It entered the United States in 1982, where its name was changed to Quad Rugby. 11th Annual Columbus Collision Sponsors Who: While most Quad Rugby players have sustained cervical spinal cord injuries resulting in quadriplegia, anyone with a combination of upper and lower extremity impairment is eligible to play. Teams are comprised of male and female players. Classification: After being subject to a thorough muscle function test by a panel of three medical doctors, physical therapist, and/or occupational therapist all players are given one of seven classification levels of .5 to 3.5, based on level of function. Each team plays with four players, whose point total cannot exceed eight total points. The classification levels help make everyone an integral part of the team, whether they are .5 or 3.5. Court: Quad Rugby is played on a regulation basketball court with an 8 meter goal line, with a 1.75 meter by 8 meter key extending from the goal, at each end of the court. The Game: It consists of four eight minute quarters. A jump ball begins the game then teams inbound the ball from the goal line. Teams have 15 seconds to advance across half court with the ball and 40 seconds from inbound in which to score. The ball must be dribbled or passed every 10 seconds and can be passed or hit to teammates. A goal is achieved when a player crosses through the key and gets any two wheels over the goal line. Only three defensive players are allowed in the key and offensive players are allowed in the key for no more than 10 seconds at a time. Teams employ various defensive and offensive strategies similar those used in basketball. Fouls are assessed and penalties can result in goals, one minute penalties or turnovers. NGB: The sport is governed by the United States Quad Rugby Association (USQRA) and more information is available at their web site www.quadrugby.com. 6 A very special thanks to all of our sponsors and volunteers.
