Vice Presidents Carey and Mimi Spreen Prez Says: by James Shoffit, Maverick Region President Ah yes, the first article after Parade – finally it is easy to pick a topic to write about! There are several big stories of this year’s Parade. It was a very good year to be a Maverick in Milwaukee, that’s for sure. We did very well in every event, and brought home many trophies. The biggest shock would have to be that Wendy, Jasmine, and I won the Porsche Family of the Year award! I thought that was reserved for people who had been going to Parades for dozens of years, but it was wonderful to have our efforts recognized at a national level. It was a spectacular follow-up to Lanean’s Enthusiast of the Year award for 2000. The other big shock was to find out my tires were the wrong size for the Parade Driving Event (autocross). I had 45 series tires, and for P14 you cannot have lower than 50 series tires. So Wendy and I got disqualified from the autocross even though each of our three times bested our nearest competitor’s best time. Wendy even had one lap where she killed the car and restarted it, and still finished with a time that would have won P14L. (Yes, there were other drivers there – I think 9 men and 3 or 4 women). The trip up and back were pleasantly uneventful. No blowouts, no spins in the middle of the highway, no flats – we even spent the night where we planned and got decent amounts of sleep! Jasmine was an angel for the entire trip, and had so much fun with the Porsche People. Her favorite event was probably the kids’ autocross, organized by our own Lanean Hughes. Lanean set up a wonderful little course of pylons and tires and the Michelin Man waved the green flag to start the tiny entrants on their way. A great time was had by all – spectators and competitors alike. that the Boxster owners are indeed interested in organized events and socials, but might not be aware of the benefits that PCA has to offer. So a few of us are going to try to organize some Boxster events coming up very soon. Of course anyone would be able to attend, but the focus will be on getting some member and nonmember Boxster owners together to discuss and compete with their new toys. The board meeting will be on Thursday, August 9th, so mark it on your calendars. We are getting some new faces now that we moved the date to Thursday, which will be good for all of us. The Post-Parade Party will be August 11th at the Prairie House, and you don’t want to miss that. If you have never been to a Parade, but are even remotely interested, come find out what all the fuss is about. You just can’t imagine how much fun there is to be had with other Porsche people till you experience it firsthand. August 25th and 26th will be the Mineral Wells Family Reunion. We are trying to get all the people who used to be MineralRing regulars to come out and remember the good old days. As always, all members will be welcome at the events, but it would be really neat to see a bunch of faces out there that we haven’t seen in a while. I am really looking forward to this event! Having just gotten back, there isn’t enough time to do a quality job of summarizing the week full of events before the printing deadlines. Every month, I get a publication from PCA national that talks about a different topic. This past month dealt with Boxster owners, and how to get them more active in the club. This is a topic that is important to me, as this seems to be an underserved market for PCA. The proliferation of other Boxster clubs shows Ray Anderson with his new numbers at MotorSport Ranch. It’s 200 degrees outside and driving in this kind of heat without air conditioning (to make the car perform better) and with a hot helmet on, you’d think a person would have to be crazy. I certainly thought the idea was, and therefore, was considering going as a spectator only. But my husband and Wendy Shoffit talked me into participating instead. Well, now that it’s all over, I’m glad I did it! Yes, it was hot. In fact, it was extremely hot. However, I must say that the part that was hot was when I wasn’t driving. Once I got in the car and on the track, I forgot all about the heat and was totally concentrating on the task at hand. Even after my run was over, I didn’t begin to notice the heat until a good 15 or 20 minutes went by, as I was still absorbed in the afterglow of my run, talking about how I did, what I could have done better, and etc. In the end, nobody who was there could argue it wasn’t hot, but I guarantee very few, if any, would say that once they were out there on the track that they didn’t forget all about the heat and think only about how they were going to approach the next turn. All in all, it was a great day and I am glad I was talked into participating. I look forward to next one, no matter what temperature it is outside. Maverick Minutes by Andy Mears, Maverick Region Secretary First off, thanks to Teri Davis for taking the minutes for the first half of the meeting. James called the meeting to order at 7:01, well sorta to order. Control was eventually regained and the meeting progressed. First item up for discussion is the use of PCA message boards to be placed at the area Porsche dealerships. Club members have volunteered to update messages and restock the boards as necessary. The club currently owns one board and will be purchasing two additional boards. The boards will be placed at Park Place Porsche, The Porsche Store and Autobahn. The nominating committee is looking for anyone interested in getting involved in Maverick Region management at a board level. The club has 4 position that are decided by election of the membership as a whole. President, Vice President, Secretary, and Treasury. Please contact any of the current or past board members if you would like to throw your hat into the ring or would like to find out more about any of the board positions. The club will purchase one tent/canopy for use at the next DE event. Charlie Davis has volunteered to act as “Interim Equipment Chairman” and will begin the task of research and “anal-yzing” the club’s needs for both storage and transportation of equipment. If you are interested in helping please contact Charlie Davis (chuxter@airmail.net). PCA National will begin permitting 16 and 17 year old drivers to participate in PCA events. There will be additional forms that must be signed by both parents. If you have questions please contact James Shoffit for more details. Charlie Davis requested that the 914 Special Interest Group (SIG) event in October to be run concurrent with the MRPCA October “Run Whatcha Brung” autocross. The morning will operate the same as the annual event and the SIG group will autocross in the afternoon with 914 classes. Contact Charlie for more info. Maverick Region is planning a “Drivers Family Reunion” August 25 in Mineral Wells. Look for the ad on page 3. Also, Teri Davis reported on Round-Up in September and is taking reservations and for accommodations. There is a full weekend of activities including things to do for both the adults and children. Many “Porsche Club Wannabee's” such as myself and several friends showed up bright and early for yet another fun filled autocross event with the Maverick Region Porsche Club. Albeit we don't have our corral of Porsches, we were once again sincerely greeted and treated as welcomed friends - something rarely seen in specialized car clubs. Kevin Hardison Although I don't know what a 996 is from a 930 or a VW Bug from a 914, the large active participation of various Porsches gives you a good hearty confirmation that Porsches are true race ready cars with excellent balance and awesome braking abilities the perfect combination for testing your driver skill at these relatively low speed and very safe autocross events. The course was tight, but very straightforward - you had to keep your eyes looking ahead, else you would miss your braking zone, enter the turn too hot (or blind), and cook your front wheels with no turning traction. The old racers' adage, “Sometimes you need to go slow to go fast” proved true on that sunny Sunday. I was able to shave 2 seconds off my worst time by slowing done to almost a crawl to get through the tight turns - where previously my front tires would squeal and scream to let me know they were over their available traction limitations. (Instinctively I thought I was going too slow for the turns, but looking at the actual lap times proved that wrong) Excessive squeal = no acceleration = slow times and this proved quite true once again. Smooth and boring to watch = fast times. I decided to go for loud and aggressive - oh well, at least I had a blast. Okay, it was very hot. Yet track temperature aside, the Maverick Region Drivers Education (DE) event at Motorsport Ranch held on June 23-24 was a very fun event, with overwhelming participation from a lot of Maverick track junkies (or track junkies-to-be). Since MSR, as the Ranch is oftentimes referred to, is one of the closest racetracks to the Dallas/Ft. Worth metroplex, many Mavericks joined in on a weekend of turns, apexes, passing signals, and good old race track driving. There were also some friendly faces from Hill Country and Lone Star regions, both students and instructors. The primary objective of the Drivers Ed event is to present a safe environment to better learn how to take advantage of the superb German engineering within our cars. The day starts out with a driver’s meeting where flags and safety protocols are reviewed. Drivers go out for four 20-25 minute sessions per day, grouped into 5 different run groups based on driving experience. Instructors are required for the beginners and novices (green and blue), while the more advanced students are given the option to have an instructor ride shotgun. 12 a tight twisty track, definitely enjoying the rare opportunities where 16 pounds of boost pressure would catapult his Porsche quickly through any of the longer straightaways. I’ve driven many cars, but this one tops the list in terms of crazy acceleration when the turbo boost gets a chance to build up. My novice Blue Group student was a first-timer to Motorsport Ranch, but had several DE’s on other tracks under her belt. She was nervous initially, but soon looked very comfortable muscling the I-mean-business 911 RS America (no power steering) around the track at a very good speed. I was definitely proud of the improvement that these two drivers showed, and are two good examples on why I enjoy instructing so much. The Porsche Store, the event’s sponsor, also showed up in style, staying out of the sun with an impressive canopy. Represented by a collection of Boxsters, 944’s, and several 911’s (including John Gladwill’s 996-engined Boxster S), the Porsche Store showed its support for the event with several employees like John Hrad, Wayne Corley, and Rick Jordan driving alongside their customers. As an instructor, the day flew by, as I hopped from car to car, either as a passenger or as a driver, taking students for instructional rides. Both of my students did excellently. My Green group first-timer in a gorgeous white 930 slantnose learned to drive a car that delivers power all at once, through Mavericks now look forward to September, when the next DE is scheduled. Hopefully, cooler weather will prevail, but there is one thing that is sure to stay the same – it’ll be a weekend of fun, fast driving in one of the most challenging, technical racetracks in Texas. Shadow Canyon brought together the 40th anniversary celebration that was truly Texas style with lots of BBQ, beer, and all the wonderful people of the Zone 5 region. The event included an Autocross organized by Joe "Retread" McGlohen, which had a "shooting star" course layout that was a hoot. Later that day many Autocrossers enjoyed a longer course at Texas World Speedway for the famed Driver's Education sampler session. Not one to be left out of the anniversary excitement, the Concours committee put together an event that was held in the "Cold Pits" of the Texas World Speedway. The occasional rain sprinkles kept them scrambling to keep their cars in pristine form. Jim Valenti of Maverick Region scored 395 points with his P6 Class 1992 Carrera and he also won the overall concours award. There's was also a silent auction, which included a beautiful Marakesh Red BMW R1100RSA motorcycle, raised $11,678 for Magnificat House, a charity in Houston. Michael Jones Scott and Tricia Guenther Alan Lage and fiance Debbie. 15 TSD Rally Workshop By Carey Spreen Dateline Weatherford, Texas (MRPCA) -- This sleepy North Texas town west of Ft. Worth was brutally awakened on Saturday, June 16, when a marauding band of TSD (time-speed-distance) Rally School students, led by their instructor, held the Texas Pythian Home hostage for most of the afternoon. The small but vocal group commandeered one of the libraries at this Texas Historic Landmark and blockaded themselves in, discussing rally tactics and strategy, as well as traps and tricks that they might encounter in the Porsche Parade Rally, which was to be held less than three weeks later. Authorities later determined that the group was composed of members of the Maverick Region of the Porsche Club of America, but by that time they had abandoned their makeshift fortress and made away in their rally vehicles. two very valuable lessons: (1) everyone makes mistakes, even experienced rallyists; and (2) no matter how many rallies you have participated in, whether as competitor, worker, or Rallymeister, you always learn something new. But seriously, folks, it was a good time and, like I said, everybody learned something. Many thanks to Teri Davis and her lovely husband Charlie for putting on the school, and thanks to the workers and participants that made it a success. But this was just the beginning of Parker County's worst nightmare since the clock stopped in the Weatherford Town Hall. This reporter has learned that the leader of the entire incident, as well as the group's instructor, had designed a "simple" TSD rally for the students to cut their teeth on, and they did just that. The rally route travelled little-known roads south and east of Weatherford, cutting a swath of destruction all the way to tiny Aledo, TX, where the rebels finally surrendered. The details of this rampage have finally emerged. Teri Davis, Maverick Region's Rally Chairperson, set up the TSD Rally School for Parade Rally hopefuls, and anyone else interested in honing their rally skills. Four students were up to the task: rally neophytes Karen and Eric Erz, who were to attend the Parade in July; journeyman rallyist Carey Spreen, who had been rallying off-and-on with various PCA regions since 1980, and had put on his first one just last year; and grizzled rally veteran Joe McGlohen, who had been putting on rallies himself since--well, let's say his first sortie as a Rallymeister was well before there was any such thing as a water-cooled Porsche. Karen navigated for Eric in the Novice class, driving their recently-acquired TurboLook 911 Targa, while Joe navigated for Carey in the Experienced class, driving Joe's battle-hardened Stealth Suburban. The rally started off well, with both sets of contestants holding their own in each class, until they encountered the first Manned Route Control, at which point disaster struck. Due to an ill-fated misprint in the Special Instructions handed out at the MRC by James and Wendy Shoffit (for which they were later exonerated), both sets of contestants got off course, and for what seemed like lots and lots of minutes, wandered aimlessly though the wilds of southern Parker County. Last minute tips before we get started. Cary Spreen, Joe McGlohen, Karen Erz, Teri Davis, James Shoffit, and Eric Erz It was finally through sheer perseverance, and a bit of luck, that the teams of Spreen/McGlohen and Erz/Erz got back on course and made it to the Underwood Road timing control, exhausted but ready to continue. The second leg was a breeze by comparison, and ended without further incident at Aledo's leading burger bar for the awards ceremony. All contestants left with trophies that fateful day: very pretty (and useful) glass bowls with the PCA logo affixed to the bottom. All involved in the incident have been released on their own recognizance, after it was determined that they learned at least 16 Taking a burger break. Father’s Day Picnic By Mimi Spreen The 13th annual Father's Day Picnic at the lovely home of Dave and Doris Casey was jam packed with good food, good fun, great cars and of course, great people. As the RSVP's slowly came in, I wasn't sure we'd reach 50, but surprise, surprise, surprise, we had 73 actual RSVP's. Good thing the Casey's have the room to accommodate that many people, plus the 16 cars entered for the concours. Charlie Davis graciously volunteered to head up the concours and he divided the cars into 2 groups. The Blue Class and the Prestigious Orange Class. He had a very secretive and highly technical method for this, but he wouldn't divulge it. The results are as follows: The Blue Class 1st, with 12 votes, Richard Cross, Red 1964 356 Coupe Relaxing by the pool. 2nd, with 11 votes, Michelle DeJong, Tangerine 1974 911T Coupe 3rd, with 10 votes, Fred Pretzer, Red 1965 356 Cab The great water balloon toss. It was all I could do to not start it up and take it for a spin!! All the other cars were beautiful as well, but I have a huge soft spot for 928 GTSs, especially when it's a five speed. Thanx Chuck! Wendy Shoffit headed up the games for the little ones and some of the big ones too. We started with a water balloon toss which was great fun. Mike DeJong and his daughter Emily were partners and both did very well, until Mike threw the ball to Emily and she couldn't catch it. I was standing next to her and saw her bottom lip start to tremble, so I said, "that's ok" and she looked up at me with tears in her eyes and said "I couldn't reach it" I just wanted to hug her, but of course she ran to her Daddy in tears. Maybe next year Emily! The winners, for the second year in a row, were Joey and Jodi Berdis. I think someone else should pick out their balloon for next year! Hopefully the Casey's will be willing to host this event next year, but if not, maybe some of the other members with a pool and enough room to accommodate approximately 80 people, will step up and volunteer. Thanks Dave and Doris for a wonderful time. 17 18 Tires, Brakes, Wheels And Things That Go Bump In The Night At The Race Track… By Keith Olcha So an instructor, who shall remain nameless, spins out at Motorsport Ranch in the June Drivers Education event. He comes in to the black flag station and we chat. Later in the day he come up to me and says: "Good news. I know why I spun. My right rear tire had 51 pounds of air pressure in it!" Well that's just dandy. The tire is rated for a maximum of 44 pounds, and in a 911 of that particular weight, he should have had about 41 pounds hot in the rear tires after a run session. Another instructor, who also shall remain nameless, corded two Hoosier DOT racing tires by running them under-inflated for two run sessions. You’d think instructors would know better. Well, they did once, and then they got lazy. Fortunately nothing happened with either driver or their cars, but it never hurts to review safety items again. Let's remember three very important areas of safety: 1) Proper tire inflation, tread surface wear, and lug nut torque 2) Brake fluid level, cleanliness, and air-bleeding 3) Brake pad and rotor wear. Safety belts, seats, and airbags work after you get into trouble. The three items above, when properly maintained, keep you out of trouble. The four tires on your car, and the palm-sized contact patch they maintain with the ground is all that connects your car to the track. It's not a relationship to abuse. Let's start with item number one above- the tires. Tires are filled with air, and it's this air which maintains the tires structure and conformity to the road. The tread contact patch rubber creates friction against the road surface that allows acceleration, braking, and turning to occur. Air pressure varies greatly with outside temperature and heat generated from the friction. You should check your tire pressure at least twice per day, once first thing in the morning, and again after lunch. Street tires generally should have 2-3 pounds more than the factory pressure when cold before a run session under the theory that they need to be stiff to avoid rolling over on their edges, and that they will increase 4-6 PSI during a 25 minute run session. However, if the rear factory recommendation plus 2-3 pounds would exceed the maximum inflation (found by reading the tire sidewall) don't add air to the rear tires. Also, most manufacturers recommend high under steer-inducing pressure differentials between front and rear tires. A good example is my Boxster. The factory pressure is 29 Front, and 36 rear. On the track, that would have the rear about 42 pounds in hot weather after a 25-30 minute run session. I, along with others, have found that with street tires starting at front 32 pounds (3 lbs over as mentioned above) and rears at about 34 PSI works very well with minimal sidewall rollover and decreases under steer. With DOT track-tires such as Kumhos, Hoosiers, and Yokohamas, those manufacturers have specific pressure recommendations that can be found on their websites, or The Tire Rack's website. For example on a 911- a Kumho V700 Victoracer should be 1 pound for every 100 lbs in the front and 2 pounds more in the rear. So if your 911 is 3000 pounds, a cold inflation starting recommendation is 30 pounds in each front tire and 32 pounds in the rear. Kumhos like a hot maximum pressure of 36-39 pounds. So depending upon your driving style, the track, and outside temperature in that same 911 above, you might start 28 F 30 R or 32 F 34 R for the desired outcome—but not 51 pounds! Lug nuts should be torqued to 90 lb-ft. There's no need to discuss why tires need to stay on the car, is there? And what about the second item, brake fluid? Brake fluid is the hydraulic fluid that converts foot pedal pressure through vacuum assist (in most all newer street cars) into caliper and drum pad pressure so the rotors/drums slow down. Where does all that momentum or movement of the wheel turning go? It turns into heat and goes into the air, the rotor, the tire, wheels, and the brake calipers. After several minutes of heat, it is easy to boil the accumulated moisture (water boils 212 degrees) that has been absorbed by the brake fluid in the caliper. Once that happens the resulting boiled water yields air bubbles, which creates space and thus the dreaded "soft, ineffective" brake pedal. The only solution is to brake less and let the brakes cool down and "bleed" off the air-bubbled fluid in the calipers. How do you keep your brake fluid fresh so that doesn't happen? Bleed the brakes twice per year with fresh fluid and keep your master-cylinder topped up with fresh fluid. What about brake pads and rotors? You can use up an entire set of pads in one weekend DE at a track. Always start with more than _ pad material remaining. Change your rotors every 2-3 sets of pads, or better yet—measure them for acceptable remaining thickness. Porsche has very clear specs for that. On some rotors, it's stamped right on the rotor. Keith Olcha and his RS America. So check your car over after every run session, for tire cuts and abrasions. Brake fluid and pad wear twice per day, and inflation pressures twice or three times per day. And have fun. There’s only one way to begin – show up. You can choose to come to scheduled fun events or you can dive right in to the board meetings. These meetings are held monthly, with dinner and drinks provided. Dates and location are listed in Slipstream and on our webpage (www.pca.org/mav). Board meetings are always open to all members – just show up and join in the discussion. You will be welcome. One of the most important things to do when wanting to help in any organization is to first WATCH and LISTEN. See what people are doing. Hear why they are taking that particular approach. If you see something you would like to help with, offer to help them in a way they would like you to. THEN you can make educated, helpful suggestions if a change is needed. Communication is the key. If you are someone who has come out to an event, helped do some of the “grunt” work, and THEN made suggestions, your opinions will be significantly more credible and your suggestions will be taken more seriously. Educate yourself about the process before you look to revamp it. There is usually (but not always) a perfectly logical reason why something is being done the way it is. If you offer your help and the organizer politely says, “Well, there’s really not much you can do right now. Everything is taken care of,” don’t despair. You have probably come into the process a bit late and everything has already been delegated. It’s nothing personal. At that point, offer your help for the NEXT event and make sure early on that the event chairman knows you are available. Please don’t assume that since you said, “Sure, I’ll help” four weeks/months/years ago that he or she will remember to call on you. Make your presence known and re-affirm your commitment to volunteer your time, services, or other resources. If you don’t know whom to contact to volunteer, just call one of the board members listed on page 4 of every Slipstream. If he/she doesn’t know, you will eventually be directed to someone who does know. As a final resort, you can volunteer to the current President (James Shoffit). He is the one who makes appointments to particular committees. Be consistent and be visible. Let us know your talents and we will hopefully put them to work! Finally, when the time comes (and it may be immediate) for you to help out, please be there. If you say you will do something, do it. Be someone who can be counted on and you will be treasured. MRPCA is run solely on volunteers. Not a single person is paid for their time or energy. Without people like you to become one of the “doers” by giving of yourself, we would be nowhere.
