CLOSER, “Everyday I Have the Blues” Composed by Memphis Slim WHO PERFORMS THIS? 5 — Bob Dorough — BOB DOROUGH, born in Arkansas and “raised”ˇ in Texas, immediately fell in love with music upon joining the Plainview Texas High School Band. He served three years in a Special Services Army Band Unit, gaining much professional experience as arranger, clarinetist, saxophonist, pianist, and entertainer (1943-45). After earning a Bachelor Of Music degree at the University of North Texas (1949), he made a bee-line for New York City where he took classes at Columbia University and immersed himself in the volatile Jazz scene then taking place there - the BeBop revolution. In 1952 he turned his back on the academic scene to devote himself to Jazz performance, specializing in piano/vocals. After years of accompanying, conducting, arranging, and playing, he made his first recording as a leader (1956) for the Bethlehem label....DEVIL MAY CARE, having written the title tune three years earlier. He is known as “the only singer to record with Miles Davis.” While this may not be 100% true, he did record two vocals with Davis in 1962, “Nothing Like You,” and “Blue Xmas,” both of which he composed. Davis also recorded an instrumental version of Bob’s classic song, “Devil May Care,” that same year. In 1971, he received a commission to “set the multiplication tables to music.” This led to a small industry, being the beginning of ABC-TV’s SCHOOLHOUSE ROCK, the Saturday morning cartoons that entertained and instructed unsuspecting children during the years 1973-1985. The impact of this media exposure was unpredictably immense. The show came back for another five years in the 90’s and is now enjoying its 30th anniversary with a DVD edition of the entire, five-subject series, for which Dorough worked as the Musical Director. In 1995 he signed a contract with the prestigious Jazz label - Blue Note Records - and has done three CDs for them (Right On My Way Home, Too Much Coffee Man and Who’s On First). Now residing in Pennsylvania, he has received honors from that state (the Governor’s Artist of the Year Award) and from his native state (the Arkansas Jazz Hall of Fame). 6 In 2002, his trio was chosen to represent the State Department and Kennedy Center, as an Ambassador of Jazz and Blues. The one-month tour saw them play some 22 workshops and concerts in thirteen cities across six different countries. Currently recording on Merry Lane Records and his own label, Bob Dorough continues to perform, often for children too, in Jazz Clubs and Schools, wherever he can. 7 Neil Wetzel, EdD Dr. Neil Wetzel is Assistant Professor of Music at Moravian College (Bethlehem, PA) where he teaches saxophone and is Director of Jazz Studies. Lou has music in his genes - an Opera singer grandfather, a Classical violinist father, and a pianist/organist & vocalist mother. His Jazz influence came from another of his relatives, Vince Trombetta, a saxophonist & arranger who served as musical director of The Mike Douglas Show. Lou’s music teachers include Carlo Menotti, Jimmy Bruno, Michael Leonard, and Larry McKenna. It has been written about Lou that “His style is relaxed but energetic. He’s somewhere in between Connick and Elling for style with his own signature... If you haven’t heard this guy yet, you’re missing something special!” - D. Oscar Groomes, O’s Place Jazz Newsletter; “The young singer successfully fused the crooning and vulnerability of Mel Torme and a young Chet Baker with the risk taking vocalese and scatting of Mark Murphy and Jon Hendricks.” - Alex 12 Henderson, www.allmusic.com; “There is an intensity to his singing that is unique, upbeat and hip; his musicianship is extraordinary.” - Donald True Van Deusen, The Philadelphia Inquirer; “Lou is unerringly hip, and has an unfailing sense of swing.” - Peter Nero; “Hot, swinging male Jazz vocals with breath-catching agility and personality.” - www.tascadamusica.blogspot. com; “Fine, Young-tude, light baritone sound...a voice that uses a perfect scale, control... Lou Lanza - remember that name.” - Mark Murphy; “Lanza, a singer, songwriter, leader, is perhaps the most accomplished male vocalist working in this area.” - Donald True Van Deusen, www.allaboutjazz. com; “Over the years I’ve worked with many singers, Lou is one of the best!” - Jimmy Bruno; “Far superior to Kurt Elling, Michael Buble, Peter Cincotti, and Jamie Cullum, already finds himself, in spite of the difference in age, at the same level of expressiveness of Mark Murphy, Al Jarreau, and Andy Bey.” - Arnaldo DeSouteiro, Tribuna da Imprensa, and by no less of an authority than Tony Bennett, “great.” His live performances in Philadelphia, New York, London, Los Angeles, & Las Vegas, to mention a few, have earned him the admiration of many industry professionals, colleagues, and fans. Lou’s recordings include: The Road Not Taken (C.A.B. Records), Corner Pocket (J-Bird Records), Shadows and Echoes (Challenge Records), and Opening Doors: A Jazz Tribute to The Doors and An Intimate Portrait in Blue. He was named the top male Jazz vocalist of 2004 in the reader’s poll of Rio de Janeiro’s Tribuna da Imprensa for the album opening Doors, and An Intimate Portrait In Blue was listed among the top ten overall albums of 2006 in the same publication. Lou is considered to be among the top 500 Jazz vocalists of all time by noted Jazz critic, historian, and author Scott Yanow and is listed as such in his book The Jazz Singers. Scott has this to say about Lou: “Lou Lanza is one of the few potentially major male Jazz singers under the age of 60 on the Jazz scene today. His warm voice, subtle improvising and unpredictable repertoire make him a singer well worth discovering.” 13 The PA Jazz vision Improving the future through arts education The Pennsylvania Jazz Collective is a (Lehigh valley) Pennsylvania 501(c)3 non-profit, non-stock company, organized exclusively for Educational and charitable purposes, more specifically to foster Jazz appreciation through a regular series of educational initiatives, public performances, and special programs.
