Facing a bill of $85,000 to replace the badlyworn astro turf at the Rangipare St courts, members have launched a major raffle to raise the much needed funds, thanks to the support of local car dealership Prescott Holden. The dealership has stepped up to the baseline to serve up the prize for the raffle which will see one lucky ticket holder drive away in a brand new Holden Spark valued at $18,800. Club president Gareth Udy says: “The club has welcomed the assistance of the team at Prescott Holden in helping us negotiate a deal where we can raise a fair chunk of the money needed for the refurbishment of the courts.” Prescott Holden director Paul Prescott says: “We are more than happy to assist in supplying the vehicle as we see the upgrade to the tennis courts as a positive move for the sport in Otorohanga.” Among the raffle’s prize pool is a television, barbecue and various gift vouchers from local businesses. Mr Udy is hopeful the public of Otorohanga will get behind the fundraiser. “The tennis courts are a valuable asset not only to our members but also to visitors to the town. “Regardless of whether you’re serious about the game or like the occasional hit out people still want to have a good facility to do so.” The raffle will be drawn under police supervision at a function at the Otorohanga Club on October 7. An auction will also be held to boost the club’s fundraising. Thompson-Tupe Whanau Te Kuiti Waitomo News Tuesday, July 26, 2016 3 Programme focuses on attitude TE KUITI resident Rodney Bell has found himself the centre of attention again. Already known for his campaign to gain better access for disabled people like himself, on Te Kuiti’s streets (Waitomo News, May 3) it’s Mr Bell’s passion for dance which saw him being filmed last week as a part of TV ONE’S special interest programme Attitude. At 18 years old Mr Bell left Te Kuiti to pursue his dream of dancing in America only to have it change dramatically following a motorcycle accident in 1991 which left him paralysed and confined to a wheelchair. He was 20 years old. Television producer Emma Calveley says: “We first filmed Rodney almost 10 years ago when he was at the height of his career working fulltime as a dancer with the prestigious Axis mixed ability dance group in San Francisco. “Shortly after that we heard that Rodney was living rough on the streets of San Francisco. “We tried to visit him but couldn’t even find a contact for him as he was moving from place to place and not in a good way.” Now back living in his home town, Mr Bell is dancing once again. His solo dance performance – Meremere – is based around his journey of carving a mere for a cousin’s 40th birthday. “It was my first Maori mission and brought up a lot of memories,” says Mr Bell. “The dance routine is based around the meremere taking shape along with my own emotional journey then and in San Francisco.” Meremere premieres at the Tempo Dance Festival in Auckland from October 4-16. TALENTED PERFORMER Mrs Calverley says: “Rodney is one of the most engaging people we’ve ever filmed and a talented performer.” She says the television segment explores the progression of Mr Bell’s performance which is about his memories, and particularly his time living on the streets in San Francisco. “But this documentary is also about Rodney coming home to Te Kuiti. Since his accident, nearly 20 years ago, he’s barely lived at home. “His crusade for better access for disabled people is about giving back to his local community and reconnecting,” she says. Attitude screens on TV One on August 28, at 8.30pm. TALENTED and engaging is how the film crew of TV One’s Attitude programme describe Te Kuiti disabled dancer Rodney Bell. Last week the crew visited Mr Bell to film a segment for their August 28 programme. THE Otorohanga Kiwi House’s Great Spotted Kiwi ‘Atu’ is expected to undergo surgery this week after suffering health issues for some time. PHOTO SUPPLIED Well loved kiwi to undergo surgery ‘ATU’ the Otorohanga Kiwi House’s Great Spotted Kiwi is expected to undergo surgery this week. Kiwi House manager Jo Russell says 14-yearold Atu has had health issues related to her egg production in recent years. “We’ve been monitoring her closely and last week, we made the decision to send her to Wildbase Veterinary Hospital based at Massey University for the possible removal of her oviduct and ovaries. “This is specialist surgery and we do not have the capacity to carry this out on site. “Sometimes with kiwi there can be issues within the oviduct that cause a bird to lay partially or complete soft shelled eggs, and this can lead to scarring in the oviduct which can exacerbate the situation over time,” says Mrs Russell. She says Atu is in a stable condition with the Wildbase team monitoring her early egg production stages via ultrasound. “If there are no complications, we expect her to make a full recovery. “Atu was hatched at the kiwi house in 2001 and although regarded as the resident kiwi Ninja, delivering strong karate kicks to keepers’ shins in defence of her territory she is well loved by the community. “We have been overwhelmed with the comments and phone calls from community members checking on how she’s doing,” says Mrs Russell. As a part of Otorohanga’s 10 day celebrations centred around the introduction of free Wifi in the town’s CBD the kiwi house will hold an open day with free entry for Otorohanga residents between 9am-5pm on Sunday. waitomonews.co.nz any time . . . anywhere 4 Waitomo News Tuesday, July 26, 2016 In brief Hat auction postponed AN unforeseen clash of events resulted in the last minute postponement of the Waitomo Caves Fundraising Committee’s charity Hat Auction on Friday night. Enrolment update packs were mailed to 3.1 million people at the end of June. About 20,000 were returned as ‘gone, no address’. Computer gift helps society NEW technology will assist Otorohanga Historical Society members to catalogue the memories of yesteryear. The donation of a new computer to the society this week from the Web Access Waikato Trust will ensure easy access to all of the society’s collection. Society president Nan Owen says most of the Kakamutu Rd museum’s records are presently kept on her home computer, with some on an old secondhand computer obtained from the Otorohanga District Council in 2008. She says transferring the book ‘Footsteps Through Time, written by herself which chronicles major events in the district, onto the new computer means society members can add to the living document. Web Access Waikato Trust (formerly Computers in Homes) works with low decile schools helping students and their families use the internet, email and computers at home, school and work. Chairman Shane Hobson says the trust is more than happy to assist after hearing that the society was in need of a computer upgrade. “We will certainly be spending some time with them to assist in getting the best out of this computer.” Mrs Owen says she is looking forward to inputting the data. “I am more than happy to have everything in one place as there is so much historical information, and having it here, there and everywhere means it could get forgotten about and lost.” Do you need to print, photocopy or fax a document? WAITOMO YOUR NEWS, YOUR VIEWS ews Waitomo News Tuesday, July 26, 2016 5 Changing habits to save lives GETTING people into the habit of buckling up and putting their mobile phones away is the focus of a new police road safety campaign. Police say seatbelt use is a major issue with more than 57 deaths between 2012-2014, on average per year, associated with a restraint not being worn. Last year that rose to 92 deaths. Between January and March this year 41% of vehicle occupants killed in crashes were not wearing a seatbelt. Ministry of Transport data shows wearing a seatbelt reduces your chance of death or serious injury in a crash by at least 40%. National manager of Road Policing superintendent Steve Greally says: “It takes no time to put on a seatbelt and wearing one could save your life. “So, regardless of what type of vehicle you are in, why wouldn’t you buckle up? It’s a nonbrainer.” ‘Operation Habit’ will run throughout the country until August 7. Mr Greally says motorists will also be reminded of the risks of driver distractions. “Distractions come in many forms including changing the car stereo, unrestrained pets, arguing children, eating and drinking and applying make-up but a particular concern is talking, texting and checking emails on a mobile phone while you are on the move. COMPLETE ATTENTION “Driving requires complete attention. Anything that diverts a driver’s attention for more than a few seconds can significantly increase the likelihood of a crash or near crash.” Although the law allows the use of handsfree mobile phones, police recommend drivers minimise the potential for distraction by getting into the habit of switching their phones off while driving, or pulling over to make or receive calls. “As well as increasing the risk of harm to yourself and others, if you are caught using a mobile phone while driving you could face an infringement fine of $80 and 20 demerit points,” says Mr Greally. “Police cannot do this alone – road safety is A 47-year-old Hamilton man died at the scene of an early morning crash on SH3 south of Te everyone’s reponsbility.” Kuiti on June 4. FILE PIC High Waikato road fatalities NEW Zealand’s road toll is steadily increasing year on year, while those in other countries remain relatively steady. And, the Waikato region is the hardest hit with 24% of all fatalities – 36 – despite a raft of safety measures backed up with promotional campaigns. As a result the Waikato Regional Transport Committee is targeting a 50% reduction in roadrelated fatalities compared to the current annual five year average (2004-08) of 79 deaths, by 2040. This means that by 2040, the committee is working to achieve no more than 39 deaths per annum in the region. At July 25 the country’s national road toll stood people die in crashes. at 186. It also found trucks were over represented in serious crashes with deaths from crashes involving trucks making up 18% of the five year average road toll. Most people (81%) who died in truck crashes were not truck drivers, but other road users. The report found that about 30% of fatalities in 2014 could have been avoided if the person had been wearing a seatbelt or helmet. As part of a 10-day initiative called ‘Always Connected’, the Kiwiana Capital is launching free public WiFi on Thursday evening to encourage people to stop and spend time in the town. The free WiFi, which can be accessed in the town’s CBD, will be launched with the single push of a button by Otorohanga deputy mayor Deborah Pilkington at the Village Green at 6pm. The launch event, which begins at 4.30pm, includes live entertainment, food stalls and giveaways. MANY EVENTS When the button is pushed it will trigger a series of events around the town including the ‘My Snow Stop’ promotions on Friday and August 5 (see story page 9), the Kiwi House’s Open Day on Sunday, a candlelight service to remember loved ones on August 2, plus a free community movie night on August 6 and Pokemon Go hunt. Otorohanga District Council executive assistant David Dowd says the initiative is all about bringing people together. “Always Connected is a Facebook page that has been created to bring everyone from our community, no matter where they David live, together,” he says, “If someone has a tie to Otorohanga, even if they now live overseas, this is a central place they can visit to stay connected. “The reason the title ‘Always Connected’ was used is because we are at the junction of two highways and when we switch on the free public WiFi, we will literally be connected to the world.” Mr Dowd says the ‘My Snow Stop’ is designed to promote Otorohanga as the central stop for passing skiers on their way to the Whakapapa ski fields. “We’ll be offering them coffee, food and there’ll be digital signage all along the highway,” he says. TAKE A BREAK “We are giving them every reason to stop here and take a break and the WiFi links into that because they can check the snow report before continuing with their trip. “The goal is that if we can stop them twice and they go to the snow every weekend then we’ve got them for life. “And by having regular winter traffic, the businesses get busier, they employ more local people and so the benefits continue to grow.” Bringing the town together on the final night of celebrations, Mr Dowd says the free movie night at the Village Green will be “huge” including free popcorn donated by the Otorohanga Business Association. “A lot of sponsors are putting in to make the night fun for everyone,” he says. “There’ll be a big screen, great sound and the movie of choice will be chosen by visitors to the Always Connected Facebook site. “And if this is a success we will be rolling it out every month.” Aside from promoting Otorohanga and Dowd creating more business opportunities, Mr Dowd says the main objective behind ‘Always Connected’ is improving the lives of local residents. “By harnessing a very simple idea such as providing free WiFi we hope to turn it into something that will make a difference for all of our people,” he says. “This is all about our town and making it better for our people and our visitors.” Another benefit of the WiFi service is live streaming cam- “...and so the benefits continue to grow.” OTOROHANGA mayor Max Baxter is delighted with the district’s 10-day initiative - ‘Always Connected’ - starting on Thursday which includes free public WiFi in the town’s CBD. And although members have already collected many books, more are needed. Convener Jim Millar says: “This year the quality of books being donated is exceptional. “There are some real gems from some top fiction authors – mysteries, romance, biographies, reference and sporting books – there is something for everyone.” The Rotary book sale now in its 30th year, has raised on average between $1000 and $1500 each year for community projects. Rotarian Les Phillips from Kawhia is an old hand at running the sale, having collected books for the sale for many years, and will be there again helping out on the day. “There has been a resurgence of people wanting to hold a book rather than the new electronic devices and this year book hunters should be satisfied with what we have to offer,” says Mr Phillips. “However, in order to make September’s book sale successful, we need more books, and lots of them.” In the past book sale proceeds have benefitted numerous local groups and initiatives such as the kiwi house, apprenticeship training, youth exchanges and helped fund new cricket nets at the Otorohanga Domain to name a few. Mr Millar says this year’s recipient has yet to be decided. Books can be dropped at Otorohonda on Te Kanawa St, or contact Mr Phillips. Government scraps parental programme A GOVERNMENT funded early childhood programme that has helped tens of thousands of parents guide their children’s formative years is to be scrapped. PAFT – Parents As First Teachers – has supported Kiwi families, including North King Country parents, for the past 25 years and is administered by the Ministry of Social Development. Social Development Minister Anne Tolley says from the end of September the Government is moving its PAFT funding to a “more targeted programme.” PAFT has been running since 1991 and is offered in 36 locations around the country. It involves parent educators making personal visits to families to guide and advise them as their children grow and develop, with individual programmes tailored for families. I think what we’ve discovered recently with a lot of these sorts of programmes is they’re not having the impact on the highest needs families. “So we understand that it’s now a focus on investing in the families that need the help and assistance the most.” Mrs Tolley says: “Yes, some families will lose the service that they had, and we will do what we can over the next few years to try to fill some of those gaps. “This move means some vulnerable families who were currently missing out will be able to MASPORT PRESIDENT MOWER get support. ” STIHL BG 56 C-E Current PAFT contracts have been Blower extended until the end of September, so providers have time to work through the transition phase. On Friday (July 29) and August 5, the Otorohanga District Council is holding a ‘My Snow Stop’ campaign in the conjunction with the district’s free WiFi launch – Always Connected – encouraging all Auckland and surrounding traffic to drop into Maniapoto St and take a break. Fatigue stops will be set up in the CBD at the Village Green offering food, drinks and information for drivers. During the past few months the council, with support from Otorohanga Police, Otorohanga College sports teams and the Standeasy Coffee Cart, has been running a series of fatigue related stops targeting the Auckland ski traffic driving through our area. Thanks to local landowners three stops have been held at the site of the former Tihiroa School on SH39. All three have been hugely successful, and we have spoken to hundreds of people and had some amazingly positive feedback. Let’s hope the message is spread and our Otorohanga roads become a safer place to be on over the weekends. EDUCATION The aim is to educate drivers on the signs of, and consequences of, driving while fatigued. In 2014, fatigue was identified as a contributing factor in 31 fatal crashes, 106 serious injury crashes and 400 minor injury crashes. These crashes resulted in 33 deaths, 159 serious injuries and 539 minor injuries. The total social cost of crashes involving driver fatigue was about $268 million; this is about 8% of the social cost associated with all injury crashes. Fatigue is a physiological condition that can occur long before you fall asleep at the wheel. On Friday, Kio Kio School’s refurbished recreation centre was transformed into a temporary ice skating rink. The opportunity to go ice skating attracted youngsters from as far afield as Te Awamutu and Taumarunui, who along with their parents took to the ice for some family fun. Since 2014 Matamata-based Ice Skate Tour owners Robin and Miriam de Goeij have travelled around the Waikato-Bay of Plenty and Auckland regions with their rink that has about 97% the same gliding capacity as natural ice. Mr de Goeji says: “The rink’s surface is similar to a kitchen chopping board and less cold and slippery than most ice rinks.” Children who were on the ice were unanimous in their praise saying ice skating was an “awesome experience.” The rink is also a fundraiser for Kio Kio School with 20% of all entry fees returned to the school. The last public session is today between 3pm6pm, before the rink heads to Morrinsville School. ICE and bubbles accompanied by the soundtrack from the Disney movie Frozen made the day for Tasmin White (left) and Shae Lyons from Maihiihi as they tried ice skating for the first time. SLIP sliding away on the ice and loving it were Michelle and Michayla Carr from Rangiatea. 12 Waitomo News Tuesday, July 26, 2016 FARM SERVICES TO ADVERTISE HERE, PLEASE CALL ROCHELLE OR SAM ON 07 878 1188 FAGAN SHEARING FAGAN SHEARING FARMERS YOU JUST CAN’T BEAT ‘EM! Waitomo district co-ordinator Dede Downs says Sport Waikato can lend a hand to sporting organisations, clubs and schools at a local level through its KiwiSport Regional Partnership Fund. Downs says local groups can apply for funds to help launch sporting projects for youth. KiwiSport aims to give more kids, more opportunities and better skills to be involved with organised sport. Projects should have an emphasis on establishing and delivering sporting opportunities outside of curriculum time (eg: lunch time, after school, weekends or during school holidays) and target youth who currently do not play sport or have dropped out. Another focus for KiwiSport is projects involving girls aged 10-18, and youth in rural communities as well as reducing barriers to youth participation in sport. Two funds are available to kickstart local sports initiatives. The Community Partnership Fund allows sporting organisations, school clusters and clubs to apply for funding for projects that target community needs. YOUR NEWS YOUR VIEWS WAITOMO ews YOUR NEWS, YOUR VIEWS 20 Waitomo News Tuesday, July 26, 2016 WAITOMO ews Final down to the wire A DRAMATIC ending to the King Country club rugby final on Saturday, saw home team Taupo Sports become the first team to lift the Meads Shield championship title. Played in rain at Owen Delany Park, more than 600 people braved the conditions and were rewarded with an epic battle that went down to the final play of the game. For the first 10 minutes, defending champions Waitomo battered Taupo’s try line with wave after wave of attacking phases until finally crashing over from close range to give themselves a perfect start. Dean Church’s try went unconverted for a 6-0 lead after 15 minutes – but it was short lived. Within five minutes, Taupo pounced on a loose lineout throw to score their first try and soon after halfback Zayn Tipping swooped on a dropped ball to scamper 40 metres and touch down under the posts. Tipping converted his own try and by the half hour mark Taupo led 14-6. Waitomo responded with a Whakataki Cunningham penalty to narrow the gap 14-8, but the home surged ahead immediately after when Tipping chipped and chased to set up a brilliant counter attacking try to first five Cam Robinson just before halftime. The try was converted for a commanding 22-8 lead at the break. defenders to slide in out wide for his second try of the final. Converted by Cunningham, the visitors were back within striking range at 22-16. Dominating territory and possession, Waitomo camped themselves in Taupo’s half and eventually had the throw into a 5m lineout. It was won and they spread the ball to the other side of the field for replacement back Peter George Rata to dive over in the corner and tie the scores. SCORE LEVELLED Cunningham’s conversion attempt hit the upright and all was square at 22-22. What followed was 15 minutes of classic finals footy as both teams went end to end looking for the decisive score, but numerous handling errors hampered any serious try scoring opportunities. With time up on the clock and both teams’ supporters at full voice, Taupo launched one more raid. The boys’ tickers and wanting to do it for each other got us over the line and to do it in front of our home crowd means everything.” Taupo Sports has featured in the past four King Country club finals winning two in 2014 (in Te Kuiti) and 2016.
