Ulotka - Malbork

Transcription

Ulotka - Malbork
Malbork Castle, the town’s most important monument, is a masterpiece of
mediaeval defensive and residential architecture. This monumental Gothic building on the banks of the Nogat river still
charms and amazes with the severity of
its shapes, the mystery of its passages,
the depth of its moats and the span of its
thick defensive walls. The Teutonic castle
at Malbork is considered to be the world’s largest Gothic castle complex erected by human hand. The castle grounds
cover approximately 21 hectares. Every
year the castle is visited by half a million
tourists from all over the world. In 1997
the Malbork Castle complex was entered
on UNESCO’s prestigious list of World
Heritage Sites.
From the end of the 13th century onwards, the old town of Malbork was
served by a parish church dedicated to
John the Baptist. It was rebuilt on many
occasions, both in the Middle Ages and
in modern times. Its present architectural form dates from its rebuilding around 1468, when it was raised from ruins
following the Thirteen Years War. In the
19th century small tenement buildings,
serving the parish, were built around the
church. The most valuable movable assets in the interior include a mediaeval
sculpture of Saint Elizabeth of Turin
and a Neo-Gothic set of altars, as well
as a copy of a 17th-century picture of
the Virgin Mary venerated as guardian
of the town.
The mediaeval seat of the town authorities was on the eastern side of the
market square. The building was erected in its present form around 1380. It
was frequently rebuilt following damage
suffered during sieges of the town and
castle. A reminder of these works is the
late-Gothic southern gable. In the 19th
century the elevations underwent essential conservation work, and damaged
tracery was restored. Further renovation
followed a fire in 1899. The mayor and
town council were based in the building
until 1929, when the new town hall (now
the Town Offices) was opened. Only here
can we admire the famous Malbork arcades. Today the building is used as a
Youth Culture Centre.
The gate, built around the middle of the
14th century, was crowned in the 16th
century with a timber-framed extension, no longer in existence. It is one of
a small number of mediaeval town gates surviving in the northern regions of
Poland. Built in 1320–1330, the Gothic
gate is situated in the southern part of
the defensive walls. In 1945 it was burnt
to the ground, and the walls damaged
by artillery. It was rebuilt in 1964.
For many years the gate stood unused.
In the 1970s a café was opened there,
which required alterations in the interior
of the structure and the building of an
outer staircase. It now houses the Pub
Baszta.

Malbork Welcome Center – Malbork’s
tourist centre. The building dates from
around 1870. This two-storey villa, once
belonging to the Flatauer family of merchants, is one of the most interesting
structures at ul. Kościuszki (formerly Langgasse). Its shape, composed of
picturesquely differentiated asymmetric
elements, has been enhanced by Classicist architectural details, similar in form
to those used in the Masonic lodge and
villa at Muhlengasse 23. The grand spacious interiors of the ground floor are
decorated with high-quality stuccowork
with geometrical and floral motifs. The
modern tourist centre has been operating here since 1 April 2008.
The face of Malbork’s town centre underwent a change in 2009. At ul. Kościuszki there appeared a Town Square
with a fountain, which in an allusion to
mediaeval history forms the shape of a
knight’s shield and sword. The square
serves as a venue for numerous exhibitions, processions, fairs and street theatre shows, which make visitors’ stay in
the town more attractive. The main attraction here is undoubtedly the town fountain, where water from almost 50 nozzles “dances” in time to specially chosen
music. Daily shows, particularly those in
the evening, made more spectacular by
light effects, draw hundreds of interested
spectators in the summer season.
At ul. J. Piłsudskiego you can see Malbork Castle in miniature. This model is
made of more than a million specially
baked bricks. With a base measuring
11 x 5 metres, and built to a scale of
1:30, the model attracts both tourists
and residents of the town. This is one of
the features characterising of the modern pedestrian precinct. It lets you see
close-up how the Teutonic castle looked
before the damage it suffered during
the Second World War. A superb place
to take a souvenir photo of your visit to
Malbork.
The cruises on the Nogat river, including walks, are undoubtedly a major
attraction for tourists. The view of the
grand panorama of the Teutonic Castle
stretching from the riverside will take
your breath away, and provides a perfect
occasion to take beautiful photos of the
building. For small groups, both long
and short scenic cruises by motor yacht
can be arranged. For organized excursions, cruises by small passenger ships
are organized. In the near future, lovers
of water travel will be able to moor at
two modern marinas. Under the „Żuławy Loop Water Tourism Development”
project, Malbork will build two marinas
on the Nogat: one for passenger vessels,
and a second (called “North Park”) for
sailing boats.

Originating in France, ropes courses are
an ideal way of spending free time on
specially prepared terrain. Malbork’s
„Jumpy Park” provides entertainment
for both adults and younger lovers of
extreme sports. Everyone regardless of
age will be able to try out their strength
without fear, thus experiencing unforgettable fun, effort and adrenalin. At 1200
metres, it is one of the longest courses
in Poland. Special obstacles with various levels of difficulty, the green surroundings of the town park, and the possibility of spending free time in an active
way attract large numbers of seekers of
active leisure activity to the park every
day.
Malbork can boast multiple attractions
for lovers of sports. A rock-climbing
wall, tennis courts and sports pitches
with a special surface ensure that everyone will find something to do here. During the summer season a rock-climbing
wall is available, with a surface area of
approximately 100 square metres, measuring 11 metres wide and between
5.5 and 10.5 metres high. Climbers are
looked after by trained instructors. Tourists and residents can also make use
of tennis courts with a brick surface, and
a sports hall with special sports pitches
with a synthetic surface.
Malbork’s town ice rink operates during
the winter season, from November to
March. It attracts huge interest among
both young and older skaters. The rink,
measuring 20 x 40 metres, can be used
by 100 people at a time. Lessons are
also organized for beginner skaters.
Another new leisure facility for the town’s residents and tourists to enjoy is a
mini-golf course. This is a superb way of
spending free time in the fresh air, suitable for everyone regardless of age and
fitness. The course is open from May to
October. It has 18 holes with obstacles,
with a total length of 170 metres. Equipment is available on the spot at no extra
cost. You can order drinks while playing,
and a special play sandpit is provided for
the youngest children.

Siege of Malbork
An open-air event commemorating the events of 600 years
ago, when the victorious armies of King Władysław Jagiełło marched from the fields of Grunwald to attempt
to take the Teutonic Knights’ fortress at Malbork. During
the event, residents and visitors move back in time to the
atmosphere of the Middle Ages, with knightly exhibitions,
tournaments, a mediaeval craft fair, and fun activities for
everyone. The climax of the event is the evening reconstruction of the battle – an open-air spectacle based on
mediaeval history.
