One of the most important lesson young athletes can learn is that whether you win or lose, they learn to respect opponents, officials and spectators. The most powerful way they learn this lesson is through example. It is important that involved all with the Deanery athle1c program follow this code: To emphasize the proper ideals of sportsmanship, ethical conduct and fair play. To demonstrate courtesy to opponents and officials. To respect the integrity and judgment of officials. To have a thorough understanding and acceptance of the rules and standards of eligibility. To recognize that the purpose of compe11on is to promote the physical, mental, moral, social and emo1onal well being of the players. To remember that a game is only an ac1vity and not a maber of life or death for player, coach, school, parish, official or fan. Players should: • Know and demonstrate the fundamentals of sportsmanship. • Curtail fellow teammates whose behavior is unbecoming. • Respect the property of hosts and the decision-‐making responsibili1es of officials. • Show respect for injured opponents, and not applaud errors of opponents or penal1es. • Not heckle, jeer or inten1onally distract members of the opposing team and never cri1cize fellow compe1tors or the coach for losing team. • Respect the judgment and strategy of the coach, who should not be second-‐guessed. • Demonstrate appropriate behavior before and aqer contests. Coaches Should: • Always set a good example for others to follow. • Teach the values of honest effort in conforming to the spirit as well as the leber of the rules. • Instruct the players of their sportsmanship responsibili1es. • Discipline those players who display poor sportsmanship behavior and remove players who flaunt disciplinary ac1on. • Be a gracious host to opponents and treat them, as you would want to be treated. • Provide opportuni1es for social interac1on among coaches and players. • Respect the officials' judgment and interac1on of the rules and lead by example to the players. • Help players in recognizing the dangers of drugs, alcohol and tobacco use to their bodies and minds. Parents and Fans Should: • Be courteous to players, coaches and fans of opponents. • Cheer a good play by an opponent. • Respect the officials' judgment and lead by example to the players. • Not applaud errors of opponents or penal1es inflicted on them. • Serve as a role model for the players. • Respect the judgment and strategy of the coach, who should not be second-‐guessed. • Respect the property of your own facility and that of your opponents. All players, coaches or spectators who are not living up to this Deanery Code of Behavior will be subject to immediate suspension or expulsion from athle1c compe11ons. The head coach is ul1mately responsible for the conduct of his or her players and assistant coaches. The head coach and any parish or school administrators in abendance at a game are asked to be responsible for the behavior of their fans. PLEASE SHARE THIS CODE WITH YOUR COACHES, PLAYERS, PARENTS, and FANS. We hope that all involved in deanery athle1cs will work together to implement this Code. We can only fully implement this by focusing upon the philosophy of fully commibed Chris1an adults can we help our youth grow in all dimensions through athle1cs. BASKETBALL RULES updated – August 2015 New Albany Deanery Catholic Youth Ministry The purpose for Deanery Athle1cs is to form Chris1an community among our youth and to provide wholesome recrea1on. All teams are encouraged to foster good sportsmanship. Referees are instructed not to tolerate any display of unsportsmanlike conduct and to forfeit the game if necessary. Both Boys and girls games will be governed by IHSAA rules with the following excep1ons. HOSTING GAMES 1. If parishes are hos1ng the Deanery Games; they may collect admission if they so choose to cover the expenses of u1li1es, etc. Admission to games shall be $1.00 for students and $2.00 for adults (No family fee). We are grateful for the willingness of our parishes to share their facili1es with us. In addi1on the hos1ng parish may decide to allow Free admission to Kindergarten and under as well as $1.00 for 65 and over. 2. All players on the team roster, the coach, and the team scorekeeper are admibed free. All non-‐parish team members must be iden1fied on the roster. 5. Two parishes, unable to field a team individually because of too few players, may combine members to field one team with the Deanery Athle1c Coordinator’s approval. 6.
