What a great time to go for a car ride! That top can finally come down, those windows can be opened, and we can enjoy some fresh air. I hope you’re taking some time in your Porsche to enjoy the season! As we wrap up many of our driving events for the year, we’ll also take the time to do a little celebrating. Our annual Founders’ Day Celebration (this year celebrating 49 years of the Maverick Region) is taking place on Saturday, November 12th at the Southlake Hilton. Several Porsches will be on display in the banquet hall, and you may even spot a 356 or two! There will be a Silent Auction for many Porsche-related items PLUS a fun Casino night (both benefiting our charity, the Hope Shelter in Mineral Wells). I hope you have already made your reservations [mav. pca.org] and plan on joining us! Our next celebration is our Holiday Party on Friday, December 2nd starting at 7 p.m. at the Clubhouse at Heritage (where we also hold our All Member Party at the end of January). There’s a catered dinner by Macaroni Grill and lots of camaraderie with your fellow *Porschephiles. Sign up by going to our website (mav. pca.org) and clicking on the link on the calendar. It’ll be a blast! Then don’t forget our last Sunday Drive of the year on Sunday evening, December 11th for our Christmas Lights Tour of Dallas. This is always a special (low-speed) drive, which is fun for the whole family (so feel free to bring your kids in the SUV, even if it isn’t a Porsche!) I look forward to seeing you at one of our upcoming events! 2 Mav of the Month November’s Mav of the month goes to Madhu Rao, our volunteer Club Secretary, who single-handedly drove the implementation, tabulation and presentation of our Member Survey this year (you may have seen his article on the survey results in September’s Slipstream.) Thanks to his efforts, we received responses from 190 members (that’s a response rate of over 15%, folks!) with some great suggestions to help us grow. We’ve already implemented the monthly email with the following month’s events and we’re adjusting the schedule to avoid competing events (just two of your many suggestions.) Madhu- you’re a forwardthinker who is always working on continuous improvement. That helps each member get more from the club, and that’s what it’s all about. John presented the first update on behalf of Carey Spreen regarding the upcoming Sunday Drive Rally on October 23. According to Carey the Rally will have several twists and turns for a total length of about 2 hours. Carey also presented an update regarding a special guest who will join us at Founders’ Day this year on Nov. 12. This guest’s family has a special involvement with the Maverick Region. Who is this special guest? Make plans to join us at Founders’ Day and this will be revealed to you! The Maverick Region has been very fortunate to have several guests join us at events this year. Jacques Krielen, from Amsterdam, will be joining us at Founders’ Day this year. We recently had another guest, David Owen, join us from Akron, Ohio. He participated in the May Driving Tour and the most recent Sunday Drive in September. Go ahead and raise your hand – how many of you would love to drive 1000 miles in your Porsche right now? Apparently David and another Maverick. You’ll find out his or her name shortly. Mike Brodigan reported that attendance at the September Drivers’ Education event was great with over 75 participants. He noted that plans for 2012 are in development with some new twists and turns to keep everyone excited. These include a combined 1 day DE and Time Trial as well as the “buy 3 get 1 free” promotion for advanced drivers. Jim Falgout reported that our financial position continues to improve and should continue to do so as advertising and club racing entrance 8 fees are collected in October. Robyn Howard noted that the October 1, Swap Meet at ZIMS was very successful with over 60 Mavericks in attendance. Apparently the donuts were well received, too! Ed Mullenix noted that the success of the recent Swap Meet may indicate that two Swap Meets could be held in a year, one in the spring and fall? Fellow Mavericks, what do you think about this? Pat Friend reiterated Jim’s point that efforts are underway to collect unpaid advertising fees. He noted that revenue from advertisers represents a significant portion of our budget. Madhu Rao noted that a full ballot is in place and that voting for the 2012 election will commence on October 11th. He is looking into developing a PDF of the ballot that can be sent out to the entire region via email to increase awareness and interest in the election. John Harvey described the recent Boxstoberfest event which was held in the Hill Country of Texas. Over 100 cars participated in the event; about half of these were from the Maverick Region. John also described the recent Sunday Driving Tour which included a visit to the Drivers’ Education session held at Motorsport Ranch. Over 40 cars made the journey and several were able to complete at least 5 parade laps around the 1.7 mile circuit. Fellow Mavericks described how much fun they had during the event. About 25% of the attendees were new to the Drivers’ Education experience. John Harvey thanked his co-organizer, Brendan Eagan, for all of his help with this event. Ditto that. Brendan Eagan described a new initiative to introduce the Maverick Region to new Porsche owners. He has developed a kit which contains Maverick Region membership brochures, a copy of the awardwinning Slipstream and Panorama magazines. This will help describe all of the benefits associated with PCA membership to new Porsche owners. Richard Bradley has introduced a 3 column format to Slipstream. This will enable the copy to be easier to read wherever you choose to read it! Wendy Shoffit described the recent PCA Escape event in Flagstaff Arizona. Speaking of driving, James Shoffit her husband and Zone 5 Representative, drove 1000 miles in one day to this event. I bet he raised his hand to my question above! Wendy noted that the event was very casual and a dozen Mavericks were present. She is looking forward to the PCA Escape event November 8-11, 2012, in Eureka Springs, Arkansas. This is truly a beautiful place to visit. Lastly, Wendy described the upcoming Maverick Region Club Race and the current registration is at 31 Porsches. Christy Payne described the upcoming Autocross & Time Trial banquet to be held on November 5th at Dave & Busters Restaurant in Frisco, Tx. Christy also described that she will be using a new software system called Punch Bowl to track invitations and RSVP’s to Maverick Region events. She noted that the Founders’ Day event this year will be sponsored by Autobahn Motors (thank you!) and will feature a lot of fun activities. I know I will be there! Lisa Steele noted with enthusiasm, a lot of ENTHUSIAM, that our region membership is now up to 2038 members! Wow! That is a new record and relates to the initiatives put forth by the membership team to contact new and renewal members. She also noted that a Halloween theme would be featured at the October Club Race. Sounds like fun. Teri and Charlie Davis were in attendance and described an upcoming initiative to review the current Maverick Region badge/ logo and decide on whether it should be changed/updated. An idea was raised to form a committee to review this more formally. Linda Bambina was enthusiastic (when is she not enthusiastic) about the upcoming Founders’ Day event. She has contacted several previous Selcer award winners to ensure their presence (in-person or virtually) at this year’s Founders’ Day event. Travis Howard (aka Gridmaster T) noted that the turnout was very good at the recent Autocross event in September and that the October events should be well attended in Mineral Wells. He noted the last Time Trial event of 2011 will be at Motorsport Ranch on October 23. Our guest attendee was Ryan Schall at this meeting. I met Ryan at a driving event earlier this year. It was great to hear his perspective on the Maverick Region. He noted that the number of benefits associated with PCA membership is exceptional, ranging from parts discounts at select retailers to free event participation and learning clinics. He noted that it is sometimes difficult to keep track of all of the activities. Ryan, we hear you. Thank you for your feedback. In August John Hamilton began a monthly email digest that lists all of the events on a single October 5, 2011 “page.” We hear this is making it easier for our membership. November 9 The Grey Eagle and the Yellow Cabriolet By Carey Spreen A A Brief History of the Richard F. Selcer Memorial Award nyone who has attended a Founders’ Day celebration, Maverick Region’s annual awards banquet/anniversary party, knows that, as part of the festivities, there is a very special presentation made by the Region President, known as the Richard F. Selcer Memorial Award. As the years go by, and as new members arrive and long-time members leave, fewer and fewer of us actually know the history behind this award. in Chattanooga, TN, and they moved to Ft. Worth in 1940 when he got a job as a pilot with American Airlines. When the US got involved in World War II, he enlisted with the Army Air Corps, and was stationed in the Pacific and later in Washington, DC. He was sometimes assigned to fly high-level military personnel to wartime conferences and other meetings. When the war ended in 1945, they moved back to Ft. Worth, and Dick picked up where he left off with American Airlines. Not long afterward the Selcers had two children, Janet Lee and Richard, Jr. The plaque on the award reads as follows: Richard F. Selcer Memorial Award Superior Performance and Dedication In 1964 they purchased a yellow 1961 356B Cabriolet, and the September 1965 issue of Slipstream welcomed Peggy and Richard Selcer as new members of the Maverick Region. They soon began participating in many of the events that the region hosted, including rallying, concours d’elegance, and the occasional gymkhana. In 1969, Dick was elected club Treasurer and held that office through 1971. He is said to have coined the phrase “We have money!” which has been repeated in uncounted Maverick Region Board Meetings over the years (and in fact to this day) by his successors. He was also known for his skill on the ukelele and other instruments, and sometimes led impromptu sing-alongs at club gatherings, including Board meetings! Maverick Region / PCA Dick Selcer (as many Mavericks later knew him in the 60s and early 70s) was born in Georgia and grew up near Chattanooga, Tennessee. He was a champion wrestler in high school, and later went on to own his own airplane, with which he used to barnstorm, a popular activity in the Peggy and Dick in front of the Yellow Cab. 30s. He would travel the southeast US, participating in flying exhibitions as well as selling rides in his plane to folks that had gathered to watch. Dick married his wife Peggy in 1937 10 The July 1970 issue of Slipstream contained a column titled “Getting to Know You,” which highlighted a few “active and outstanding Porsche enthusiasts,” two of whom were the Selcers. The column had this to say about them: “Dick and Peggy Selcer are known to all Maverick Region members for Peggy’s bubbly personality, Dick’s incomparable Treasurer’s reports, and their duets with the ukelele. They drive a ‘61 Cabriolet and Dick especially enjoys A wave from the past. working on it now that he has retired from nearly 30 years with American Airlines. As an American Airlines pilot, Dick has flown everything from DC2s to 707s. Dick has every Porsche lover’s dream of a garage for working on Porsches and assorted other cars. In his spare time he has been helping Peggy redecorate their Fort Worth home. Peggy is presently serving on the Telephone Committee for Porsche Club, which involves constantly calling to remind us all of meetings and events. The Selcers have two children: a son in college and a daughter who is married.” Many would have called Dick Selcer a “shadetree mechanic.” He enjoyed working on all manner of mechanical devices, from cars and motorcycles to lawn mowers and refrigerators. Basically he loved to tinker, although he did not have much, if any, formal training. The Selcer household always had several cars and other equipment in various states of repair. One of the cars that the family had for many years was a 1966 Pontiac GTO sporting a 389, which Dick also loved to work on. But the 356B was special. The yellow Cabriolet was not a daily driver, rather it was used for weekend drives and club events, and driven almost exclusively by Dick, unless one was granted special permission to get behind the wheel. He was also known to don his driving cap and give the occasional ride to the Selcer family poodles, Ci-Ci and Monet, who enjoyed standing on the passenger seat, paws on the armrest, their tiny tongues flapping in the wind. When Dick retired from American Airlines in December 1968, he joined the association of retired American Airlines pilots known as the Grey Eagles. Due to this association he was affectionately known to some Mavericks as The Grey Eagle. At around the time of his retirement, he began an association with Roger Chaney, a Maintainability Engineer with General Dynamics. Roger was already a long-time Maverick Region member, and went on to become the PCA National Technical Advisor for many years. Slipstreams from the 60s and 70s are chockfull of Roger’s technical articles, and his expertise was well-regarded throughout PCA in general. Roger was, in some ways, a sharp contrast to Dick; he was a trained engineer, very meticulous and precise, who always followed procedures by the book. But like Dick, he was an avid lover of anything Porsche. It may very well have been Roger who inspired Dick’s pronounce- ing on other projects. There was never any record of money changing hands for work done, except to pay for parts; for Dick and Roger, the “labor” cost was strictly the labor of love. It must be said that they each had their own, He was also known to don his driving cap and give the occasional ride to the Selcer family poodles... ment one night to the family that the word “Porsh” would be forever banished from the household, to be replaced thenceforth by “Por-sha.” Roger was thinly built and about 6 feet tall, while Dick was about 5’ 7” and had the stocky build of a wrestler, so seeing the two together sometimes invited comparisons to Mutt and Jeff or Laurel and Hardy. Whether they realized this or not is lost to history, but they certainly didn’t seem to care. Dick and Roger used the ample dimensions of the Selcer garage to work on club members’ cars, as well as tak- sometimes very different, ideas about how a certain project or repair should be handled, and it was not out of the question for the neighbors to hear bits and pieces of a heated argument emanating from the open garage, followed by the clang of a tool being dropped (or thrown) to the concrete floor, and a moment later, the rasp of Roger’s Porsche starting up and accelerating away down the street. Nevertheless, they would be back at work again an evening or so later, as if there had been no disagreement at all. In fact, Roger was known to show up at the Selcer November 11 door at 7:30 am on some Saturday mornings, itching to get his hands on the next Porsche project or repair. On November 26, 1972, the Selcer’s son, Rick, was driving from Fort Worth to return to classes at Austin College in Sherman, TX. On the way there he had car trouble and had to pull over by the side of the road. As luck would have it, friends of the Selcer family were driving in the other direction and noticed Rick’s car parked on the shoulder. They stopped to see if he needed assistance, and Rick asked that if they were headed home, could they contact his dad to see if he could help out. They did so, and without a second thought, Dick drove up to meet Rick and get the car running again. As Dick was working on the car, a passing vehicle veered off the road and struck him. An ambulance arrived quickly, but tragically, he died of his injuries on the way to the hospital. phy, and was given to Charlie Davis for 1976. We were pleased that Peggy, his widow, was available to present this award.” As we now know, the idea for and creation of the award came from Don Spaulding, former Maverick Region President and Zone 5 Representative, as well as - no surprise - from Roger Chaney. Don did the graphic design for the award, featuring a drawing of the 1600 N engine from the Grey Eagle’s Cabriolet. In 1976, two Maverick Region members collaborated in creating a meaningful remembrance of Dick Selcer’s spirit of generosity after his untimely passing. In the December 1976 issue of Slipstream, Leon Cowan, who was Maverick Region President at the time, wrote this about the new award: “At the Founder’s Day Banquet in November a special award was presented for the first time. The recipient will keep the trophy for one year, and it will be passed on in subsequent years. The award was made possible by an individual who wishes to remain unnamed. Each year the President of the club may select the recipient who, in his opinion, represents the singular outstanding performance and service to the Region. This award will be known as the Richard F. It was not conceived as just another plaque for the trophy case. By Mike Brodigan W hen I first joined PCA (a long time ago) I kept wondering what all the fuss was about. Why were so many people signing up for a driving school? Did every Porsche owner need the insurance discount, or did they all have speeding tickets they needed excused? not for them,” and that might be true. Let’s dispel a few myths about Drivers’ Education. Drivers’ Education, also know as a DE, is really a couple of things. First, and most importantly, it’s an event where you learn to drive your Porsche, (or any other car) well. It is an opportunity for you to explore the handling of your performance car, and learn the basics of high performance driving done safely. Second, for many of us it becomes a great hobby. Some of those among us feel “it’s just 14 1. Your car does not need any “upgrades.” In fact, it is better if you leave it stock. 2. DE’ s are about as hard on your car as a pleasant Sunday drive. 3. The only special gear you need is a helmet, and at some tracks they will rent you one. A fairly recent motorcycle helmet is fine. Borrow one! 4. DE’s are not dangerous. You learn at your own pace with a certified instructor. We have never had an injury as a result of a DE. Your day at a DE event is spent in three ways. First, you will have classroom sessions where some very experienced drivers will work with you on driving skills. Second, you will be on the racetrack for four sessions each day with an instructor by your side. Finally, you will spend time with other participants “bench racing” and generally having a great time. You will be amazed at how fast you improve. By the end of weekend, you will have learned a ton and may already be addicted to this thrilling hobby. It originated several years ago and is an alternative to Parade for folks who, for whatever reason, could not make the trek to Parade. It is so popular that many members actually attend both. When he finally emerged, he handed each of us our own official warning for our infraction and he cautioned us not to follow so closely and to drive safely. So other than the time lost, we all emerged with our driving records unscathed. Texas State Trooper. F riday, September 9th dawned clear and pleasant for our drive to Fredericksburg for this year’s Boxstoberfest. Eleven cars from the Maverick Region gathered at the Waffle House on US 67 in Alvarado to caravan under the leadership of John and BJ Harvey. After everyone ate what they wanted, we pulled out and headed southwest for our drive to the hill country. We passed through Cleburne and as we crossed the county line into Somervell County heading to Glen Rose, a state trooper had a new Chevy Camaro pulled over for an infraction. We passed by, well within the posted speed limit with the Harveys leading and the Froehlichs last in the sweep position, secure in the knowledge that we were not going to fall prey to the trooper on the side of the road. But just a mile down the road, there he was in my rear view mirror with his lights flashing. So I moved over to stop, but he went by me so I pulled back on the road and followed. He did this with each of the 11 cars in our caravan and when he got in front of the Harveys he pulled us all over. What was this for we all wondered, as Officer Acker talked with John at the front of the pack, then collected all our driver’s licenses and license plate information and let each of us know that we were all guilty of not displaying our front license plate. He sat in his car for half an hour checking us all out on his laptop while we all stood on the side of the road 18 Following this delay we proceeded through Glen Rose and on toward our destination. John had plotted a route that took us off the beaten path and somewhere we left US 67 onto a mix of state highways and county roads. hit the road for the relatively short drive left to Fredericksburg hoping to stay awake at the wheel after that prodigious lunch. We all arrived at our destination safely and most of us checked into the Hangar Hotel, the center for the weekend’s events. After unloading our bags, John had another adventure for us, a trip to Becker Winery where we tasted some of Dr. Becker’s best wines under the tutelage of Henri, who John and BJ refer to lovingly as the “crazy Frenchman.” Now we were all sleepy so we returned to the hotel where some napped while others of us felt the need to wash our cars for Officer Acker talked with John at the front of the pack, then collected all our driver’s licenses... I think we all saw parts of Texas we had never seen before. Eventually we made our way to Llano where we stopped at Cooper’s Old Time Pit Barbeque for lunch. If you have never been there, this is a Texas experience you need to have, unless you suffer from liver or kidney disease. You start by going by the pit and picking your The Salazars enjoy a Pork Chop at Cooper’s meat(s), then entering the restaurant where you get all the other goodies. Because we were all hungry when we got there, I think everyone ordered more than really wanted, but since we were on a road trip, we ate it all. It then took two hand washings before I dared touch my steering wheel again. We all waddled out of Cooper’s and the next morning’s display. So John, Don Sebert and I went to a local coin operated car wash I had found last year and spent a few quarters plus some tender loving care cleaning up our cars. After this we returned to the hotel and guess what, time for another meal! So those of us who had any room left to stuff in a few more calories headed downtown to the Altdorf Biergarten for a little German cooking. We had a wonderful meal of a variety of German delicacies and a little German brew then headed back to the hotel for a good night’s sleep. The next morning, around 8 o’clock, people started to line up their cars for the car show. Over 100 cars were there and they included almost every model of Porsche road car made since 1950. It was a mighty impressive collection of the marque, but true to the name of the event, Boxsters were in the majority. We wandered around talking to people about their cars and drooling over some of them for the next couple of hours as we mentally prepared ourselves for the upcoming drive. Around 10:30 we gathered for the driver’s meeting. A hundred cars can not drive in one long line, so we were divided into 4 different groups, 2 driving the loop clockwise and 2 in the opposite direction. The route was similar to last year’s, but because our group went the opposite direction we travelled last year, I can’t say if it was identical and it sure felt different. Another thing that was obvious was the devastating effect of the 2 year drought on the region. Almost nothing was green and there were almost no cattle. Near the end of the drive we saw a ranch with a small herd of longhorns, but the earth moving equipment was out trying to dig down to some groundwater without much luck and I wondered how long it would be until those steers went to market. We drove two of the three famous “Twisted Sisters,” 336 and 337, and stopped for lunch again at the Hog Pen in Leakey, where 336, Nothing like hundreds of Porsches... 337 and US 83 all come together. By this time, the coolness of the morning had disappeared, we were all well sunned and those of us with our tops down put them up for the afternoon portion of the drive. After lunch we continued on and after another 100 miles, some of us got lost and ended up on a shortcut back to Fredericksburg. We arrived back at the Hanger around 4 o’clock and convened in the Officer’s Club for libations and storytelling. That evening we all converged for the awards dinner in the big hall at the hotel with an island tropical theme. I had neglected to read about the theme for the evening in the email that arrived earlier that week so I didn’t have the requisite Hawaiian shirt nor was Susan dressed in a grass skirt. But looking at the crowd, we obviously weren’t the only ones who missed the dress info for the evening. In addition to awards and door prizes, we did hear a brief talk by Robert Turner, the author of a new mystery series whose main character is a race car driver, that was interesting eeny, me eny, mine y or moe ? and inspiring. As the evening’s festivities wound down, some of us headed to Hondos in downtown Fredericksburg for some live music and dancing. Good music, good beer and a place to dance to a live band, a great finish to a really fun day! Sunday morning, we didn’t go on the special “mystery” tour, but instead headed back to Big D. It was a great weekend and I know all who attended had a blast. So plan to be part of the Maverick contingent at next year’s Boxstoberfest the weekend after Labor Day. You won’t regret it! November 19 Cliff’s Ramblings By Cliff Blackshear I was thinking about my recent conversation with Bob Aines and the fact that he and multiple others were about to embark on a road trip to Laguna Seca and the Rennsport Reunion in California. Predominately early P cars (911’s) taking back roads all the way out. They are meeting up with others along the way and planning a great adventure getting to and from a great event. This set me to thinking about how roads developed in our country and how the generation before me enjoyed that period in time. My dad was totally in love with taking road trips. I remember as a kid, how we always loaded the car with provisions and headed out every year on an adventure. The roads were two lane (yes, I was born before interstate road systems were invented) and driving these roads required attention and skill. Passing a slower car on a two lane road could be a thing of beauty. Set up the pass before topping a hill and having 10-20 mph higher speed than the slower car just when you reached the crest of the hill. Slide slightly left and see what’s coming. Judge oncoming vehicle and make a move to pass or hit the binders and burn off speed and wait for next opportunity. HONEYMOON Road Trips Go further back into road trip history when the auto was just making its way into American lives and it really was an adventure. In 1938 my grandfather decided that the family needed to travel from Ft. Worth to New York and attend the 1938 World’s Fair in the trusty family car. Now, I know absolutely nothing about the cars of that time, but I believe they traveled in a Model T or it could have been a Model A. Not sure. He told me that at least once a day they would pull over and his dad would look around the side of the road and find two rocks. Next he would hold one on the bottom and take the other and beat the suspension back into good order. I wonder if it was a king and link set up that required this sort of attention. Tie rod ends? Ball joints in general? I don’t know. The roads were so rough that the suspension became too loose after a while. Flat tires were common and expected. The whole sequence of dealing with a flat was routine stuff. He told me about working in a stone factory that cut stone for various applications (buildings, bridges, headstones etc.). The saw that cut the stone was driven by a Model T engine and fueled by natural gas from a pipe coming out of the floor. It was his first job at 14 years old. The engine would be started up in the morning and run all day. If it started knocking, or acting up, they had to shut down the mill and look for the problem. The bearings failed quite often under the constant load and there was only time for a quick overhaul before they would light it up again followed by more maximum loads all day long. One interesting thing he told me about was delivering the stone in the Ford truck of the day to the buyer. The fuel delivery system to carburetor was so anemic that fuel starvation was not uncommon. Delivering stone to Dallas from Ft. Worth required going up “Chalk Hill.” It was so steep that there was a turn-around area at the bottom and the top of the hill. They would arrive at the bottom of the hill, turn around and back up the hill to keep the engine from dying from fuel starvation. So the solution was to keep the fuel tank higher than the carburetor. Reach the top, turn around and continue on the delivery. Believe it or not, this was routine. Cliff Swap Meet at Zims By Alan Bambina get there early and arrived at 7:50. Much to my surprise, there were half a dozen pick-ups and SUVs already set up or unloading. OK then, claim my spot and get ready. Making a swap for cash! I t has been said that “timing is everything.” The swap meet at Al Zim’s shop in Bedford was well prepared for and well presented. Unfortunately, the Good Guys Rod and Custom Show at Texas Motor Speedway was also well prepared for, with a slightly bigger advertising budget. This may have affected attendance. Nonetheless, the swap meet at Zims was a blast. I thought I’d Not surprisingly, Al Zim was there to open the shop and parts department. Not only did Al supply free donuts and coffee, but offered an additional 10% off anything you wanted to purchase from the parts counter. We owe Al a big “thank you” for his generosity and allowing us to squat in his driveway for the morning. Once there and set up, most of the “vendors” abandoned their own table or pick-up bed to check out what everyone else brought. The entire idea of a swap meet is to swap your stuff for someone else’s stuff. You name the model number, and there was something representing that car. 356, 911, 914, 928, 930, 944, 968 and all the rest had parts spread Photo by Travis Howard out on the parking lot to display. I think the most surprising item I saw was a rear section of a Targa body sans engine, trans, wheels, paint, hardware and everything else with a sign stating FREE. I thought the sheet metal shell would make a lovely backyard seat for some enterprising Porsche owner. I don’t know if anyone else took it home or it returned with the fellow what brung it, but it did attract a lot of attention. All in all, about 15 to 20 vendors showed up to sell/trade parts, and perhaps 100 people were there to meet and greet, check out car parts, cars or each other and spend a lovely Fall morning with friends. Personally, I sold more old 356 parts than I thought I would and bought a few items that, in all likelihood, will show up at a future swap meet at Zims. November 21 Advertiser of the Month: Invisibra N ot all clear bras are created equal, just as not all cars are created equal. Norm Schilling, owner of Invisibra, has the goal of making everyone aware of this fact. Paint protection film, also known as clear bra, is a clear urethane film designed to make rocks and other debris bounce off your vehicle instead of chipping your paint and has been available for a few decades. Norm’s entry into this industry 17 years ago preceded the software and computer designed kits that are so prevalent today. While having these computer-cut kits available as an option, he is better known for having perfected the “Art of Paint Protection” with custom installations. However, his art is as invisible as possible. “My biggest compliment is when a customer has to get within a few inches of their own car to figure out 22 where the film is,” says Norm. Without knowing how invisible paint protection film can actually be, many people have become accustomed to mediocre installations and film quality. The good news was; The Rangers won, the bad news is: road construction is going to continue for some time to come.
