The Korean Language Institute
Welcome.
The world’s best institution for Korean language

interested in Korean language and culture.
This year will be the 56th year since the foundation of the historic Yonsei University

students have studied Korean language and culture at the KLI and are now actively
using their skills in various activities all over the world. It has been through the KLI’s
constant efforts regarding the development of excellent teaching materials and
opening of courses to match student’s demands that the program has been able to
produce this many successful students.
The KLI has noted a present need for improvement in several areas and aims to
continuously reinforce our qualitative capacity to educate students satisfactorily in
Korean language. In the future, in addition to offering instruction in Korean language,
we hope to offer newly created courses in Korean culture in order to diversify and
improve our teaching methods as well as to satisfy our students’ demands.
Based on long term experience and professional theory, our skilled and highly qualified
teachers use well developed teaching methods that cater to students’ needs,
providing KLI students with the best Korean language learning experience possible.
Also, for the sake of those who are unable to come to Korea, we plan to create an

The history of Hangeul (the Korean alphabet) from the reason and
principles of its invention to its current usage are illustrated
by the form of the printed characters themselves.
After being designated an UNESCO world heritage cultural item, linguists
the world over have noted Hangeul’s creativity, scientific nature, and practicality,
and have highly regarded the characters as the most efficient and exact writing system.
We hope you will experience the brilliance and worth of Hangeul
at the Yonsei University Korean Language Institute.

When I first came to Seoul I wanted to
be able to have conversations with
Koreans as fast as possible to become a part of
the Korean society, so I followed the recommendations of the Yonsei students. They told me
that the emphasis of the Yonsei Korean Language Institute is more on speaking than on
writing. After having taken two language levels
here at Yonsei, I could say that this is really true.

If you’re interested in learning Korean
properly and with accuracy, the Yonsei
Korean Language Institute is the only choice.
Out of all of the good Korean language programs
in Seoul, I heard that Yonsei was famous for being very academic, and producing great Korean
speakers. After studying at KLI for a year, I finally
understood what everyone was talking about.
For me, the biggest attraction of the
Korean Language Institute, above all,
was the quality of the classes. The educational
content was quite specific—the Reading, Writing, Listening, and Speaking sections were
taught meticulously one by one, and with high
standards.
The students in all of my classes were all very
passionate about learning Korean, which made
it easy for me to practice in a natural environment during my stay in Seoul. The teachers are
all very passionate about teaching as well, making the 4 hour days fly by.
There were also many opportunities to experience Korean culture while learning the language as well. If I had the chance, I would do it
all again in a heartbeat.
18
2015-2016 KOREAN LANGUAGE PROGRAM
Also, because each of the teachers taught with
considerable enthusiasm, all of the students
had a higher desire to study what we were
learning about. All you need is the desire to
learn, and if you listen well to the teachers’ guidance you can feel your Korean skills improving
naturally.
After a few weeks, I was already able to talk
about daily life topics in Korean. Of course, my
level of speaking wasn't that high (compared to
native speakers) but it still made me happy that
I was able to talk about little things. And of
course, it's fun to learn Korean. The classmates
are really from all over the world. Before I came
to Korea, I didn't expect to meet so many students from Eastern Europe or South America.
Even if the classmates are from all over the
world - the atmosphere in class is very good.
It's so fun to practice daily-life-related dialogues
and you learn a lot about actual Korean daily life.
The teachers are also always motivated and
really kind. Due to that fact, I can really use my
acquired knowledge directly and that way, I
was able to make Korean friends through the
different language exchange programs.
Also, to give you a little bit of extra information, if
you come every day to school, you'll get a
chance to get a nice “prize” at the end of the
course. So if you are interested in learning Korean, I really recommend Yonsei Korean Language
Institute - you will have a great time here!

I have been studying at the language
school at Yonsei for 3 semesters; the
classes are really interesting and the teachers
are always nice and very helpful. They always
explain everything in a way that makes it easy
to understand and they are always there to help
you if you have any questions. While studying
here my Korean has improved a lot, Yonsei focuses a lot on grammar and makes sure you
use it correctly, but they also value the speaking
part just as much.
In October 2009 I won an award for the
Yonsei University Korean Writing Contest for Foreigners, and in 2013 I scored a Level 6
on the Korean Language Proficiency Test.
During class the teachers ask lots of questions
using the grammar and you get to make examples yourselves to practice.
Looking back from where I am now, learning
Korean at the Yonsei University Korean Language Institute was the best opportunity I’ve
had. I think the first and most important thing to
do when you start living in a new country is to
learn the language and culture. Having just graduated from high school in my home country, I did
not have any prior opportunities to study Korean
before I started my study abroad here. But after
what seemed to be just a short time, I had not
only gone from beginner level to advanced level,
but while attending KLI I learned a lot about Korean culture. In no time I had even graduated
from university, just like any other Korean college
student, and am now living well and without any
difficulties whatsoever.
From level 3 and up there are discussions in
class about different subjects, which are both
interesting and a great way to practice. It’s a
complete program that focuses on all aspects
of the language, making a difficult language
very easy to learn.
The school also offers different kinds of cultural
activities. Every week you have the opportunity
to watch a Korean movie for free, and they also
offer cooking classes during school hours. We
also got to learn how to make makgeolli and
kimchi after school and meet Korean students
to do different activities with them. And there is
a language exchange program where you get
partnered up with a Korean Yonsei student to
practice speaking Korean. This fall the school
also offered a 3-day weekend trip to Yeongju
for free to participate in the apple picking festival which is famous in this area. While studying
at Yonsei I got to know a lot of interesting people and now have the opportunity to travel all
around the world to visit them.
The school is located in a great area, with lots of
other students and tons of fun places to go after school. Studying at Yonsei is truly an amazing experience.
My study abroad experience began on June
27th, 2008 in my Level 1 Korean class, and 7
years later I have graduated with a degree in
Electrical Engineering from Yonsei University
and am now working for Hanhwa Chemicals—a large Korean company that many people would love to work for.
The Yonsei University Korean Language Institute is not a place where all you do is study
from textbook—there are a wide variety of other enriching activities. For example, there are
cultural immersion experiences, cooking lessons, and singing and drama competitions to
name a few, and they are all things that provide
helpful knowledge to people no matter your job
or age. For speaking, listening, reading, and
writing, I highly recommend the Yonsei University Korean Language Institute to anyone who
wants to become proficient in all aspects of the
Korean language.

■International Campus University Korean Program
■Spring 2015
Graduate Student of Korean
Studies Interdisciplinary Program at Yonsei University Graduate School
When it comes to Korean Language
programs, the Yonsei University Korean Language Institute is by far the most popular among international students. Without
discrimination, all students receive equal opportunities. It feels like it was only yesterday
that I started this program in Level 1, without
any basic knowledge of the Korean language. It
seems unimaginable to me that I have scored a
TOPIK Level 6 and that I am already going to
graduate from this program.
It is all thanks to the teachers at the KLI.
Through the training and guidance of my teachers, I was able to learn so many things; from the
big things to the little things on the TOPIK test,
every point was covered. At the KLI, not only
did I gain a lot of knowledge, but also I was able
to make new friends. The happy times I have
spent together with the people are still so vivid
to me. Yonsei University’s KLI offers the best
education and facilities in the country. The
study rooms, game room, and lounge are gathered together conveniently in one building and
not only give us convenience but also raise our
will to study.
As I passed each level the vocabulary and
grammar became increasingly difficult, and
even though I often stayed up all night to prepare papers or presentations, the next day I
would always feel my energy refreshed when I
came to class. There were always new things
to learn and new challenges to face, so I strived
to do my best.
Looking back on all the laughter and all the
tears, like beautiful roses and bitter drink, these
are worthwhile that will become everlasting
memories.

General Training/Student (D-4) Visa – For students hoping to stay for 6months longer to obtain language training
• For students in the Regular Program you must apply and be enrolled in at least 2-4 terms. For students in the
University Korean Program, you must apply and be enrolled for at least 3-4 terms. The required documents include a
letter of personal reference from a Korean citizen, and a financial document (indicating that you have at least $5,000
USD equivalent in bank statement). The personal reference must be a Korean national who is currently living and
working in Korea.
• If you are applying for a general training/student visa, it is recommended that you apply about 1 month in advance as it
can take about 2 weeks (or more) to complete the process. Also, if you intend to extend your visa after staying for 6
months, you may be able to get permission for a special work permit (S-3).
Temporary Visit (C-3) Visa – For students who plan to stay for 1 Term only (10 weeks)
• In general, this is called a 3-month (90 day) Tourist Visa, and can be issued in a short period of time. Students hoping
to obtain this visa will need to apply according to the KLI schedule so that the visa will not expire partway through a
term. Students may also choose to change their visa status to a Student (D-4) Visa without having to leave from
Korea.

Additional Housing Information
∙ Student Boarding Houses
There are many student boarding houses in the neighborhood surrounding Yonsei University’s Sinchon Campus that do
not require deposit money or that you have a guarantor. Private rooms can cost between 450,000-600,000 KRW per
month and generally serve 2 meals per day. Just as with our on-campus housing, residents will be able to use a
communal kitchen and laundry rooms.
∙ One-room Apartments
Apartment and One-room contracts are usually made through a real estate agent. Generally you must pay the deposit all
at once (usually 5,000,000 KRW or higher) and make your contract for at least 1 year. Rent will be in the neighborhood of
500,000 KRW per month. The high deposit amount and the long-term contracts can be very burdensome.
