GRANDVIEW CHILDREN’S CENTRE GRANDVIEW CHILDREN’S FOUNDATION Annual Report 2008 - 2009 www.grandviewcc.ca Alex’s charming smile says it all! Grandview has been the best support system possible for our entire family since he has been 15 months old. The staff, Preschool Outreach Program and workshops are phenomenal. Alex’s ‘treats’ include interactive music therapy (while Mommy is at support group) and his all-time favourite swimming lessons. There is no mistaking it when this good natured and funny child enters the building because of his happy giggles and exaggerated hand movements in anticipation of Tot n’ Me swimming lessons. Even when the visit is for something else, Grandview has always been a happy and secure second home for him. Alex continues to make impressive Vision Grandview Children’s Centre... leading the way to excellence in services for children and youth with special needs and their families in Durham Region. gains with his development thanks to everyone at Grandview - we don’t know what we would Mission Grandview Children’s Centre works with families and their children and youth with special needs to achieve their personal best. do without you! Broad Strategic Goals To provide a comprehensive range of timely services; defining and expanding the scope of services, consistent with the vision. To be a ‘Centre of excellence’ for best practice / evidence-based services, ethical research and education / training, in a safe environment. To be the leader in the integration of services through partnerships and collaboration. To relentlessly pursue and effectively manage the resources, including the best people and the necessary revenue to achieve goals. To have state-of-the-art facilities and technologies, which align with the vision and broad strategic goals. To be well recognized and respected by external and internal stakeholders. To be family-centred and family-empowering. “Grandview keeps the family actively involved and provides opportunities for input.” Annette Executive Director’s Report It’s hard to believe that two years have passed since I joined the Grandview Children's Centre team. I feel privileged to be working with such dedicated staff and volunteers who are focused on making a difference for children and youth with special needs and their families. I have great respect for our Board of Trustees, chaired by George Ryan, who contribute countless volunteer hours in their governance role and in so many other ways. We owe thanks to 5 MPPs who represent us at Queen’s Park and support the work we do: Wayne Arthurs and Joe Dickson from the Liberal party; Christine Elliott, John O’Toole and Jerry Ouellette from the PC party. They have each met with me on several occasions, including visits to Grandview. We are in a period of exciting opportunities. In recognition of our critical lack of space, the Ontario Ministry of Children and Youth Services (MCYS) has provided funds for planning a new expanded facility. Our vision is for one, multi-agency, multi-service children’s centre located more centrally in the Region. This vision has been driven by input we received from families, staff, volunteers, agencies and other stakeholders during our extensive strategic planning process. Check out our website at www.grandviewcc.ca for regularly updated details! Report of the Chair The other day I took a few minutes to look back at all the exciting things that have been going on at Grandview over the last year. Every month there were new initiatives or new opportunities to explore. From a Board perspective, two of the most interesting projects we worked on recently were a governance review and researching the potential for a new multi-service children’s centre. The governance review allowed us to analyze the Board’s roles and responsibilities. It has been an amazing process that will help the Board be more efficient and effective in the future. Last Fall the Ministry of Children and Youth We were sorry Dr. Mary MacDonald stepped down as Medical Director but pleased she continues as Developmental Paediatrician. Dr. Carolyn Hunt, previously in the Developmental Paediatrician role, accepted the Medical Director position. We are fortunate to have two dedicated and compassionate physicians on the Grandview team. Services (MCYS) provided funding for us to analyze We have strengthened our relations with other agencies. We are still early in the Another key achievement was the introduction of the new Family Facilitator position thanks to funds obtained from RBC Foundation. This position will help families network, provide insight into the parents’ perspective and assist families in many other ways. and decide if we will proceed. I am so pleased our space requirements and begin planning for a new facility. The Board selected an architectural firm and a consulting company to help define our process but so far it looks encouraging and we expect the analysis to be completed in the Fall. At that point we will review all the options and costs Unfortunately our wait lists and wait times continue to grow as demand increases and our budget is flat-lined. Staff are committed to providing quality services efficiently and introducing new initiatives that help us improve while we continue to advocate for additional funds from the Ontario Government (Grandview’s primary funder). A new facility would certainly provide new opportunities for more efficient service delivery. with the relationship we have with the MCYS Central East Regional Office. In over 25 years of working in healthcare I don’t think I have ever seen a more supportive group. Grandview Children’s Foundation is a group of committed and compassionate individuals who have worked hard over the years to help provide I am looking forward with enthusiasm to 2009-10 as we continue to plan for this new multi-service children’s centre and work together to help about 4,500 children and youth with special needs to achieve their personal best. funding for special needs and projects.
