Please enjoy the following article about National Quilt Day:
The National Quilting Association has designed this free pattern for your group or
guild as you celebrate National Quilting Day, March 20, 2010. Let’s not forget the tradition to use up what we have on hand. So with this in mind, gather up your scraps, grab
all those funky yellows, bits of brown and pieces of anything. Use what you have, even
if it means making a purple tree with yellow bows! Be creative!
Here are ways to give your quilt:
* VA hospitals — they would make great lap quilts.
* If a military base is nearby, contact the social services there to see where to give the
quilts.
* The quilt would be a great gift to the family of a soldier serving overseas. A child
might like one on the bedroom wall while waiting for Mommy or Daddy to come
home.
* Contact local churches to see who in the congregation might be serving in the war
zone and give a quilt to the family through the church. Or give it to the church to hang in
their parish hall to remind everyone they have a member serving overseas.

March 16, 2010 Meeting – Sherri Lynn Wood:
Passage Quilting Through Life‛s Transitions
With a Master of Fine Arts in sculpture from Bard College, and a Masters of Theological
Studies from Emory University, Sherri Lynn Wood is an artist, activist, and healer, based
in San Francisco, CA, newly relocated from Durham, NC. She combines her knowledge of
craft, sculpture, theology, and systems-centered therapy www.systemscentered.com/ApplyingSCT.aspx to reacquaint people with personal agency, community, love and the basic
skills of living. Sherri has been making quilts since 1988. Her quilts and textiles have been
exhibited at the North Carolina Museum of Art, The Southeastern Center for Contemporary

April 20, 2010 Meeting – JoEllen Collins:
A Life in Stitches
JoEllen Collins is a native of California, the only daughter of a radio announcer who also directed the San Francisco USO during World War II. Maintaining a lifelong interest in performing, she has been a radio newsperson, a
professional media spokesperson, made numerous appearances on television,
and performed in several theater productions.
Ms. Collins also showed an early interest in sewing and fabric art. After her
oil paintings and loom burned along with everything else in her Malibu home,
she embarked upon recreating family memories through appliqué. At the time
she joked that it was an art she could take anywhere...even while fleeing from
a fire. At first Ms. Collins made pieces only for private concerns such as wedding, birthday and baby gifts and began a series of squares depicting scenes
from her family and personal life to eventually be part of memory quilts for her
two daughters. After being approached to make similar squares for others, she
developed her business, called In Stitches.

So Many Chickens, So Little Time:
Diary of a Serial Quilter
Laura Wasilowski is a textile artist, author, teacher, and creator of hand dyed fabrics and threads.
She has an undergraduate degree in Costuming from the College of St. Benedict, St. Joseph, MN
and a Master of Art degree in Fiber from Northern Illinois University, DeKalb, IL. She is owner
of ARTFABRIK.
Explore the artist’s quirky mind with this lecture about quilt making in a series. Enjoy the revelation that one chicken quilt will surely lead to a second, third or fortieth. And discover what drives
a person to create multiple quilts about a blue chair, garden implements, or unsung kitchen appliances. All is revealed in this exposé, the Diary of a Serial Quilter. After the lecture, which includes
dramatic renditions from Songs of the Fuser, Laura will display her small quilts (“mini-series
quilts”) and offer a trunk show of hand dyed fabric and threads from the ARTFABRIK dyers.

Gather with us as we share ideas and information about our guild and demonstrate a few tips about quilting. We’ll
engage you in some fun activities and have a raffle. We do this only every other year, so please stop by and visit to
get or share ideas, make creative sparks, and network with others. Welcome to all, new and not-so-new. No sewing
machine or supplies needed. Lunch will be provided. Please RSVP. No fee.
Sunday, May 23: “Garden of Eden” with Laura Wasilowski (our May speaker) 10 AM – 4 PM
Create a small art quilt filled with every flower in creation and/or your imagination. Build a blooming garden base
of lush leaves, curly ferns. Add some simple and colorful floral combinations – all from fused fabrics. Directions
for free cutting flowers, bias leaves and fused quilt assembly processes are covered. No sewing machine needed.
All levels. Fee: $50 (this includes the $20 kit fee)
Sunday, June 20: “Suns and Moons” with Jane Sassaman (our June speaker) 10 AM – 4 PM
This machine appliqué workshop is based on the circle motif. Using Jane’s appliqué techniques and experimenting with decorative stitches, we will begin by making a series of colorful fabric discs which will then be arranged
into a dramatic and contemporary composition. Sewing machine needed. Beginners to advanced. Fee: $50

Our January Sewcial, Fantastic Fans with Tish Chung, was fun and we all made fantastic progress. Try to have
your quilt top finished by the June general meeting so that we have a group showing at that meeting.
Guild Library News and Magazine Giveaway

From the beginning of our Guild the library has been an important resource. The library budget enables us to subscribe to several magazines, buy new books and AV materials and fund special projects such as the newly redesigned
book case and the addition of a display rack that has increased circulation.
The library is maintained according to professional library standards as regards collection development (ordering of
new titles) cataloguing and weeding of the collection. Discards are offered to public and special libraries or sold at our
annual book sale. We recently offered selected issues of magazines and copies of our Guild Newsletter to the International Quilt Study Center at the Univ. of Nebraska which has the only funded quilt history chair in an American college.
Our Guild is very fortunate to have had Alex Zaremska as our librarian because in her career as a special librarian (now
retired) she had a particular interest and ability in the fine art of cataloguing. As a result, she has adapted the Library of
Congress tables to create a unique classification scheme that incorporates the many variables within the broad subject
of quilting to be found in our large collection. The items are retrievable by computer on the new dedicated laptop which
is brought to all meetings. In addition, a printed list of titles will be updated soon. Because Alex is moving out of state,
changes are afoot in the library. Dani Lawler is learning the intricacies of cataloguing and will maintain the computer
records. Cher delaMere will continue as Librarian in all her current duties. Much effort is required to provide a library
so we need help. Beverly Mayfield Sunshine has been assisting at the library table during meetings checking out materials, but we would like an additional member to alternate with her. Also, we need members to help fill out cataloguing
data input sheet on new books (this also includes a large number of gift books).. Please contact Cher if you can help.
Magazines: The guild currently subscribes to these magazines: American Quilter, Quilters Newsletter, Quilting Arts,
Quiltmaker and Threads. We have indices to many past years of certain titles. Also, the websites of individual titles
provide indexing.
Audiovisual materials: We have a growing collection of videos and DVDs.
You must be a member of the Guild to take out items. Books, magazines and audiovisual materials are checked out for
2 months. (exception - brand new book titles for one month only) There is a 4 item limit. A friendly phone call is made
to members before meetings to remind about overdue materials. Overdue fines are charged: $1 per title per overdue
month. You may place a reservation on any title that is checked out. We welcome all suggestions for new items. Please
enjoy this wonderful resource.

NEW BOOKS IN THE LIBRARY
The library committee members have been working hard to catalogue new titles for the collection. In addition to new
books, CD’s & DVDs bought with the library budget we also have received 3 large gift donations from Margaret Van
Pelt, Harold Nagel and Lynn Piercy and Margaret Wyatt. All the gifts are designated by a label on the front inside cover.
I intend to look over all new titles and provide a brief description of each, so here follows the first sampling; others will
appear in upcoming issues of Quilters Cables. If any of these titles are currently checked out or is still being processed
just ask anyone at the library table to place a hold on it.
Roberts, Elise Schebler et al. The Quilt: A History and Celebration of an American Art Form: A well researched and
beautifully illustrated history of quilts from its origins in Asia and the Middle East. It explores quilts in their social,
political and artistic contexts with many poignant personal stories.
Piecing the Piece O’Cake Way. At the library we are often asked for a beginning book on quilting techniques. From
its opening suggestions to start with a small quilt (you’re more likely to finish it) to keeping both a written and photographic journal this title fills that need.
Hazelwood, Ann Watkins. 100 Tips from Award-Winning Quilters. Chock full of suggestions both general and specific. Deserves to be read all the way through because of the variety of ideas.
Needham, Cindy. Wholecloth Linen Quilts. This author’s specialty is transforming vintage household linens such as
bedsheets, tablecloths, pillowcases, table scarfs and doilies into quilted treasures. Suggested tools are helpful to both

Michlerl, J. Marsha. Crazy Quilting. The Complete Guide. Emphasis here is on complete. Beyond the traditional elements this includes phototransfer and machine embellishment.
Alexander, Karla. Baby Wraps, Quick, Cuddly Quilts. Both piecework and applique patterns are included.
Merrill, Ra Nae. Simply Amazing Spiral Quilts. This Australian quilter injects her bright palette of color into her
method of drafting foundation-pieced spirals that are a challenge to both the patchwork and art quilter. CD included.
Pasquini Masopust, Katie. Design Explorations for the Creative Quilter. This quilter who has progressed from the
traditional to abstract quilts based on her own paintings offers several exercises to get your creative juices flowing.
Museum of the American Quilters Society; The Founders Collection. A catalogue of quilts purchased for the startup
collection and the subsequent additions which include winners of the American Quilters Society Show in Paducah.
Mashuta, Mary. Foolproof Machine Quilting. Mary specializes in machine quilting using the walking foot. Useful tips
regarding thread weight, equipment, products and templates are included.
Martin, Judy. Judy Martin’s Log Cabin Book. Seemingly endless and quite clever variations on this beloved pattern.
Hawley, M’Liss Rae. M’Liss Rae Hawley’s Scrappy Quilts; Let the Fabric Tell Your Story. This book by this popular
author places emphasis on using a multitude of patterned fabrics and shows them in a variety of color schemes.
Wheeler, Beth and Lori Marquette. Altered Photo Artistry, Turn Everyday Images Into Works of Art on Fabric. Stepby-step through the computer programs and printers that allow you to do phototransfer on fabric.
Hearder, Valerie. Points of View, Landscape Quilts to Stitch and Embellish. Here’s a starting point for jumping into
art quilts with a landscape motif.

QuiltAway 2010
I am off to QuiltAway – my first – and the Guilds 11th. Not knowing what to expect, I am
all packed and ready to be picked up.
Had I gone to Denmark to celebrate I would have had a small carry-on bag. Here I am with
four huge bags and a weekend suitcase. Sewing machine and the usual sewing accessories,
the special gadgets for my class, iron, lamp, extension cord etc. and a shopping bag of snacks.
I checked “Yes” I will bring snacks. For me, or all 75 participants? I don’t snack but I hope Chairs: Debbie Deal, Nancy
Clock, and Sue Deal
someone else will!
Arriving at the Mercy Center – what a beautiful location. The QuiltAway crew all in place to sign us in, and direct.
And directions are needed. The house is a maze of hallways and stairwells – half and whole floors. I always use the
stairs but here I gave in to the elevator not to get lost.
Dinner was really nice as was all the meals served and we were brilliantly mixed at the tables according to nametag background, - ribbon, -block design and – embellishment. Very well planned!
First evening premie quilts were produced in every classroom. Next evening Mystery quilts went
through the machines as bullet trains. Saturday evening 40+ baskets were raffled, all different, interesting
and fun. I guess I did not buy enough tickets since I did not win, but lots of happy winners amongst us.
Most importantly – CLASS.

I was not really keen on a 2-day class, but Dale Fleming’s Circles was what I wanted
to learn. And I could have stayed 2 more days. Super teacher, clear in her explanations,
detailed in showing how to and patient as a midwife in her individual supervision of
everyone. If the other classes were as great, and that was my impression, it was a very
successful “school.” I did not expect to leave with a finished quilt. My goal was to
learn. But some went home with more than one finished quilt top. I guess they sewed
all night.
In addition to sewing, it has been a fantastic experience to meet and talk to so many

guild members, who’s faces are familiar but now also have names. I am bad with names
so I can’t promise to remember, your name that is. The visiting part I really miss at guild meetings.
Sunday’s show and tell and exchange of Quiltlets was a nice conclusion to what has been a great experience, well
worth repeating.
