The women’s professional team has defeated San Jose Cyberrays, Carolina Courage, Philadelphia Charge, and New York Power. But despite their efforts, the Washington Freedom has not done well against the leading teams, the Atlanta Beat and Boston Breakers. In the second half, midfielder Lindsay Stoecker finally put the Freedom on the board with a left-footed shot 18 yards out that soared past Breakers’ goalie, Karina LeBlanc, in the 63rd minute. However, Washington’s lead was short lived. Breakers’ defender, Heather Aldama, capitalized on a loose ball from 25 yards out, sending the ball into the top right corner of the net in the 66th minute. At the end of the second half, with a free kick at the top of the goal box, Mia tried to get the victory, but her shot flew high over the posts. Aldama’s goal secured the draw against the Freedom. The Freedom has a tough schedule ahead. It plays two away games against the Atlanta Beat and San Diego Spirit before returning to the capital for a doubleheader. Currently, a large number of these fans are very young. They enjoy the ambiance of the games, so they are likey to keep coming. Veteran players such as Mia Hamm attract many of these youngsters, but so are the rookies such as Casey Zimny. Casey Zimny signs authographs at RFK. Summer 2003 Professional D.C. United Soccer Ivanov Bolsters United’s Backline By Jonathan Nierman Any soccer fan who has attended a D.C. United game since the middle of May has had the opportunity to see an exceptional player from the Eastern European nation of Bulgaria plying his trade for the Black-and-Red. But I’m not talking about the one you’re probably thinking of. While Hristo Stoitchkov’s name and accolades are familiar to millions, it is his countryman, Galin Ivanov, who has aided in the fortification of the D.C. United goal, helping to make United’s defense the strongest in the league. Ivanov landed at D.C. United thanks to a player allocation the club acquired in the blockbuster December trade with the MetroStars that saw the departure of Eddie Pope, Richie Williams, and Jaime Moreno to the Big Apple. Prior to coming to the States, Ivanov played his club ball in the Bulgarian Premier League for eight seasons. Six of those were with CSKA Sofia, far and away the strongest team in Bulgaria. D.C. United’s Galin Ivanov in center (photo: Rafael Cristomo) He has also made five appearances on Bulgaria’s National Ivanov even got in on the attack in United’s June 21st match Team, including a pair of recent caps in UEFA Euro 2004 with the Revolution when he picked up his first assist of the year, feeding Stoitchkov a pass that his former CSKA Sofia qualifying games. teammate rifled into the net. Ivanov has all of the attributes one could desire in a defender. He has size (6’, 172 lbs.), speed, stamina, and toughness. While Ivanov may not be the flashiest or most creative player When his near-perfect positioning, smart passing, and undying on the field, there is no denying his skill level and knowledge composure are thrown into the mix, the result is an all-around of the game. He is a true professional who United is lucky to have. Hopefully his talent and experience will lead United player who simply oozes talent. back to the top. “If you don’t see the class in Ivanov, then you’re as blind as Stevie Wonder locked in a vault,” said United head coach Ray Hudson. “He plays with such poise and class; he plays on a different planet.” Nick Rimando Surpassing Last Year’s Performance Ivanov’s first MLS season didn’t get off to the kind of start he would have hoped, when he suffered a pre-season abdominal In less than half the 2003 season, Nick has hernia that forced him onto the operating table. Washington Soccer 3 Major League Soccer Professional Soccer 2003 Early Season Surprises By Thomas Grahame This was supposed to be a rebuilding year for the Chicago Fire, yet after a strong start, they stand among the top teams in the Eastern Conference. Gone from Chicago’s roster are speedy U.S. National Team’s forward Josh Wolff, long-time field general Peter Nowak, plus Dema Kovalenko and Hristo Stoitchkov. But the nucleus of U.S. National Team players, DaMarcus Beasley, Chris Armas, Carlos Bocanegra, Ante Razov and C.J. Brown, remains. Forward Razov scored 9 goals (leading the league) in just 9 games and rookie forward Damani Ralph has surprised by scoring 6. Replacing Nowak is Jamaican international Andy Williams, whose stock prior to the season can be judged by the price the Fire paid for him: only a conditional 2004 draft choice in a preseason trade with the Metrostars. Yet William’s 15 assists last year should have foretold his worth to the MetroStars. The Fire performance has given its fans quite a revelation. The Metrostars are also rebuilding this season. Tempermental stars Diego Serna and Mamadou Diallo are gone, along with veterans, Ross Paule, Rodrigo Faria, and Andy Williams, among several others. The big trade with D.C. United brought Eddie Pope, Jamie Moreno, and Richie Williams, but cost stalwart Mike Petke. Remaining was a small core, headed by U.S. National Team stars, Clint Mathis at forward, and Tim Howard at goalie. So how have the Metrostars managed to do so well? First, several newcomers 4 Washington Soccer excelled in midfield; and Honduran midfielder, Amado Guevara, distributes the ball intelligently. And of course, there is the indomitable Howard in goal whose stellar play for the U.S. National Team at the Confederations Cup may hasten his departure to a big European Club: perhaps Manchester United. Thus, New York fans have had a lot more to cheer about than originally anticipated. Chicago Fire’s DeMarcus Beasley (Photo:Jonathon Daniels) have stepped up. 19-year-old forward, Mike Magee (who scored 14 goals for the U.S. U-20 team in 2002), has scored five goals; Ricardo Clark, the second pick overall in the 2003 Superdraft, has In the Western Conference, the Los Angeles Galaxy does not have the record its supporters expected. But they should look a little closer: L.A. played its first 8 games on the road (4 losses, 4 ties) as their new home field stadium, the Home Depot Center, was being constructed. Now, they will finish the season playing most of their remaining games at home where they are tough to beat. Galaxy followers should look for L.A. to make a strong run at the Wizards and the Earthquake for the Western Conference Championship. Earthquakes Summer 2003 U.S. National Teams Confederations Cup a Good Warm Up for Gold Cup U.S. Women’s Soccer Preview By Thomas Grahame By Nathaniel Kraft The U.S. didn’t beat either the first or third place finishers in the World Cup, Brazil and Turkey, at the Confederation’s Cup (1-0 and 2-1 losses, respectively). The U.S. scored only one goal in three games (including the 0-0 draw with Camaroon). U.S. fans can easily live with these results: the U.S. isn’t yet one of the top five team in world soccer. Only about half of these players participated in Korea/Japan 2002. Overall, the U.S. played well against the best in the world. These three games helped Bruce Arena start identifying the players who will carry the U.S. to the 2003 Gold Cup and qualifiers for the Germany 2006. Let’s look at three groups of players. The U.S. women’s soccer team looks to defend its 1999 title in the 2003 World Cup beginning September 20. Due to the outbreak of the SARS virus in China, the United States was awarded the right to host the World Cup for the second consecutive tournament. The U.S. women will play in their opener on September 21 at RFK Stadium in Washington. First, there are those new-comers who increased their stock. If Tim Howard isn’t already a world class keeper, he soon will be. He reminds me of Kasey Keller 10 years ago: he has size, incredible reflexes, positioning, and great one-on-one ability. Next is center midfielder, Kyle Martino. Although he only played the last game and was cut down brutally early in the second half, he made a strong impression with his distribution, field generalship, and a nasty 25 yard shot that could easily have been a goal. He should have had at least one assist in the first half. It’s just one game, but Martino might be Claudio Reyna’s replacement when that day comes. Relative newcomers Steve Cherundolo and Carlos Bocanegra, both looked good in defense. Then there are players who could have done more. Defenders, Dan Califf and Corey Gibbs, displayed various (See U.S. Men on page 6) U.S. National (10) Aly Wagner (photo: soccer-shots.com) The squad’s other two matches in Group A will be September 25, at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia, Pa. and September 28, at Columbus Crew Stadium. The other members of Group A have yet to be determined. After serving as an assistant coach in 1995, April Hendrichs will step on to the field as head coach of the U.S. Team. Hendrichs, who was a player on the champion 1991 squad, will lead a team full of young stars and a core group of veterans. Brandi Chastain, Joy Fowcett, Judie Foudy, Mia Hamm and Kristine Lilly all played on the 1991 team and will be appearing in perhaps their last World Cup squad. The U.S. team possesses a potent attack led by Shannon MacMillan’s team-best 17 goals in 2002 and Cindy Parlow’s 11. Even while appearing in a limited number of matches, Tiffeny Milbrett netted nine goals while Hamm scored seven. U.S. National Team (photo: International Sports Images) (See U.S. Women on page 6) (U.S. Men-continued from page 5) weaknesses, and Chris Klein, at outside middie, has done better. Bobby Convey didn’t play badly overall, but he could easily have scored against Cameroon after his nifty one-two with Martino. Frankly, he has the potential to dominate games. It is beginning to look like his position may be outside midfield at the national team level, but then again, Convey is still just 20 years old. The 2003 Gold Cup teams are as follows: Brazil, Canada, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Jamaica, Martinique, Mexico, and the United States. The squad has posted an 8-1-3 record so far in 2003, including a 4-0-1 mark in matches played in the United States. Maryland College Soccer Women Terrapins Finish Strong By Matt Remsberg Talking about the end of season playoffs, Maryland coach, Shannon HigginsCirovski, said, “We were one of the best 16 teams in the country going up against a potential final four team. I think in some ways we knew that we could have been on the winning end of that game, but now we’re just drawing on it to help us during the spring.” Photo of the Maryland Sports Information Department The unranked University of Maryland women’s soccer team suffered a loss to Penn State, and their midseason record was an unexciting 7-5. But the Terrapins re-energized, and the last half of the season saw them with a 4-1-1 record, including their first win against soccer powerhouse North Carolina in 19 matches. Ending the season as No. 16, the Terrapins made it to the NCAA tournament. In the second round - when the Terrapins met Penn State’s Nittany Lions again - the hot-streak ended as Maryland lost 1-2 to Penn State. Maryland’s (5) Jen Biscoe The new strategy is, according to HigginsCirovski, experimenting with formations. She said, “We need to be able to play in a myriad of formations to react to our opponent and be comfortable making certain changes.” Some of the changes that improved the Terrapins fate included putting junior Kristen Barnhill as goalkeeper for the second half of the season. Without a senior in the starting lineup, one of six freshmen emerged to take their place. Among that group of sensational freshmen were the first two ever named to the ACC All-Freshmen team, back, Mallory Mahar, who was anchor for the defense, and forward, Ali Andrzejewski, who ended the year as the team’s leading scorer with 20 points. After its best season since 1996, the women Terrapins are ready to build on this year’s results and move deeper into the NCAA tournament. The new year looks promising, as the Terrapins welcome two more budding first-year talents to their roster in Fall 2003 with highly touted incomers, Ashly Kennedy, goalkeeper, and Anna Sheveland, midfield. In 2000-2002, Montgomery College won the local Regional Championship and a few years ago, in 2000, it made it to the “Final Four” Nationals. The 2002 campaign marked the first winning season in four years for the Patriots, and seven starters return as head coach, Fran O’Leary, begins his third year in Fairfax. The Patriots got off to a strong start and finished the 2002 season with an 8-7-4 overall record and a 3-4-2 mark in the Colonial Athletic Association. A pair of Irish imports were the most decorated team members last season. They both return to lead George Mason into a new campaign, one which is highlighted by nine games against teams that participated in last season’s NCAA Tournament. Newcomers played a large role in the success of the Patriot offense in 2002, contributing 19 of George Mason’s 28 goals (67.9 percent) and 13 of the 28 assists (46.4 percent). Sophomore striker, Steve Alabi, who earned All-CAA second-team honors, led the club with eight goals and 17 points, while sophomore midfielder, Sean Malee, added two goals and junior David Quinn (a transfer) contributed four assists to rank second on the team. Junior, John O’Hara, returns for his third season as Mason’s starting goalkeeper after being ranked nationally for goalsagainst average for much of the season (as high as fifth in the nation) and earning All-CAA and All-Virginia first-team honors and being selected to the All-South Atlantic Region second team. O’Hara posted a 1.05 GAA and seven full shutouts (sharing another) with 81 saves in 19 games. Among the veterans, senior midfielder, Mirza Kurspahic, had two goals and three assists. Climo led the Patriots with five assists. Another local product from McLean High School, Kurspahic, became Mason’s leader in the midfield last season and was one of only three Patriots to start all 19 games. “We are looking forward to the season and are excited at the prospect at playing one of the most competitive schedules in the nation,” said O’Leary, who enters his 15th season overall as a head coach. “We have a terrific facility for soccer and I am delighted to welcome six of last year’s NCAA Tournament teams to George Mason Stadium.” Sophomore defender, Damian O’Rourke, is the other Irishman returning to help lead the Patriots. O’Rourke was the CAA Rookie of the Year and a second-team all-conference pick in addition to being a second-team All-Virginia choice and a thirdteam Freshman All-American by College Soccer News. He showed his value to the club as he moved forward on set plays and contributed three goals and three assists to rank tied for second on the team with nine points. Returning starters, senior Keith Nakai (an Oakton High School graduate) and junior Danny Climo, helped O’Hara and O’Rourke anchor a George Mason defense which allowed just 21 goals in 19 games (the fewest goals allowed since 1990). The Patriots had eight shutouts, four against CAA opponents, and blanked CAA champion, Virginia Commonwealth, in a 0-0 tie in Fairfax. Roosevelt High’s Girls’ Soccer Successful on the Field and in the Classroom By Greg Wilson In comparison to the surrounding counties, girls’ soccer in Prince George’s County is relatively new. Since its inception in 1990, the Eleanor Roosevelt Raiders girls’ soccer team has been a dominant force, capturing 7 county titles. Within the past three years, however, this team has really come into its own. They won 3 county championships, 2 regional championships, and they even made it to the state final. Although the minimum G.P.A. to play sports in the state of Maryland is 2.0, the Eleanor Roosevelt girls’ soccer team shatters that standard each year. In 2002, all 18 varsity players received the “Minds in Motion” award, which is given to athletes who receive a 3.0 G.P.A. or higher. The team’s G.P.A. average was 3.63, the highest of any team at the school. The Eleanor Roosevelt girls’ soccer team has found success both on the soccer field and in the classroom. Last year, the Raiders scored 54 goals while only allowing 5. Lauren Maisel led the team with 10 goals and 3 assists, while Nicole Jacobs and Kairsten Nunn, who split time in goal, recorded 12 shut-outs. No one scored against Roosevelt in the entire county the whole season - a team goal that the girls set at the beginning of the season. Their coach, Kathy Lacey, credits the girls’ success to their closeness, hard work ethic, and good team defense. Since the Raiders’ four starting backs graduated this year, a major focus for 2003 will be rebuilding their defensive power. Coach Lacey plans to move some of her players around to see if she can find another cohesive unit. The team has its eyes set on winning a state title, and the coach hopes one or more players will step up and become leaders both on and off the field.
