What a great year - CPFJ live music presentations included our annual Spring Concert Series, which featured great performances by bassist Christian McBride's Trio (Christian Sands, piano & Ulysses Owens, Jr., drums) at the Sheraton in Harrisburg; York native saxophonist Chris Bacas returned home to lead a concert with his Voyage West ensemble featuring German vibraphonist Stefan Bauer at the beautiful new Wyndridge Farm facility in Dallastown; and the gifted vibraphonist Steve Nelson brought his Quartet to the Rose Lehrman Auditorium at Harrisburg Area Community College. CPFJ continued the tradition of featuring talented area youth jazz ensembles as the opening acts for the concert series - the Fingers Supersax Ensemble from the Inspire School for the Arts contributed an excellent program in March. Our thanks to the Shearer Family Fund of TFEC for underwriting the Spring Series since 2012. The 2015 Central PA Jazz Camp was generously underwritten by the Olewine Family Fund and scholarships came from Penn National Insurance, Phoenix Design, The Hall Foundation and other private donors. Thanks to Camp Administrator Dr. William Stowman and his staff, Messiah College, our music faculty including Helen Sung and Jonathan Ragonese, and to all who contributed to the most successful Central PA Jazz Camp in our history. A great time was had by all 90 students! In May of 2015 we partnered with Jump Street and the Harrisburg Arts Foundation to present live jazz eight hours a day at the annual Patriot News Arts Festival over Memorial Day weekend. Area and international artists were featured and there were thousands of people in Harrisburg’s Riverfront Park to hear the music. The 35th Annual Central PA Jazz Festival was one of the best attended in years. The Riverboat Cruise on the Pride of the Susquehanna, Jazz Party at the new River City Blues Club, Festival Jam Session at the Mt. Gretna Hideaway, “A Night of Legends” concert at Mt. Gretna’s Playhouse, and Jazz Picnic at Indian Echo Caverns all presented great jazz and built strong relationships with the venues and co-hosting organizations. Our thanks to underwriters Tom & Donna Weik, Robert Pugliese of Premier Wealth Management, Music at Gretna, The Harrisburg Riverboat Society, and all who contributed their time and money to insure the success of this CPFJ is indebted to the Dauphin County Commissioners and Parks Department for funding fabulous event. our “Friends of Jazz” night at the Dauphin County Jazz & Wine Festival in the beautiful Ft. Hunter Park along the Susquehanna River. This marks our second year of “real jazz” under the big tent at this Festival. We presented the 13 piece Grammy winning Spanish Harlem Orchestra & vocalist Dred Scott with Steve Rudolph, Dwayne Dolphin & Roger Humphries to entertain over 1300 attendees that evening. This event was the first of our Fall Concert Series performances. In October we held our 2nd Fall offering at the Pollock Center for the Arts in Camp Hill with trumpeter Terell Staffford’s all-star Quintet (Tim Warfield, Jr., Bruce Barth, Peter Washington and Kenny Washington) performing the music off Lee Morgan. Terell brought the amazing Temple University Jazz Ensemble to open the program. On Thanksgiving weekend our final Fall Concert preesented solo pianist Farid Barron performing works from the history of jazz piano - Fats Waller, Scott Joplin, Art Tatum, Thelonious Monk and more at the WITF Public Media Center. We continued hosting Jazz Jam Sessions throughout the year at two venues in the Harrisburg area - Gullifty’s and the River City Blues Club - giving many area artists and aspiring young jazz musicians the opportunity to perform with professional musicians, make connections, and share knowledge about the art. Our CPFJ Youth Band, directed by Ron Waters , offered experience and instruction in improvisation to over 30 students with no tuition fees. Ron was honored at a special tribute on December 28th for his selfless service to the kids over the past 30+ years - the Ron Waters Jazz Scholarship will be given annually to student musicians. Over $5,000 was raised that evening. Our thanks to all who attended and the musicians who played. CPFJ Board Member and President, Jerry Bennet, retired after many years of service to CPFJ and Paul Bratcher was elected our new Board President. We increased CPFJ’s educational outreach with Oliver Fairley (Youth Committee Chair) instituting a Jazz for Juniors school program, acquired new funding sources, increased membership to 600 with Dr. Bill Anderson heading the committee, and concert attendance was excellent for all events. With Steve Rudolph as our Executive Director and Sheila Ross as Office Manager, we made coalitions with other music presenters to take our concerts and Festival to new venues. The Board voted to fund a video that will be used to promote CPFJ with live interviews, filming of live concerts, Jazz Camp and Festival in 2015. We will continue our efforts to keep America’s Music alive in Central PA and with your help and support we can look forward to many more years of great jazz! Sheila Ross Office Manager CPFJ Board of Directors: . Jon Abel (Youth Committee) Dr. William Anderson (Membership) EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR'S REPORT: . We passed a milestone 35th year in 2015 - please see the opposite page for all of the exciting and successful events from last year. We thank you, our members and fans, for coming out to hear the music and sharing your positive energy. We especially thank all of our wonderful volunteers and volunteer coordinator Leslie Beamer for their time and dedication - it wouldn’t happen without you! After an exciting, year-long celebration of the 35th anniversary of Central Pennsylvania Friends of Jazz, we hit the ground running in 2016 with a Board retreat to set our goals for the coming year. Our senior and newer Board members collaborated on a new theme for CPFJ - Embracing traditions...moving them forward...to create a new jazz legacy. To that end, CPFJ's focus for the next several years will be education. We will begin hosting pre-concert lecture/demonstrations with the jazz artists who perform at our Spring and Fall Concert Series and arrange school workshops by the artists on the Monday after their concert performances. Unfortunately, children everywhere are growing up without a knowledge or an appreciation of jazz. CPFJ will also develop a Jazz in the Schools project beginning this Fall to bring jazz performances and Master Classes to school districts in our region. We will also provide complimentary concert tickets to students so that music teachers and band directors can bring their students to hear the great artists that we present. Adult classes on the history of jazz and the art of improvisation are also being organized for those of you who would like to increase your understanding of the art form and its history. Paul Bratcher (President - Festival) Oliver Fairley (Youth Committee Chair) Dr. Paul Haidet (Newsletter) Mary Heltzel Our last event of 2015 was a tribute our Youth Band director for more than 30 years - Ron Waters. We used that evening to raise money for the new Ron Waters Scholarship Fund that will provide funding to Youth Band members planning to pursue a degree in music and offer tuition assistance to enable deserving students to attend our Jazz Camp at Messiah College. The event raised over $5,000 for the fund and we will hold this event annually during the last week of December. If you would like to donate to the fund, please go to our website or call the office. Youth Band Director: Ron Waters . The ViBE Steve Rudolph - Editor Sheila Ross - Contributing Editor Paul Haidet - Contributing Editor . Volunteer Coordinator Leslie Beamer The 15th Annual Central PA Jazz Camp at Messiah College will be expanded this year from three to four days - June 15th to 18th. Steve Wilson, recording artist and Juilliard School of Music professor, will head our camp faculty and present his group in a public concert on Friday, June 17 at Parmer Hall in Messiah’s High Center. The concert is the 3rd Spring Series event and Sponsor and Corporate members will receive tickets. This will also give Camp students a rare opportunity to hear a professional NYC ensemble. Our traditional student camp concert will then take place on the following evening, Sat. June 18th. We hope to exceed last year's record Camp attendance of 90 students with the expanded format. Check the website for updates and admission forms. Our marketing efforts in past few years have included all of the traditional methods – newsletter, web site, email, direct mail, newspaper and magazine ads, radio, tv, etc… all of these marketing efforts will be bolstered by recent coalitions with area presenters and schools. We now have ongoing relationships with Millersville University’s Ware Center, Music at Gretna & Elizabethtown College, The Harrisburg Arts Festival & Jump Street, the Dauphin County Jazz & Wine Festival, The Allen Theatre in Annville, Messiah College, The Berks Jazz Festival, and The Concert Series at St. John’s in York - all of these associations have yielded wonderful results – from our sold out Jazz Festival concert at Mt. Gretna Playhouse last summer, to the nine hours a day live jazz performances on the Friends of Jazz Stage heard by thousands of people at the Harrisburg Arts Fest, to over 1300 attendees on the Central PA Friends of Jazz Night at the Jazz & Wine Fest at Ft. Hunter. Please help us spread the word - invite your friends to concerts, share this newsletter with interested students and fans, and encourage people to join our organization and contribute to this great American music.
