The Membership Chairman gives a brief history of the Club during Orientation and I will be expanding on that. The reason I’m starting with the month of March is because of an article that was in the Charleston Mercury the last week of February. I hope these articles enlighten your knowledge of the Club. Submitted by Joe Wolfe March at the Club Years Past I found this article in a recent Charleston Mercury. The title was “Striking Up March Bowling Experiences” by Charles W. Waring, III. The year was 1988 and Mr.Waring was working for then Congressman Arthur Ravenel, Jr. One cold Saturday evening found him at a fundraiser for the March of Dimes at the Charleston Rifle Club. At this event Representatives from Senator Thurmond and Senator Hollings each spoke and then bowled a ball. Also present was someone from Charleston County Council and Mayor Bourne’s office that spoke and bowled a ball. Before we knew it Charleston City Councilman, Henry Berlin was giving a very funny talk on behalf of his Council and Mayor Riley, remembering when his father brought him bowling and so forth. I hoped he would keep us laughing to the point where the hosts might forget about me, the 23 year old in the back of the room. No such luck. Mr.Waring offered the standard greeting and thanked our hosts, but then he dove into the reason for the event. He explained how we were obviously all fortunate because we had a host of civil rights and could vote and protect ourselves from harm, but that is not the case for those we were here to remember and celebrate--- the unborn. He ended with the following, “These are the sweet and innocent children who are left to the slings and arrows of a harsh world and these unborn citizens benefit greatly by those for whom we are here to raise money and awareness--- the March of Dimes. The lady from the March of Dimes was in tears. She applauded loudly and the rest followed. April was a great month filled with dinners, music, dancing and the Chili Cook Off. The Kentucky Derby is this month. I hope to see you at the CRC cheering on your favorite horse. I’m glad to see many of our members participating in the events at the Club. The CRC has a long and very interesting history. I invite each of you to take a little time and discover the rich history and roots of the Charleston Rifle Club. I look forward to seeing you this month. The ongoing success of the CRC is a direct result of your continued support. Ron Redondo CRC President Hooray! Hooray! Its’ the first of May and outside activities start today!! My Mom used to start my day every May 1st with that little rhyme well into my adult hood. She would even call me at work to say it the first thing in the morning—and I in turn would call my best friend and repeat the verse. There is more to the verse, but it could be considered offensive to some so I won’t put it in print. It is a cute way to start the day especially on Mondays!! May just seems to hold so much promise of things to come—warmer weather—bird’s singing- squirrels going crazy –and just beauty exploding. Enjoy some quiet time for yourself outside and enjoy the beauty of nature!! This month it is our Memorial and Lifetime Members luncheon on Sunday – May 15th. It is free—just bring a cover dish. We remember those of us that have passed way in the last year—from last May 2015 until this year May 2016. After our memorial service which is really memorable and special we celebrate our lifetime members. These are the people that have been the anchor of the club and made it what it is today. I am inviting ALL members to participate—just bring a cover dish and come be a part of something special. The dress is business casual. If you need more info you are welcome to call the office or one of the CRC or CRCLA board members and we will be glad to try and answer any question or point you in the right direction of someone who could answer your question. The Scholarships this year will be awarded at the dinner prior to the June meeting. Everyone is invited—we changed the date from May until June so more of the winners would be available to attend. There will be a special dinner (still $5) and scholarship awards prior to the CRC and CRCLA meetings. Marilyn Hovis and Sally Lewis have done a great job this year!!! Thank you!!! Just a reminder that Mother’s Day is also this month—call your Mom and tell her you love her—and if your Mother has passed say a little prayer of thanks that you had a Mom that loved you and stood by you and did her best to raise you to be the best you could be.
