lead a fulfilling and happy family life. From the conversation we have at the meeting, I am going to run a survey for all families to be able to have an input into our continued discussion as we evaluate our policies for next year. I have had some outstanding feedback since our return to school for Term 3 specifically regarding the "feeling" people get when they enter the school and also the "happiness" that people witness when they come in and visit, for various reasons, the classrooms and activities that occur in our daily school life. It is a credit to our staff and students that this is so evident and the school really is a nice place to be around. We can never say there won't be upsets or dissatisfaction with some things or students having problems with each other but we do hope we are responsive in addressing any of these. The key is communication and we have certainly found through our PBL programs that the conversations we have as a class group or within peer support enable students to have a voice and to tackle issues proactively. It is a delight to walk through our corridors and we certainly have great things happening in our classrooms. It certainly does make a school a really nice place to be. Have a great week and remember to look after each other. Assembly Times Regards, Kevin Greaves Maitland Public School 1 August Primary Assembly @ 2:25pm 8 August Infants Assembly @ 2:25pm 15 August Primary Assembly @ 2:25pm 22 August Whole School Assembly @ 2:25pm Premier Reading Challenge Premier’s Reading Challenge Just a reminder that the Premier’s Reading Challenge finishes on the 19 th August. By this time all students in Years 3-6 should have read 20 books and have entered them online. Most students have been borrowing the Premier’s Reading Challenge books from our library for their stage. Green sticker for Stage Two and orange sticker from Stage Three. Some students have been going to Maitland City Library and borrowing their Premier’s Reading Challenge books and this is wonderful. Remember if your child is struggling to independently read the appropriate books for their stage you can read with them. Reading can be done in lots of different ways. Read a page together, parent read one page and student read the other or read the whole book to your child and talk about what is happening. By doing this your child is exposed to the book language appropriate to their age group and it gives them lovely opportunities to hear great reading role models. Keep reading everyone!
