Experimental and National Schools - Summer Camp: June 2015 AAF held two rounds that took place for (Primary 4,5, 6) and (Preparatory 1,2,3) for a total of 45 students from Experimental Schools (Millennium Schools) from June 7th – 11th, 2015 and June 28th – July 2nd, 2015 at AAF premises. The Summer Camp STEM activities 1. Robotics The students got introduced to the different components of their Robot kit, while working together to sort and find different parts. This activity is like an ice breaking activity and helps the students to observe the parts and focus on reading the 2D drawings and match it with 3D parts. The students learned about the robot motors and how the motor act as a muscle of a robot, through assembling a Mini-Tank. Also, through this activity the students learned about using the robot main board. Students got challenged to build a Sumo-Bot (a robot that could play Sumo) and predict the engineering principles behind it. 3. Engineering Building Towers Students got introduced to structures engineering and how to build sustainable structures and challenge the gravity by building a stable tower capable of carrying a small ball. The tower should be built using straws and paper clips only. 4. Windmill Students learned about green energy and how we could use wind energy to generate electricity through building a windmill using daily used materials. 5. Rockets Students learned about rockets and the main rockets components (the body, fins, fuel, and nose) and the effect of each part on the rocket latitude while building a water rocket. Students built their own parachutes and saw the parachutes effect on their rockets landing. It focuses on four essential topics: About the Student, Teaching & Learning, Lesson Planning and Classroom Management. AAF trained 50 nursery teachers of Nahdit El Mansouria; the teacher development training divided in two groups, 25 in two different days, on seven selected sessions at Nahdit El Mansouris premises. CHANGE is the only training company which offers unique hands on training in this field in Egypt. The topics are: Learning Styles, Multiple Intelligence, the Brain, Classroom Management, Behavior Management, Classroom Story Telling 28 | Al Alfi Foundation and Classroom Art Project. It is essential to connect with students and prepare the learning environment before teaching and learning happens. Connection pre requisites knowledge about the students various aspects of development: cognitive, emotional, social, moral and physical. It also requires the quest of knowledge about interests and needs and necessitates the sincere dedication for the love of teaching. When connection happens learning occurs. A teacher acts as a facilitator of knowledge not a dictator of knowledge. A teacher is an artist of mind who enlightens and inspires young minds to think righteously and creatively to become effective influential members in society. Mission - To qualify teachers to become human teachers. - To prepare teachers to meet students’ needs and accommodate differences. - To assist them to become competent and adequate in their classroom. - To inspire them to inspire their students with the love of learning. The teacher learns about the child and his needs, educates himself/herself about subject matter and its requirements and acquires more strategies to apply and deliver the knowledge gained. Teaching happens spontaneously when the teacher apply the knowledge correctly and connects with the students. Thus, a positive and joyful teaching and learning experience happens which inspires the student to learn more. The teacher feels the reward of teaching and works on developing skills more. Learning is a contnious flow of knowledge that takes place and rotates from teacher to student and back to the teacher which creates an on going state of learning. Teacher Professional Development Learning is a continious aspect for self development and improvement. Professional development is a teacher’s compass for growth and exellence. Intention is the root of all goodness in education. If the teacher is sincere about education and has clear intention to teach young minds and to facilitate the learning process then she/he will have perseverance to make all efforts and trials to deliver quality knowledge, then student learning will naturally occur. Philosophy of Education - Every learner is different in the way he or she receives knowledge so we diversify our teaching strategies to include the visual, auditory, kinesthetic and tactile learners. - Every student is intelligent or gifted in a way or another so we diversify our learning tools and environment. - Students learn best when they participate by saying and doing and that’s why our courses are based on active and hands-on learning. - Actual learning happens in a fun, joyful and welcoming environment. Annual Report 2015 | 29 3- National and International Competition 3-A- Famelab Egypt About Femelab FameLab is an international competition initiated by the Cheltenham Science Festival and the National Endowment for Science, Technology and the Arts (NESTA) in the UK. FameLab International is delivered by Cheltenham festival’s global partner the British council. FameLab is mainly designed to identify and nurture talents in science communications, specifically aimed at: - Encouraging young scientists to find their voices and to communicate with the wider public in an open, inspiring and interactive way. - Stimulating younger generations to consider a career in science and science communications. - Promoting science as part of popular culture. 30 | Al Alfi Foundation FameLab targets young Egyptian scientists and science students from 18 to 35 years old, working in or studying Basic, Life or Engineering Sciences to participate and compete. Each participant in the local heats will be given a maximum of three minutes in which he/she will present to the panel of judges and the audience an entertaining, original and scientifically accurate talk without using PowerPoint or other electronic presentation tools. The jury members, who are leading figures from the world of science and media, will judge the contestants on the content, clarity and charisma of their talks. Famelab final competition event took place at the Baron Palace on May 18th, 2015. Annual Report 2015 | 31 AAF sponsored two final winners to attend the London International Youth Science Forum (LIYSF) in UK 2015 from July 22nd to 5th of August, 2015. Annual Report 2015 | 39 3-G - The 21st World Conference for Gifted & Talented Children The World Council for Gifted and Talented Children held its 21st Biennial World Conference at the Radisson Blu H.C. Andersen Hotel in Odense, Southern Denmark. This unique international event brings together leaders in the field of gifted and talented education every two years to promote communication among one another and share best practices and experiences. Al Alfi Foundation Parallel Session was on Wednesday 12th of August at 4:30 pm, under the topic of Assessment, screening and identification Abstract was: Identifying gifted and talented students in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) subjects is complicated because most identification schemes favor measures of verbal ability and prior attainment. The Al Alfi Foundation’s mission is to identify gifted STEM students in Egypt nurtures their talents via enrichment programmes and scholarships. They need a reliable and accessible assessment that ignores the impact of the variable quality of teaching experienced by applicants that might result in 40 | Al Alfi Foundation exceptional students not being correctly identified. There is strong evidence for the correlation between ability in spatial thinking and success in STEM subjects. The Foundations tests a range of cognitive abilities including verbal, non-verbal and quantitative thinking but they particularly focus on spatial ability as a marker of students with ability in STEM. The tests are taken in English or Arabic depending on school. Successful students are offered advanced summer and after-school programmes and each year 5 International Baccalaureate fellowships are provided. Scholarships are available for undergraduate and post graduate students who have demonstrated academic excellence in qualifying subjects. Analysis is ongoing but to date 93 scholars have graduated from leading universities including Imperial College and Columbia University. The Foundation believes that they have a replicable model that would support similar initiatives elsewhere. 3-H - New AAF Fellows and 2015 Graduates at the Welcoming Reception with AAF Board Members In the presence of Mr. Moataz Al Alfi – AAF Chairman, Mr. Adel Al Alfi and Ms. Maha Ahmed, Board Members a welcoming reception took place in July 7th, 2015 were 21 new fellows and 6 graduates – 2015 have attended.
