2014 Membership Survey
I
by
Daryl K. Williams, Membership Chairman
n our last edition of Stars in Georgia we reported some
results of the survey. Since the time that article was written,
the Board of Directors has met and has started discussion
about the survey results. Of particular interest are the 13
people who stated that they were interested in becoming more
involved in club leadership as well as the 20 people who said
that they were willing to help with events.

and in event planning will assure our club stays strong in
the future. It will take us some time to assimilate the many
volunteers, but the board is working to do that.
All board members have been given the names of those who
wish to be more involved with leadership. An event will be
planned for both groups to discuss event planning. Our Vice
President has been given the names of those who want to
help plan events and will be assigning them to various event
planners to start this process.

Atlanta Motoring Festival
Inaugural Event
Sunday, May 17, 2015
F
by
Doug Geganto, Event Planner
or years many Atlanta car enthusiasts have wondered
why Atlanta doesn’t have a premier Concours on the
same scale as Hilton Head and Amelia Island. Philip Carroll,
a motoring enthusiast and
visionary wondered the
same thing so last year he
began formulating ideas
for the Atlanta Motoring
Festival, which he hopes
will evolve into an annual
Concours event on the
national Concours tour.
The goal for the Atlanta Motoring Festival is to put on a worldclass automotive event that honors our heroes and the cars
they drove while promoting the Art form of the Automobile.
www.atlmotoringfest.org
About the Soft Event:
This year the organizer has scheduled a “Soft Event’ on May
17th at the Chucker Polo Fields in Alpharetta, GA (1140 Liberty Grove Rd. Alpharetta, Georgia 30004). We have been
invited to display 10-15 vehicles at this show. The purpose
of the May 17th event will be to introduce the venue, location
and provide information about the Festival and how this can
become an annual Concours on the national tour. Food and
beverages will be available for sale and live jazz bands will
entertain the crowd throughout the day.
Of course, they are looking for a variety of Mercedes cars
classic and newer models. Last year at the High Museum
show we wowed the crowds with our display of SL Chassis
from the 300SL’s to a 2014 SL. I’d certainly like to reproduce that display for this initial event as well as add a few
other unique Mercedes Vehicles. Perhaps the Best of Show,
People’s choice, Jim Partain and Best Interior winners from
our 2014 Concours. Ample parking will be available for those
who will trailer their vehicles to the show.
Mercedes-Benz vehicle registration for the “soft event” will be
coordinated by myself, Doug Geganto. Cars must be on the
VKRZ¿HOGE\DP I will be the point of contact for our
vehicles in case anyone has any questions or wants to display their car. Please register directly through me by email
dgeganto@charter.net or by calling me directly at (404) 7549955. The list of registered Mercedes-Benz vehicles will be
forwarded to the event organizers before the closing day, May
12, 2015. Please provide information about your vehicle for
the windshield card.
Spectators
Admission for spectators will be $10.00. Food and beverages
will be available for sale.
Going forward, the 2016 event will be an invitation only event
displaying the best cars from each participating club. There

Don’t miss the opportunity to show your or attend to view a

et your navigator and take a leisurely drive through
the backcountry roads of Southern Georgia.
Our journey will begin at the original Chick-Fil-A Dwarf House
located at 461 N Central Ave, Hapeville, GA 30354. Restrooms and food are available. Our meeting time will be 9:00
a.m. with a roll out time at 9:30 a.m. From this historic starting point we will proceed to old GA 85 and head south to
the quaint town of Senoia, www.senoia.com, the location of
the town of Woodbury in the popular TV show, The Walking
Dead. In Senoia you will have time to walk around the town
and visit the many shops along Main Street. From Senoia
we will continue south along historic GA 85 stopping for a
photo opportunity at historic Star’s Mill Park. www.scenicusa.
net/070508.html
Just a bit south on GA 85 we’ll drive through another set location from the Walking Dead. From here we’ll continue on
to historic Barnesville www.barnesville.org. Barnesville was
once dubbed the “Buggy Capital of the World” as the town
produced about 16,000 buggies a year around the turn of the
century. As we enter Barnesville you’ll pass a number of old
antebellum homes along Thomaston Street.
After visiting Barnesville we’ll continue onto Juliette where
SDUWVRIWKHPRYLH)ULHG*UHHQ7RPDWRHVZHUH¿OPHG-Xliette is also the home of the Whistlestop Café www.thewhistlestopcafe.com where we’ll have a late lunch or early dinner.
Lunch will be on your own at the Whistlestop. After a relaxing
meal and fellowship we’ll head home. Juliette is close to interstate 75 so getting back to Atlanta should be easy.
This will be a pure driving event, not a timed event. Drivers and navigators will follow a set of rallye directions and a
leisurely journey along the back roads of rural Georgia. No
questions or tests; just the enjoyment of being on the open
road.
Registration for this event is $5.00 per person. Snacks and
beverages will be provided at the start. Registration is required, a nominal registration fee of $5.00/per person. To
register on-line go to: www.MotorSportsReg.com or visit
the Peach Page to register by mail! Registration closes on
May 31st. All registrants will need to sign the standard MBCA
waiver form. Questions? Please contact Doug Geganto at

S
by
Marie Penn, Tracy Moorman, and Daryl Williams,
Event Planners
ave this date on Saturday, August 15, there will be a special
event for MBCA Club members and friends of MercedesBenz of Augusta. We will start our day with a “cruise in” style
car show at Mercedes-Benz of Augusta from 10:30 a.m.
until noon (an area will be available at 9:30 a.m. for those
who wish to wipe down their cars). This show is open to all
Mercedes-Benz automobiles. Mercedes-Benz of Augusta will
be serving us a complimentary lunch. After lunch there will be
an opportunity to learn more about our cars and to ask the
experts questions. There will be a discussion of the European
Delivery program including some photos, and a discussion
about the MBCA trip to Germany. In the evening there will be
a dinner that many will wish to attend. We are negotiating for
special rates at a hotel for those who wish to spend Friday
night and/or Saturday night. Look for more details in the next
edition of Stars in Georgia.
The course comprises two parts.
In the morning, there will be a brief
classroom session. Afterwards,
there will be in-car instructors to
guide participants through the
course while they learn alternative
maneuvers to their driving knowledge when an emergency situation occurs.
In the afternoon, Frank and Mary
Alice will redesign the course, into a slow-speed autocross,
so that participants can practice the skills, which they have
acquired in the morning session.
Mary Alice will share with you how this defensive driving
course saved her life. The objective is for participants to know
what their cars can do and what they can do with their cars;
thereby, making them safer and more alert highway drivers.
PARTICIPANTS ARE ENCOURAGED TO BRING THE CAR
THAT THEY DRIVE DAILY.

Two technicians from Alloy Wheel Repair, Kevin and Nathan,
took time to explain the types of wheel damage that they can
repair, how repairing a wheel is far more cost effective than
replacing one and allowed us to look through the mobile trailer. Kevin then took us through the steps on how to repair a

New plant to be built in Charleston, South Carolina, beginning in 2016
Next generation Sprinter also to be manufactured in the U.S.
Expansion of the global production network as part of the “Mercedes-Benz Vans goes global” growth strategy
Creation of more than 1,300 new jobs planned
Volker Mornhinweg: “We are investing around half a billion dollars to create a top-notch Mercedes-Benz van plant
here in South Carolina. This plant is key to our future growth in the very dynamic North American van market.”
Mercedes-Benz Vans announced today that it will invest around half a billion dollars to build a new van plant in the United
States. Located in Charleston, South Carolina, the facility will supply the North American market with the next-generation

Vans, and by South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley. With the new plant, Mercedes-Benz Vans will become one of the biggest
industrial employers in the region. Within the total area of more than 200 acres (more than 800,000 m²), the division will
create a completely new body shop, a paint shop and an assembly line. Construction of the new factory is scheduled to
begin in 2016.
The new Sprinter plant in the United States is essential for Mercedes-Benz Vans, as the large van segment is expected to
grow rapidly in North America over the next few years. The United States is one of the most dynamic van markets in the
world. At the same time, Mercedes-Benz Vans currently faces high U.S. import duties and a complex disassembly process
of Sprinters made in Germany for sale in the U.S. The new plant and the vehicles ‘Made in USA’ will enable the company
to more economically meet the growing demand from North American customers in the future and to considerably reduce
delivery time on this market.

region has very highly skilled workers, a dense network of reliable suppliers, and an outstanding logistics infrastructure that
includes good transport connections to the nearby harbor. Just as important is the very good cooperation and support we’ve
experienced at the local, municipal, and state levels. I would particularly like to thank Governor Haley and the many other
people who’ve given this project their fullest support from the very start and thus helped make this decision possible.”
“Today’s announcement builds on a decade of success for Daimler and Mercedes-Benz in the South Carolina Lowcountry,

state and for the Charleston community. Its decision to bring South Carolina-made vans to the North American market is
huge, and the 1,300 new jobs this plant will create is a big boost to the region.”
