Giving shelter animals a voice
Director’s Welcome
Dear Friend of the Animals,
2014 is starting out to be a very busy and exciting year for Humane Society Calumet Area. Three major announcements were
unveiled at this year’s annual gala, Hair of the Dog.
Since taking on the City of Gary’s dogs, the staff has been extremely busy and the shelter is always at capacity. We have
been forced to find unique ways to place the amount of animals coming through our doors. Thankfully, we have been
accepted to the ASPCA 100K Rachel Ray Challenge. Humane Society Calumet Area was chosen to compete along with
fifty other shelters nationwide. The goal is to find homes for at least 300 more animals this June, July and August than the
summer of 2013. Our theme, Rescue Me, will take us throughout Northwest Indiana to work with local police officers, fire
fighters and emergency personnel.
A key component to our success this summer will be our partnership with
Alsip Nursery. The new Rescue Center initiative in Frankfurt, IL and St.
John, IN will allow us to save more lives in Indiana. Alsip Nursery has
agreed to stop selling dogs and puppies from breeders and move to an all
rescue only adoption center. This initiative has the ability to save thousands
of more lives each year.

Another exciting announcement is the ability to fulfill our mission of
humane treatment of all animals. Moraine Ridge Wildlife Rehabilitation
Center has joined the Humane Society Calumet Area family as a subsidiary. MRWC will be one of the first dedicated facilities
in Northwest Indiana to accept injured or abandoned wildlife. The facility, located in Valparaiso, will be open this spring.

Early Bird Food Truck Early Bird Food Truck is our first Humane Business of the Year. They have been so named due
to their efforts promoting humane food options at
locations throughout the Region. They are the first
to offer these options in the area demonstrating
that delicious, nutritious food can also be humane
to all animals. They also donated all of their tips
from the summer to HSCA.

Cover Photo
The cover cats are owned by Brian & Jennifer Cram of Lansing, IL. Their
winning bid in HSCA’s annual Silent Auction earned them a complimentary
portrait package from Woof Studios with one 8x10 print, two 5x7s, and eight
wallets and along with their photo being featured on the cover of Speak.
Woof Studios has been kind enough to donate this package for the last several years.
Woof Studios has been taking photos of pets for over 20 years. They do pets
alone, with owner, children, etc. They can do multiple animals or solo shots.
Woof Studios now uses green screen software that allows them to offer hundreds of background options (see the back cover for some examples). The
dates for their next visits to HSCA are listed on our back cover. Appointments

Paw Pals Cage Sponsors Paw Pals Cage Sponsorship is a simple
way to help care for the animals living
at the shelter. Just $15 each month
helps provide care for an animal at the
shelter. Each sponsor is assigned a
cage at the shelter, given a photo of the
animal in their cage, and an HSCA t-shirt.
Your committment of 50 cents each day
ensures a shelter animal has everything
he needs until he finds a forever home.

Planned Giving
Consider naming Humane Society Calumet Area

Birthday Parties at the Shelter
Shelter birthday parties are a great option for children who
love animals. Imagine having a party for your child and not
cooking or cleaning!
For as little as $150, the HSCA will host a party for up to
20 kids (additional kids $5 each) featuring a behind-thescenes shelter tour, cake, ice cream, drinks, games, animal
play time and more!
Stardust Bowl II in Merrillville, IN offers the Alley Cat
Special every Monday. Make a $2 donation to HSCA
and play for only $1.50 per game. All donations go
directly to the animals at the shelter.

ASPCA Mega Match-a-Thon
In Honor of - Donation Made By
Thank you to everyone who adopted, volunteered, and
supported our ASPCA Mega Match-a-Thon event last
Oct. 18-20. A big thank you to Porter County Animal
Shelter, South Suburban Humane Society, Whiting
Animal Control, Lakeshore Paws, Treasured Friends,
and everyone who brought animals and helped them
get adopted. A Total of 81 animals found homes at this
event. We look forward to doing more large adoption
events in conjunction with other groups in the future.

I just wanted to give you an update on the dog Adeline that
we adopted on 10/2/12. She has become a wonderful addition to our family. We call her Addie. She loves my kids and
they adore her. It has not all been easy, but we just hung in
there and she has turned into a great dog. There are still a
few things we need to work on with her, but I know with time
and love, she will only get even better. Thank you so much
for bringing her over from the Gary facility to Munster and giving us the opportunity to adopt her.

In February 2012, my family adopted a lovely little 1½ year
old black cat by the name of Mercury. We were enchanted
by him from the first meeting when he jumped up and
unrolled the paper towels. After renaming him Reece, he
bonded almost immediately with his “big brother”, our fluffy
orange tabby, Digby, a stray we had taken in a year and
a half earlier. He’s very sweet, mischievous, cuddly, and,
on occasion, a little too curious (especially when it comes
to climbing the Christmas tree). It’s impossible to express
how much love he has added to our lives and is a wonderful companion to Digby. (By the way, to thank you for
letting us take him home, I started working at the PAWS
Resale Shoppe that summer and still am.)

collected $465 in donations at her annual lemonade stand to benefit the animals!!
Eads Elementary School’s Girl’s On the Run - made bracelets
and sold them raising $429.17 in donations.
JCY Day Camp - heard
about the fire at the shelter in
July 2013 and stepped into action collecting a huge amount
of donations for the animals,
including a very stylish custom
dog bed.
