IN an area where just under half fail their
restricted driving licences, North King Country’s
young drivers are being helped by a collaborative effort between Waitomo and Otorohanga
district councils to ensure they are adequately
trained to pass.
Under a three-year pilot scheme which is now
coming to a close, both councils operated driver
training programmes for 16-24 year olds through
the Government funded Community Driver
Mentor Programme (CDMP) co-ordinated by
the New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA).
However, NZTA, whose statistics show that
52% of young drivers in Te Kuiti pass their
restricted and 56% in Otorohanga, are working
with the councils to go a step further.

The mayors believe that training young drivers to pass their restricted licence works both in
the ability to teach acceptable (and legal) driving
practises, but also gives them potentially better
employment chances, particularly in the heavy
transport industry which is believed to be at a
critical point with a lack of drivers in regional
areas.
“The new service level agreement will ensure
that the programme is equally promoted in the
Waitomo and Otorohanga districts with every
endeavour to support an equal split of student enrolments from the two districts,” says Mr Hanna.

EA wants TLC feedback
THE Lines Company customers are being asked to complete a
questionnaire for the Electricity
Authority (EA).
As part of its review of TLC’s
pricing and load control, the authority has developed the online
questionnaire for consumers, which
went live on Tuesday.
As well as pricing and load control practices, the EA’s review will
also look at incentives TLC’s places
on consumers and the outcomes
they influence.
What it won’t consider are previous reviews covering issues like the
legality of TLC’s pricing methodology and communications with
stakeholders carried out by various
agencies including the authority,
the Commerce Commission, the
Electricity and Gas Complaints
Commission and Commerce Select
Committee.
The EA expects its review will
take six to 12 months and its findings will be released to the public.
Chief executive Carl Hansen says:
“We are taking a broad approach to
this enquiry, as it is clearly vitally
important for TLC’s customers.
“Any findings will also be important for the wider electricity
industry, as we are looking into the
interactions between TLC’s load
controlling and pricing regimes,
and the impact they are having on
consumers.”
Mr Hansen says information
gathered from the questionnaire
will “help inform our review”.
“I’d really encourage all TLC customers to complete this questionnaire so that we have a full understanding of their views.”

Luggage stolen
ON September 7, my family’s rental vehicle was broken into while we
visited the caves in Waitomo.
Two pieces of luggage were stolen, a small blue carry-on size duffle and
a larger orange suitcase.
The latter contained absolutely nothing, but clothes for a very petite
woman and the former held an older iPad and toiletries. It’s likely a long shot but we’re hoping the thieves may have ditched the
clothes somewhere along the roads or in the caves village (or a neighbouring town) when they realised there was nothing very valuable. Can anyone
help us?

However, I believe it is important to hold a balanced view and it is not

There were unsavoury acts carried out by both sides.
For example the unprovoked murder of Captain Gascoigne, his wife and
two tiny children, two settlers and Reverend John Whitely at Pukerahue on
February 13, 1869 – a full account of which is easy to find on Papers Past. No conflict anywhere on the globe has ever been pretty, always involves
retributive acts by both sides, and we should not pretend that the New
Zealand conflicts were any different.

Bad luck that he chose not to answer them.
No, that’s not fair. He did answer them, in such a way as to provide no clear answers.
His evasion was that of a professional and very likely contributed to his
being selected for the position. He would be masterful as a parliamentarian. Hillary Clinton would be proud of him.

McVicar to
speak here
SENSIBLE Sentencing Trust founder Garth
McVicar is coming to Otorohanga.
Mr McVicar is bringing his ‘Tour of Duty’
to the Kiwiana Capital in conjunction with the
Otorohanga Club and Otorohanga Lions next
Wednesday.
He believes the escalation of violent crime is a
direct reflection of deteriorating social standards
and moral values.
“Once known for being the safest country in
the western world, NZ has progressively become
a very criminal and violent nation,” he says.
With four daughters and a farm in Hawke’s
Bay, Mr McVicar believes he has a pretty big stake
in the future direction of NZ.
Unable to stand back and watch, he decided to
take the enormous challenge on himself and has
dedicated his life to the cause ever since.
And he uses a famous quote by Robert Kennedy in information from the trust to highlight
its work . . . “Each time a man stands up for an
ideal, or acts to improve the lot of others, or strikes
out against injustice, he sends forward a tiny ripple of hope…”
FORMATION
The Sensible Sentencing Trust was formed in
2001 to bring balance to the law and order debate
and give the many innocent victims of homicide
guidance, hope and a voice.
It has become the country’s largest privately
funded victim advocacy and justice reform
organisation.
On September 23, Mr McVicar will speak
about the trust’s journey, how it instigates and
runs campaigns to change legislation including
the recent Justice for Moko campaign, the vision
for its future and to thank the many Kiwis who
have helped make a difference by supporting the
trust’s work.
“Never say it can’t be done,” he says.
“New Zealand was founded and developed by
brave pioneers unafraid to take on the seemingly
impossible,” he says.
“Over the years many individuals have fought
and built on our reputation as a nation unafraid
to tackle impossible odds.
“The trust likewise has built an enviable reputation of being unafraid to tackle the impossible.”

SINCE 2001, the Sensible Sentencing Trust has
had a number of successes starting with rebalancing the justice system by lobbying for victims’
rights and many homicide victim families which
were presented to various Select Committees.
Other successes include:
l Lobbying the Government on sentencing
and parole reforms and, although the trust says
the “current situation is still not ideal”, most
murder sentences are more than 10 years – RSA
killer William Bell received a 30 year non-parole
sentence.
l The RSA landmark case won compensation
for Susan Couch and other RSA victims’ families.
The 2010 ‘Three Strikes Law’ – prior to this
offenders could amass hundreds of offences.
l Lobbying for the $50 offender levy introduced in 2010. In the first 12 months, $2 million
was collected, exceeding expectations. Since
then, the levy – used to fund entitlements and
services for victims of serious crime – has collected $16.6 million.
l Submissions and attendances at all Select
Committee hearings on justice and victimrelated issues.
l Appointment of a senior victim advisor
to report directly to the Minister of Justice on
victim issues.
l Lobbying for the National Victims Centre
which today is the central distribution centre for
all victim support and victim-associated funding.
l The introduction of DNA testing for convicted offenders – which has helped solve several
cold cases.
l Ongoing lobbying of the Government to put
victims’ rights at the heart of the justice system.

Changes to tighten bail laws, which have
been introduced – 25% of bail application are
now declined.
l Lobbying for longer parole postponements
– the parole board can now postpone hearings
for up to five years.
Trust founder Garth McVicar says the most
recent win is the Sex Offender Register.
“Although, we don’t think it goes far enough.
We intend to lobby for an open public register.”
He says the various reforms above (and more
are not listed) have contributed to “halving NZ’s
homicide rate from 164 to approximately 80”.
“But our most significant achievement is the
change of culture that is now beginning to permeate through society.
“We are confident future generations will
inherit a much safer country.”

Dr John receives fellow
TO an outsider the word ‘humble’ is tailor
made for Kawhia GP Dr John Burton, the latest
local recipient of Rotary’s highest honour – the
Paul Harris Fellow.
Dr Burton, affectionately known in Kawhia as
‘Dr John’, was presented the award by the Otorohanga Rotary Club last week, in recognition of his
service to the coastal community he has called
home for the past 24 years.
As well as the prestigious Paul Harris award,
the Otorohanga club invested US$1000 in the
Rotary Foundation, which is one of the biggest
charitable trusts in the world, in Dr Burton’s
name.
Fifty people attended the function including
mayor Max Baxter, deputy mayor Deb Pilkington, Kawhia Community Board chairman
Kit Jeffries and three doctors from Otorohanga
Medical Centre.
Long-time Rotarian Barry Marx says: “In my
41 years of membership of Rotary I have seen
more than 30 Paul Harris Fellows awarded by
Rotary Otorohanga and in my opinion it would
be safe to say there has not been a more worthy
recipient than Dr Burton.
“He exemplifies all the tenets of Rotary International and the Rotary Foundation which
has done more than US$1 billion of charitable
work in the field of health and humanity. John
is a most wonderful asset to Kawhia and the
Otorohanga district.”
Dr Burton’s contribution to the Kawhia community was documented in a citation read by Rotary’s assistant district governor Kevin Forgeson.
It stated: “. . . the community is extremely fortunate to have such a wonderful, caring and humble
doctor. Being on call 24/7 John’s only break is when
he leaves Kawhia for an event or a weekend.
“Kawhia is a low socio-economic area and
many times his patients are not charged at all
for his services. Often in the way of payment his
patients give a food koha which of course, is often
fish caught locally or home grown fruit/veges.
“John finds that despite some problems, a rural
practice can be very rewarding and the support
from the community makes it all worthwhile.
Well respected as a person, doctor and community
member, and Kawhia is extremely lucky to have
him and his family living in the community.”
Mr Forgeson also spoke of Dr Burton’s training as an ‘prime’ doctor for ACC callouts; his
employment of “trusted” local people as health
workers; his placement training of 4th and 6th
year medical students to give them “a taste” of
rural general practice; his voluntary work overseas in North Western Australia, West Africa
and Fiji among his numerous achievements and
accolades.
He is also one of the main drivers of a successful programme to educate residents about
diabetes prevention and the necessary lifestyle
changes to bring the incidence of diabetes down
in the community.
Dr Burton is rather embarrassed by the award.
“It is an honour, however, I am somewhat embarrassed in that I get the limelight whereas this
is very much a team effort, my wife Sue is a wonderful support to me. Medicine is a complicated
field and it is nice to have this encouragement.”
Dr Burton says Rotary is an organisation he
admires.
“They do such a good job of helping people.
We are now living in a fragmented society and
it would be great if younger people could grasp
their [Rotarians] sense of morality.”

best thing he has done is stay in Kawhia.
“Prior to me coming here the community
had had three short-term doctors which was
very hard for continuity of care. It is nice working somewhere that it has been hard to get a
permanent doctor.”
Known for his generosity in often not charging his patients, Dr Burton says that is a two-way
street.
“People are very considerate of us too. It is a
wonderful community to live in and people are
very supportive of us as a family.”
OTHER AWARDS
As well as the Paul Harris Fellow, Dr Burton
has had other prestigious awards bestowed on
him. In 2008, he received the Distinguished
Service Medal from the Royal New Zealand
College of General Practitioners, and in 2015,
the Eric Elder Memorial Award at the College
of GPs conference for the Kawhia Health Centre’s practice model of care and their work as a
teaching practice.
l The Paul Harris Fellow is named for the
founder of Rotary after he and three business
associates held the first meeting in Chicago in
1905. The fellows were established in Mr Harris’
honour in 1957 to express appreciation for the
contribution to the humanitarian and educational programmes of the Rotary Foundation.
Rotarians designate a Paul Harris Fellow to
recognise a person whose life demonstrates a
shared purpose with the objectives and mission
of the Rotary Foundation to build world understanding and peace.

World Cup
on display
WORLD rugby’s greatest prize the William Webb Ellis Trophy will be on display
when Heartland rugby’s two trophy holders
do battle in Te Kuiti this weekend.
King Country (Lochore Cup champions) will host Wanganui (Meads Cup
champions) at Rugby Park on Saturday in a
champion versus champion match in front
of the hallowed Rugby World Cup which
the All Blacks defended in 2015.
King Country Rugby Football Union
general manager Susan Youngman says the
cup’s mere presence is sure to add extra interest to what is already a highly anticipated
Heartland Championship match.
“It is really special to have the World
Cup here.”
Youngman encourages everyone to
come and take their photo with the Webb
Ellis Trophy at Rugby Park on Saturday.
“It’s a rare chance to get up close and
personal with the real trophy but some
rules do apply like you are not allowed to
touch it,” she says.
“That special honour is granted only for
the players who have won it.
“However, we are very excited to have it
here, it is a great honour and it gives everyone the opportunity that a lot of people in
New Zealand don’t get.
“So come along, support the Rams and
spend some time with the Rugby World
Cup.”
Saturday’s week four Heartland Championship match between King Country and
Wanganui kicks off at 2.30pm.

Balls celebrate icons
IF you wanted a symbol to help put Te Kuiti
on the map – it could be a toss-up between a
shearing handpiece and a rugby ball given the
Knights in our midst.
Te Kuiti Development Inc (TKDI) has chosen
a rugby ball.
The mini rugby balls signed by All Black brothers Sir Colin and Stan Meads, will be launched
at the King Country Rams versus Wanganui
Heartland match in the Meads brothers’ home
town on Saturday.
TKDI’s marketing officer Yvette Ronaldson is
excited about the group’s newest piece of merchandise.
“These balls are a celebration of our two local
rugby legends, and by producing them it shows
how important and special the Meads brothers
are to our community, which is definitely worth
celebrating,” says Mrs Ronaldson.
“A true legend remains relevant through the
years and this is especially true of Sir Colin and
Stan who have certainly stood the test of time and
contributed so much locally.”
Chairperson Jacky Fitzgerald agrees.
“These balls are a great, affordable collectable
rugby souvenir, and have been produced to promote our awesome town – Te Kuiti – Where Legends Are Made. Having the support of Sir Colin
and Stan to promote their legendary hometown,
is greatly appreciated.
“The balls have already proved very popular,

The balls will be launched at halftime during
Saturday’s game at Rugby Park, with some given

Brownies & Guides unit needs help
IT’S an age old institution and New Zealand’s
largest ‘girls only’ organisation.
It’s about helping girls and young women
reach their full potential and make a difference
in the world.
But in Te Kuiti . . . the iconic organisation is
in danger of closing due to a lack of members
and leaders. Te Kuiti Brownies and Guides are
currently undertaking a membership drive.
Brownies, aged between seven and nine years
and Guides 9-12 years are wanted. And there
are plenty of great reasons why your daughters
should join up.
Unit helper Tina Hitchen says: “There are lots
of great opportunities for the girls to achieve
through hands-on experiences. Brownies aim to
achieve their green, silver and gold Koru badges
in three years and as they progress they take on
more leadership roles supporting new girls.
“Old favourites are still in the programme including the Girl Guide biscuit patch and ANZAC
Day. However, new badges have been added for
interest areas like sport, music, science, conservation, food and adventure.”
Guides also achieve three Endeavour badges
during their time in the unit. The main areas
include the outdoors, community and exploring
‘my world’. There is a focus on camping skills
culminating in the chance to lead a Guide camp
for their unit before becoming Rangers.
Already local members have attended two
camps at Pirongia and Paterangi – joining with
neighbouring units – Te Awamutu and Taumarunui – to compete badges and challenges
together.
Mrs Hitchen says the girls learn at their own
pace through real experiences, games and experiments.
Helping them are the unit leaders. But those
too are needed. Te Kuiti Brownies and Guides
currently has two qualified leaders – Jenny Reinhardt and Gemma Reynolds.
Mrs Hitchen says: “Jenny is retiring at the end
of the year after several decades of Guiding so
we need new helpers to assist the girls with their
programmes. We need at least another two and
full training is provided along with support in
learning the ropes. It would be disappointing to
lose the use of the guide hall and resources built
up over many years.”
Guides and Brownies meet every Monday
during school terms from 4.30-6.30pm.

Menzshed gets
kids connected
OTOROHANGA Menzshed members have made a lasting connection with the students at
Otorohanga Primary School.
Acting principal Lois McGregor approached Darcy Lupton last month with a plan and a challenge
to build a large wooden version of the popular Connect 4 board game.
Up for the challenge and keen to support the local primary school Mrs McGregor says they
successfully created two. “The school paid for the wood supplies while the Menzshed supplied
the manpower,” she says. “The children, with help from board of trustees chairman Richard
Scott then coated them with dye and a coat of varnish to finish them off.
“They have been a great addition to our school as the children continue to play with them
every day and have competitions to outdo one another.” Mrs McGregor says the next project
the Menzshed members have been challenged with is creating wooden directional signs for
use at the school and painting hopscotch, four square and a draughts board on the concrete

Time to clean it up
T’S time to tackle litter.
Schools and the community are banding together to clean up Te Kuiti township as part of
the country’s Keep New Zealand Beautiful Week
initiative.
More than 30,000 Kiwis have registered to
join forces to take a stand against litter in their
communities. And on Sunday it’s Te Kuiti’s turn.
Organised by Te Kuiti Development Inc
(TKDI) committee members Michelle Freebairn and Jacky Fitzgerald, and Waitomo District
Council community development officer Donna
Macdonald, the clean-up begins at 10am.
Residents are asked to meet at the railway
buildings in Rora St at 9.30am.
“Our committee is trying to encourage the
community to take pride and ownership of our
town. The clean-up is a way of encouraging
locals to be proud of where they live,” says Mrs
Freebairn.
Local schools are right behind the country’s
clean-up, with students and staff from Te Kuiti
Primary, Centennial Park, Waitomo Caves, St
Joseph’s, Pukenui and Piopio Primary getting out
and about picking up litter.
The Benneydale Hall committee are also organising a clean-up while Waitomo District Council
staff will be at the Mangaokewa Reserve tonight.
“It’s great to see the schools involved as this
event helps educate our youth about taking care
of their surroundings,” says Mrs Freebairn.
Ms Fitzgerald is hoping families will join
Sunday’s event. “Last year’s clean-up was very
successful and it was awesome to see parents
and their kids there, so it would be great to have
families join us again this weekend. This is your
chance to help make Te Kuiti a legendary place
to live, work and play.

Sunday’s clean-up will be in the CBD and along
the Mangaokewa Stream’s banks. Last year’s cleanup netted 160kgs of litter. Gloves and rubbish bags
will be provided.
If the weather is wet, the clean-up will be postponed until Sunday, September 25.

My family and I have resided in the
Otorohanga district for more than
15 years. I have been married for 20
years while enjoying raising our two
daughters locally.

our community has been at a high
level mainly through sports. Early on I
spent much of my time re-introducing
two sporting codes back to our local
residents, these being athletics and
boxing.

Relay,
women’s
expo,
schools
and
extensive sporting teams. One of my
proudest endeavors is creating the only
local inter-community annual sporting
event.
‘Battle of the Towns’ has brought many
locals together in the past four years
whilst raising thousands of dollars
for women, children and abused
animals. Community networking to
organise these events is intensive and
educational.
Otorohanga Ward
Otorohanga has been home to my
family and me for close to 20 years. As
a passionate community advocate and
a current member of the Otorohanga
Community Board I am proud of
where we stand as a district, of our
achievements and of our progressive,
vibrant and innovative community.
The energy and passion I’ve injected
towards members of our community
suits the team roles required within
council.
Having served three years on the
community board I am now seeking your
support for election to council. I believe
that it is at this level where I can do and
achieve more for you, for our youth, for
local businesses and for our district as a
whole.
With two post-grad qualifications, a
background in business, management
and governance I believe I have the
necessary skills, knowledge, drive,
experience and vision to contribute at
a strategic level, to add value to our
district and to ensure the effective

statement is to be the best rural council
in New Zealand which is a great mission

love to see this changed to the best
rural town in New Zealand, and I would
love to be part of the team that makes

trade was instrumental in helping me

I then left town to become workshop
manager at a motorcycle store in
Matamata, quickly realising how
incredible the Otorohanga community

early 20s and started our business

Experience. As a recently retired
primary school principal after 20 years’
service in Piopio, I am experienced
in the governance role required of
a councillor: Writing, following and
monitoring strategic plans, setting
and monitoring budgets, writing
and monitoring policies, employing

staff, complying with government
acts and policies, and I have a very
clear understanding of the difference
between governance and management.
Energy. A six day per week exercise
plan and being retired means I have the
energy and the time to spend.

priority is to

decline in

about the rapid increases, in power
pricing methods which need to be
addressed.
Youth – we must give our youth the tools
and resources, before they leave high
school. I also want all our students in
the region to have a full driver’s licence,
full first aid, basic water safety and a
safe place to meet (eg an internet cafe
which would be useful for assignments,
studies.)
I haven’t got all the answers, and I do not
pretend to know.
But I know who has – You!

“NEW ZEALANDERS need to make their
vote count in the upcoming local council elections if they want to influence how their regions
are led and governed.”
Local Government New Zealand chief executive Malcolm Alexander says voting papers for
district and regional councils will be posted out
to eligible voters from tomorrow.
“Local government shapes the place that you
live,” he says.
“It’s the pavements you walk on, the roads
where you drive, the water in your shower, and
the parks, libraries and swimming pool where
you take the kids.
“It’s also about culture, sports events, economic development and much more. It is your
democratic right to take part in electing those
members who best reflect the values and local
priorities of the community you live in.
“So all eligible voters should have their say via
the ballot box to get the people they want around
council tables. This is the best way to see the
changes you want in your community.”
Mr Alexander says as citizens, voters play a
part in electing people who will make “important decisions about how public resources will
be allocated”.
“In 2016 we’re very keen to get voter turnout
above 50%.
“That means reversing a downward trend.
“But we believe New Zealanders simply need
some gentle reminders about the importance of
participating in the democratic process at both
local and national levels.”
JUST DO IT
Research has shown that a large proportion of
people who do not vote intend to do so but are
simply too busy or forget.
“I would encourage people to vote as soon as
possible after receiving your voting papers in the
post,” says Mr Alexander.
“Don’t put them to one side or stick them to
the fridge where they will get covered up by other
stuff. Sit down and fill them in as soon as you
can, then post them back.
“By voting you can make a real difference and
give your support to those candidates who have
the values and policies to strengthen local economies and revitalise our communities.”
Voting papers must be posted or hand delivered in time to reach their local council’s electoral
officer by midday on October 8.
If you are not enrolled you may still vote, however, you will need to contact your local council’s
electoral officer in order to make a casting vote.

With my wife Andrea, I live on a 225ha farm
on Tate Road, just out of Te Kuiti. A lifetime of
farming and governance of other businesses
has given me a well-rounded perspective on
the needs of sound governance. I have enjoyed
being your mayor for the past six years, after two
terms as a rural councillor, starting back in 2004.
When elected as mayor in 2010, I with council,
set some clear goals for the direction of the
Waitomo district, to make it a “vibrant and

to light up Rugby Park in Te Kuiti on Saturday.
Both teams are unbeaten in 2016, both are
defending Heartland champions (Meads and
Lochore cups) and both will be determined to
win.
At the TAB, Wanganui (Meads Cup holders)
are clear favourites to win the entire competition
at $1.85 compared to King Country (Lochore
Cup holders) at $12, but anything can happen
especially when the Rams play at home in front
of hundreds of vocal supporters.

OTOROHANGA College’s A netball team
certainly punched above their weight at the
recent Upper North Island Secondary Schools
Tournament.
Held in Auckland from August 29-September
2, Otorohanga went into the tournament, which
attracts more than 100 teams from the Upper
North Island, aiming to make the top 16 out of
32 teams in the B grade.
With a record of five wins, one draw and four
losses in round robin play, they then aimed for
a top 8 spot, and then the top 5 giving them a
chance at promotion to the A grade.
However, losses to Morrinsville and Pakuranga colleges meant they had to settle for playing
off for seventh or eighth position.
In the play-off against Keri Keri High School,
Otorohanga proved the stronger team finishing
the tournament in seventh place – improving
their ranking on 2015 by 11 places.
Teacher Karen Flay says the team’s seventh
placing was an “absolute feat for a small rural
school such as Otorohanga”.
“Playing schools with 1000-2500 students and
that have 22 to 30 netball teams, and coming
away with wins or giving them tough competitive
games was pleasing.

NOMINATIONS are now open to celebrate
and salute Waitomo’s high sporting achievers.
The annual Waitomo District Sports Awards
will be held at the Les Munro Centre on November 21 when the district honours its most
decorated athletes, coaches, administrators and
referees who represented Waitomo during 2016.
But you’ll have to be quick, as nominations
close next week on Thursday, September 23.
Each Waikato district from Hamilton to Taupo
has its own awards evening with category winners going forward to the prestigious Brian Perry
Waikato Regional Sports Awards in Hamilton
held on January 26.
The categories are: service to sport, administrator, club, official, team, coach, secondary
school student contribution to sport, junior
sportsperson and sportsperson.
“This year’s awards season comes with a focus
around our Olympic athletes as well as another
successful sporting year in Waitomo,” says Sport
Waikato co-ordinator for the Waitomo district
Dede Downs.
“We have lots to celebrate, being an Olympic
years creates more interest in sport – it reminds
us to recognise sporting talent and volunteers
within our region.

Fagan joins the master class
FORMER New Zealand Merino champion
James Fagan has joined his father John as an elite
Master Shearer.
The father and son are the first father and son
duo to achieve the feat.
Alongside world champion Rowland Smith,
Fagan was made a Master Shearer at Shearing
Sports New Zealand’s annual conference in
Christchurch last month.
Both men have represented New Zealand in
the United Kingdom and Trans-Tasman test
series’ and both are also world record holders.
But while Smith (29) is at the peak of his career
seeking to defend his title at the World Championships in Invercargill next year, Fagan (37) has
retired from competition.
Growing up in the King Country, the son of the
1984 Golden Shears open champion left school
at 16 to start a career in the shearing industry.
He is now farming in Raglan.
While becoming one of the best, he was one
of many who had to battle long and hard in the
shadow of his uncle Sir David Fagan.
But now, after being named a true master of
his craft , he joins an elite group of the country’s
best ever shearers including North King Country
greats Sir David, his father John, Alan MacDonald, Paul Grainger, Digger Balme and Dean Ball.
PROUD MOMENT
To become a master shearer several criteria
needs to be achieved throughout a shearer’s
career and then their application has to be approved by more than 80% of the Shearing Sports
NZ national committee – making it a very rare
and coveted accomplishment.
“It was a bit of a surprise when I found out
because I never thought I’d be put in that elite
category,” says Fagan.
“To be named alongside some of the other guys
that I looked up to is a huge honour.
“And to become the first father-son combination is really special as well.”
Fagan has elected to be bestowed the industry’s
highest honour at next year’s New Zealand Shearing Championships in Te Kuiti where he will be
presented with a special plaque.
“To be in that group it puts a lot of satisfaction
on all the years of hard work and all the sweat
that you’ve lost over the past 20 years working
in the sheds.
“It actually makes it all worthwhile.”
He was nominated for the Master Shearer
honour by the NZ Shears committee.
STELLAR CAREER
Following 30 wins in the lower classes, including the 1997 Golden Shears Senior title, Fagan
had 10 wins in more than 110 finals in an open
class career spanning 18 years.
They included the New Zealand Merino
Championship in Alexandra in 2008, one of the
few titles that eluded Sir David.
He followed it with the New Zealand Circuit
title in Te Kuiti six months later, becoming only
the third shearer to win both titles, and the first
to do it in one season.
Other highlights include 11 appearances in
the National Circuit Final at the Golden Shears
being runner-up four times. His best effort abroad was his 2009 Royal
Welsh open final win during his one New Zealand

nine-hour strong wool lambs record of 2897
shorn in Turangi on January 11, 2005.

MANIAPOTO Rugby Sub-Union’s fairytale
return to competition after 14 years away fell
just short of claiming the Stan Meads Cup in
Otorohanga on Saturday.
Taking on perennial powerhouse Te Awamutu
Sub-Union in the final, Maniapoto were given
a rude awakening as the defending champions
scored 21 points in as many minutes.
From there the green and whites were forced to
play catch up and slowly worked their way back
into the game trailing 21-7 at halftime.
After some wise words from coach Wayne
Fraser, Maniapoto began gaining on Te Awamutu, at one point closing in to within 12 points
at 21-33, but the home team finished strongly
with two late tries to retain the title of SMC
champions 45-21.
By going through the season unbeaten, Te
Awamutu also retained the coveted Peace Cup
for the 2016 season.
In the bowl final, Central Bay of Plenty outclassed Thames Valley B 43-28.
Both victorious teams were presented their
trophies by former All Black Stan Meads of Te
Kuiti.
CLASS ACT
SMC founder Neil Macrae says Te Awamutu
were a “class act” in the final.
“Te Awamutu started extremely well but Maniapoto slowly clawed their way back into the
game before halftime,” he says.
“In the second half, Maniapoto scored a couple
of tries and made a contest of it until the dying
minutes when Te Awamutu pulled away.
“So the better team won on the day but no-one
can fault Maniapoto’s effort.
“For a team that was put together at short
notice to make it all the way to the final is a
great result.”
Macrae says seeing the return of Maniapoto to
the playing field was the highlight of this year’s
competition.
“Saturday’s final regenerated a lot of interest
and support that Maniapoto used to have,” he
says.
“They haven’t had a huge following throughout
the season but by playing in the final, it got a lot of
people’s attention and a really good crowd came
through to watch them.
“So the resurgence of Maniapoto has been a
big plus this year.”
After six years of Stan Meads Cup play, Macrae
says the competition is still going strong with
plenty of positives such as the return of Maniapoto to build on in 2017.

apply for financial assistance through the
Rural Travel Fund.
The Rural Travel Fund is designed to help
subsidise travel for junior teams participating in local sport competition.
Application for the Rural Travel Fund is
open to rural sports clubs and rural school
teams with young people aged between 5
and 19 years who require subsidies to assist with transport expenses to local sporting competitions.
PLEASE NOTE: The Rural Travel Fund
is not for the purpose of travel to regional or national events.
Individuals are NOT eligible to apply for
funding.
Council has available $9,765 for the first

Firefighters get extra help
KAWHIA Volunteer Fire Brigade members
have been armed with some extra firefighting
artillery thanks to the Fonterra Grass Roots Fund.
Having recently benefitted from the Fonterra
initiative, the brigade put their $3500 in funding towards buying a portable 5000-litre dam, a
monsoon bucket filler and two backpack sprayers.
Because of their isolated location, the equipment will help fight fires where access to water
can be very limited.
Chief fire officer Callan Stewart says it’s the
brigade’s duty to protect farmers, their families
and their land from fire and if they ran out of
water – a difficult situation could quickly turn
into a disaster.
He says in New Zealand’s urban centres, it’s
usually simple for firefighters to tap into the town
water supply, but it’s a bigger challenge for the
Kawhia brigade fighting a bush or scrub fire in
an isolated rural area.
“The more farmland you lose, the more it costs
the farmer,” says Mr Stewart.
“So if we have the correct and most up-to-date
equipment to fight these fires, the damage that
can be incurred to the environment, wildlife and
occupants is reduced significantly.
“The Fonterra Grass Roots Fund gave us an
extra piece of artillery.”
BIG DIFFERENCE
Mr Stewart says the extra equipment has made
a big difference to the brigade.

“We can dump the water
from the fire engine into
the dam and use a portable
pump to fight the fire while
the engine returns to the
nearest water source to fill
up again. We do that until a
water tanker arrives.”
“The
fund gave

ON “THEIR OWN”
Mr Stewart says as Kawhia’s an
hour’s drive from Hamilton and 45 minutes
from Te Awamutu and Otorohanga, it’s not
unusual for brigade members to be “on their
own” fighting a fire for the first hour until backup arrives.

Once the fire is almost under
control, the backpack sprayers
are used to dampen down hot
spots in burnt out areas, preventing the blaze from taking
off again and causing more
damage.
The new equipment came into
its own at Hauturu recently when
there was a fire in bush and scrub next
to a forest block.
“We needed to get it out quickly before it got
to the forest and we threw all our resources at it,”
says Mr Stewart.
“Having a constant water supply means we are
self-sufficient and can get the job done.”
The 10 men and women who volunteer for
the brigade responded to more than 60 callouts
last year and have already attended 23 this year.
