Happy New Year, Residents and
Families,
It’s hard to believe that 2012
has already come and gone. As we
say farewell to 2012 I want to
thank the many residents and
families who made donations to
our employee appreciation fund.
Our staff truly appreciates the
generosity and appreciation
shown to them by our families
and residents.
To me, the start of a new year is
exhilarating. It is a time to set new
goals in both our professional and
personal lives. It is a time when
we are reminded that almost any
goal is within reach if we remain
determined to accomplish it
throughout the year. It is also a
time when we can take inventory
of our lives and refocus our efforts
on being a little kinder, a little
more selfless, and a little more
dedicated to meaningful and
worthy causes.
The author of Man’s Search for
Meaning, Victor Frankl said, “What
man actually needs is not a
tensionless state but rather the
striving and struggling for some
goal worthy of him. What he
needs is not the discharge of
tension at any cost, but the call of
a potential meaning waiting to be
fulfilled by him.”
Belmont Village of San Jose has
many opportunities available for
those interested in taking on
Victor Frankl’s challenge. If you
are interested in achieving new
physical fitness goals, we invite
you to participate in our daily
exercises classes and to make use
of the exercise equipment on the
4th floor in our Center for Life
Enhancement. If you are looking
for opportunities to stretch and
challenge your mind, work to
attend as many MBA (Mind Body
Awareness) activities as possible.
If you would like to take a step
out of your comfort zone and
make new friends, we challenge
you to attend the many activities
and social events held throughout
the month in our building.
2013 promises to be a
rewarding and fulfilling year at
Belmont Village of San Jose. As we
seek to focus on “striving and
struggling for worthy goals,” I am
confident we will find ourselves
happier and feeling more fulfilled.
Happy New Year,
Scott Ambrose

**Capturing
the Moments**
**COF News**
During the month of January
the Circle of Friends residents and
staff will be learning about outer
space. We will discuss stars, the
Earth and its moon, space
shuttles, and the NASA program.
We also plan to make special trips
to the NASA Ames Research
Center and the De Anza
Planetarium. In addition, be sure
to come observe some out of this
world art displayed on the
2nd floor.
**Neighborhood News**
The Neighborhood residents
look forward to learning about
and celebrating some very special
people during the month of
January. We will discuss the lives
of Elvis Presley, Albert Einstein,
and Martin Luther King, Jr.
Everyone is looking forward to
talking about these individuals’
contributions to the world as well
as creating some beautiful and
unique portraits of them.
**DRCS News**
January is a month of much
recognition, celebrations and
remembrances: New Year’s Day,
Ben Franklin’s and Martin Luther
King Jr.’s birthdays, Inauguration
Day, plus many more. It can also
be a celebration of a new
beginning, a fresh start, a clean
slate. We often make a New Year’s
resolution in hopes of getting
healthier in the New Year. We
start eating healthier, exercising
and sometimes we start to notice
signs and symptoms of something
that is “just not right.” January
also recognizes National Eye Care
and Glaucoma awareness month.
Our eyesight is very important
to us; greater than 2.2 million
Americans age 40 and older have
glaucoma. There are no early
symptoms, sometimes people
have no symptoms at all, which
leads to over half of those affected
with glaucoma not even knowing
they have the disease. It is often
called a “sneak thief of sight.”
Glaucoma is an eye condition that
affects the optic nerve. The cause
is unknown; there is an increase in
eye pressure that pushes on the
optic nerve, causing damage to the
optic nerve. Once vision loss
occurs, the damage is already
severe, signs and symptoms or
loss of side (peripheral) vision or
tunnel vision. Advanced glaucoma
can lead to blindness.
There are four major types of
glaucoma:
• Open-angle glaucoma is the
most common, generally
runs in families, but there are
often no early symptoms.
• Angle-closure glaucoma—
you may experience severe
pain in one eye, cloudy
vision, red eye, or your eye
feels swollen.
• Congenital glaucoma
generally occurs when the
child is a few months old,
cloudiness in front of the eye
is noted, and enlargement of
one or both eyes.
• Secondary glaucoma is
caused by drugs such as
corticosteroids, systemic
diseases or trauma.
Early detection is imperative to
retaining healthy eye(s). A
complete eye exam is needed to
diagnosis glaucoma. Your
ophthalmologist or optometrist
can help detect this disease by
running a battery of eye tests,
including dilating your eyes and
using special lenses to look into
your eye. Treatment depends on
the type of glaucoma you have,
but most often includes eye drops,
laser therapy and/or oral
medication to reduce pressure.
Please let your nurse at
Belmont Village Wellness Center
know if you are experiencing any
signs or symptoms of glaucoma or
any other eye condition, so we can
assist you with setting up an
appointment with your specialist.
Start the New Year off right and
take care of yourself!
