A. Development of American coasters
E. The origin of the ride
B. The earliest days of amusement parks
F. Associations with the term
C. The history of roller coasters
1.1. 1.2. Nowadays it’s hard to imagine funfairs or amusement parks without a roller coaster. Whenever we hear the
name of this popular ride, we associate it with a track that rises and falls, sometimes turning the riders upside
down. Passengers are safely fastened to their seats in the train, so they can enjoy the ride without worrying
about accidents or falling out.
1.3. But who invented it? We don’t know that for sure. The first roller coasters ever mentioned were probably The
Russian Mountains, built in the 17th century around Saint Petersburg in Russia. They were constructed from
wood and looked like slides covered with ice. They were up to 24 metres high and had a 50 degree drop.
People had to climb up the stairs and then they could slide all the way down.
1.4. The oldest roller coaster in the USA dates from the 1850 s. It was a 14 km ride on a downhill track, called the
Gravity Road. Then, in 1884, a man called LaMarcus Adna Thompson invented a new ride. Passengers used
to climb to the top of a platform and ride down the 180 m track and up to the top of another tower where the
vehicle was switched to a return track. Two years later the inventor added dark tunnels with painted scenery. In
the 1900 s a man called John Miller designed even bigger and faster coasters.
1.5. These days roller coasters can be seen in amusement parks all around the world. They are of numerous designs
and shapes and they are made of different materials, especially steel. People can experience rides in different
positions. In stand-up roller coasters they stand, but in flying coasters they hang below the track face-down
with their chests and feet strapped in. Other coasters have combinations of different positions. The aim is
to provide new and exciting experiences for their users.
Zadanie 2.
Przeczytaj tekst, z którego usunięto pięć zdań. Wpisz w luki 2.1.–2.4. litery, którymi oznaczono brakujące
zdania (A–E), tak aby otrzymać logiczny i spójny tekst. Uwaga! Jedno zdanie nie pasuje do żadnej luki.
When asked about the greatest invention of our times,
many people mention the computer. 4.1. You can find it
everywhere – on cars and trains, in clocks, washing machines
and in computers, of course. Even though the wheel is so useful,
its inventor is unknown. Before the invention of the wheel,
humans used fallen trees to move heavy things from one
place to another. 4.2. Nevertheless, they couldn’t use this
method as much as they wanted to because their roads were
not good enough. 4.3. The oldest known wheel was found
in Mesopotamia in 3500 BC. It was made of stone and was used
to produce pots. 4.4. A. Later, around 3200BC, people
started using wooden wheels for
transportation and this is how the
development of technology began.
B. They quickly realised that by placing
an object on something round they
could transport it more easily.
C. However, the object which has
changed the history of mankind is
much simpler – it’s the wheel.
D. The first wheels, which weren’t very
stable, were made from stone and
wood.
E. As a result, instead of using wheels
people continued to carry goods on
their backs.

A. Effects of the Polish edition
B.
The most popular celebrities
C.
The concept and rules of the show
D.
The fall in viewers’ interest
E. Different reasons for popularity
4.1. Strictly Come Dancing is a British entertainment reality TV show which is popular in many countries in the
world. Its idea is to pair celebrities with professional dancers, who have a week to teach the stars a dance or
two. After seven days, the pairs perform the dance and try to impress both the judges and the TV viewers.
The final verdict as to who stays in the programme until the next week and who leaves depends on the
combination of points given by the jury and the votes of the audience.
4.2.
When the first Polish edition of the show appeared on TV in 2005, people immediately fell in love with it. The
programme attracted a vast audience of all ages. Suddenly people became experts on different dances and
steps and the show was one of the main topics of conversation at homes, schools and offices. Dancing schools
and courses became very popular – everybody wanted to dance well. People thought, ‘If the celebrities can
learn in such a short time, perhaps I can, too.’
4.3.
The show was so popular because the public wanted to see how their favourite celebrities would cope with
a task that was completely different from their professional life. It was also very spectacular – not only the
dances, but the beautiful costumes and music, too. Viewers enjoyed listening to the different opinions of
the judges after each performance, and what was even more important – speculating whether there was
something more than a simple teacher – student relationship between the partners. In fact, the winner of the
second edition – Kasia Cichopek, later married her show partner – Marcin Hakiel!
4.4.
The show has been on for several seasons, but the highest number of viewers watching it was recorded during
the second season. With time, people lost interest in Strictly Come Dancing. New exciting shows, like You can
dance, Soapstar Superstar or Got talent! appeared on TV, offering a variety of this type of entertainment. As
a result, the attention of Strictly Come Dancing fans now turned to different programmes, depending on the
age and interests of the viewers.
